Lol level your guys up in an easier area. Where you are at is to difficult for you.
The game will totally kick your ass if you go where you shouldn't. One of the good things about it. :p
Don't think of yourself as being confined to some linear story with a linear path. Every area is different with different monsters at different difficulties.
Also make sure your setting up your contingency plans on your characters.
Setting them to use spells and potions and what not.

Are you using your leveling points? If I recall correctly that game gives you points to put into abilities and to strengthen your character but you actually have to apply them or their just points.
make sure your gear is set up well also, weapon, armor etc.
don't hesitate to use the pause game method of playing when your selecting tactics.
It will make it much easier for you. there's an option for that in the game.

Absolutely..lol. start with the obvious, make it easier if it's to hard :).
The only reason we play games is to enjoy them, I'll turn a game on easy if I have to, just to enjoy it.

and wtf is up with this combat tactics shit.. i can't seem to get one setup that works to save my ass...

You may want to do what I do.
I suck at most games becuase I don't play enough.

RPG's are great for me. I just design a character that I know will fit my playing style (with a name like "BloodGusher") and have a blast dying pathetically.

Okay, maybe I'm a bit touched. :D

Everything in every single game has a strategy to beat it easily. sometimes depends also on the player, whether you are suicidal, defensive, etc. you just try all sort of combinations and strategies and use always the one that fits you best.

EDIT:

u can either do it urself or set the strategies. but the usual setup of a tank, healer, ranged, and dps can all be incorporated with the tactics thing

depends on your class i had an extremely difficult time in redcliff as well heres what i suggest... have your teammates set to not fo ANYTHING bring morrigan along make sure she knows an AOE spell specifically the ice storm or blizzard or w/e thats #1 thing to get use her to lure and cast the spell let ur enemies get weakened then atk use manual targeting to stay OUT of the aoe range...

basically lure aoe wait wait cast more spells wait wait then atk. if its enemies that spawn like say the waves in town cast the aoe spell OUTside the area of your allies thus enemies are weakened and slowed down if i remember the milita are all bowmen so slowing enemies with ice aoe = win basically mage = pwn and if you do things right morrigan can do damage leliana can pick them off just use Allister as well a tank if he dies no big deal (im a warrior 2 hand user ;) so i get 2hand swing later = awesome) anyway the whole point is in key situation you need use manual spell / atks etc the auto feature is garbage 99% of the time. Dragon age is a turn based RPG plain and simple on higher difficulties if your a mage tag team with morrigan dbl AOE dbl blizzard is epic

Not at all. I have a blast !! The time I have to play computer games is about 4 hours every 3 months.

I'm going to make the best of it. I don't care how I do, I want to be entertained.
I had a Monk on EverQuest named Lunaway (run away)

Other than what was already said may I add something without sounding like a jackass? As im sure you already know.

RPG's are like every other genre VERY diffirent from each other. Like I enjoy FPS but FPS are mindless. you go in. you grab a gun. you get ammo you shoot stuff. In RPG's its all about skill..literally. Their are some games were leveling IS NOT enough. you need to mix members correctly. mage tank ranger etc. Even then you may need to fall back on heal magic and potions. Some magic is absolutely devistating. Like neverwinter nights. Even though its auto I brushed up on the DnD rules. It helps me understand. Even then powerfull magic could not be beaten IE if someone casted POWER WORD: kill. Im dead theirs nothing I could do their is no willsave. I just collapse to the ground dead. You need to juggle alot of the better RPG's which is to be expected they reaise the bar. Get an idea how the engine works. Learn the rules of that universe. Take in your area. Lots of worms or something (worms in alot of RPG's have poison abilities) That said poisoning isnt that effective it either does next to no damage or their immune. Use fire. Alot of RPG's play with the element system. Learn your characters. You may have built him to be a tank. But that doesnt mean he is. Give me a good mage and I will devistate any tank you can conjure. Because your simply outclassed. So balence. Get a mage in your party. teach him powerfull offensive and defensive. But dont forget to teach him party defensive magic. Use him to buff other characters. Even this falls eventually though. In an area with nothing but defensive mages defensive spells probably wont do you good. So set up your spells ahead of time do as much damage a possible and include some despel magic to take don their barriers. Its like a fine tuned car. Everything has a ryme and reason. Take it all in.

agree in a 80%. in every single rpg you need skill, thats a fact. but in some you need less and need something called LUCK (items in diablo, good roll on D&D based rpg). And yes, no respectable rpg in which you play with party members will let you play easily in a bad planned party. There is one RPG map for warcraft III called tomb of jarahcon. You need to have a perfectly balanced party to just finish it. You put one member that doesnt work well with the others and eventually you will be FU#$% up.

yup roger that I just kind of skipped over luck. But your absolutely right. Luck even ties in with just about everything AI changes in good RPG's all the time. If you die the next time you walk in they might not cast the same spell as they did the first time. IMO a good RPG has areas you need to do a few times to get a feel of the best strategy.

