Official AMD Radeon 6000 Series Discussion Thread

I think people underestimate AMD's CEO Dirk Meyer. This guy is a smart guy, you can thank him for Bulldozer and for ATI's Evergreen success.

People need to realize ATI was originally going to release a complete new design built from the ground up (Northern Islands) but the 32nm process went belly up and so they had to impliment a back-up plan ASAP and that is where Southern Islands came alive. HD 6000 series is no re-fresh of Evergreen, absolutely no way IMO, we are talking about something that is going to kick butt on a revised 40nm process. ;)

Who says that ? source ?

You must have missed the IMO. ATI added a dump load of Northern Islands Technology into the HD 6000 series. That is IMO not a re-fresh but rather a Hybrid Re-Fresh/NextGen.;)

According to reports, the new Southern Islands GPUs will be made using today’s 40nm process technology, will feature current-generation 5-way VLIW stream processors, but will also contain the Next-Generation ultra-threading engine, memory controllers, caches and other parts.

those information are a little old and coincides with fermi release, maybe it's just a marketing approach from ATI ???

was planning to get a 5770 because my 4870 is too friggin hot on just 50% load for some reason, and it consumes a lot of power.

but now, looks like ill be getting a 6770 vapor-x!

Just goolge these suckers, they ar everywhere.

lol i hear the mailman on this one

Don't forget that the 5970 is a dual GPU card, and that nVidia didn't yet release their anticipated dual GPU card based on GF104 (expected to be GTX490/495). Furthermore, nVidia are kings of the hill in single GPU performance with their GTX480 (at least until AMD/ATI's Southern Islands GPUs are released). I say the upcoming months will be very interesting in the GPU market.

Yeah i know they haven't released their Dual GPU card. They still haven't even released the GTX 485. :shadedshu I really wanted to go Green, but they are taking too much time. :( And i agree, the upcoming months will be very interesting in the GPU market. :D

It's a good time to be alive. If you're a hardcore techie trying to keep up with the new advancements in technology, and you actually understand what's going on, then it's really a good time.

It's only 1 or 2 months away before we have at least some definitive information, or real benchmarks