One sentence, patch the game. It's like nightmare difficulty as 1.00.

If you have patched the game then hit space all the time! :) Tactics don't really work, it's much better to babysit every player individually.

Soon 60h into it and still no end in sight :(

Although the game is open and you can do whatever you want whenever you want, there is a degree of varying difficulty in different places.

After you got Morrigan in your team you head to Lothering, you can get two party members here, Sten and Leliana. From then on you can do the side quests in this area (once you done one of the main quests Lothering gets over ran and you can no longer go there again).

Once you have done everything that Lothering has to offer, you can then move on to a different area, personally I think that "Broken Circle" is the best place to start as this quest will allow you to gain ability points that are acquired without levelling. Note a key factor in Dragon Age is that the AI levels with you.

Another key point is, as people have already stated, the combat system. I personally like:
Alistar = Tank, set his combat tactics to be the defender in close quarters
Morrigan = Healer, again combat tactics to healer and ranged
Leliana = ranged archer. Combat tactics to allow this.

During that battle at Redcliff, there are in fact little side quests you can do before hand that makes the invasion a lot easier for you. Talking to the armourer gets the men better armour so they will last longer in the fight. Talking to the pub landlord gets the moral up as he gives free beer. These all help raise your chances of winning.

During the fights, it is key to have potions in the quick bar at the bottom, click and drag them in. The bar itself can be extended to fill the entire width of the screen as well so make use of the available slots. During the battle you can just hit pause, click on each character and have them take potions whenever they need to, can give orders to take down the weakest first etc etc

Really the game gets easier to play as you go along, but harder to win. For example leave Denerim until last or else you're just going to get hammered every time you round a corner.

First time I played this game as an Elf with dual swords and maxed out dexterity I kept getting slaughtered by Mages. I got fed up and used a level-up cheat only to regret it because the AI as someone already pointed out levels up too.

Second time round decided to try going for two-handed weapon and maximum strength, oh and no cheats. This time round I slaughter the mages and game feels much better balanced.

Maybe different types of player combat speciality are easier than others?

Not really, u can roll anything and be good. might be harder in the beginning but once you get a decent party u can have them fill any role.

First place you should go is the Circle Tower. Get Wynne and set her up as a healer. Make sure to setup all your party tactics. Press the \ key and fill up all the slots. If all else fails pause at each battle and manually cast each spell.

litterally, i can't get through one fight without my entire team dying.. i'm just after the assault on redcliffe and i'm in the castle, and i can't win shit... i just die after the second wave of monsters.. is there anywhere i can get info on combat tactics and stuff.. i really don't see how this is enjoyable.. i'm feel like i'm enduring the game more than enjoying it??

The game wasn't great for me. There are builds that work and builds that don't work. It's like you have to make a bunch of mistakes and take notes of what everyone can do. Then you make an educated guess on what combination of characters work best.

I suggest you find magic and a tank ASAP. Casters are like life batteries. They are the best as healers/support. Sword and board taunters + healers = infinite agro control. Battles may take a while but you don't die as long as the casters mitigate mana. This is just a suggestion that worked well for me.

For all fighters and all characters that have any combat ability it would be best to program them to react to situations based on by what they're being attacked. If anyone of the enemies are ranged you should designate people to either deal with them or disable them. That's an example of a use of tactics that you will see effective. Mostly I have "attack if ranged" or "attack/taunt enemy if healer is being attacked" otherwise everything is "attack/combat ability closest enemy" without regard for stamina.

Honestly if you have a good support healer or system of combat then the fight should be controlled well enough that energy management isn't an issue. I rarely ever run out of stamina and mana between all of the party before the battle is over, and if you are then the battle isn't being handled correctly.

A final bit of help. Thief class is a must to have in the party. They are constant sources of energy-less damage. They just regular attack and hit as hard as the most powerful spells. It's ridiculous. They find and disable traps, and they aren't complete twigs because they have good armor.... rant over.
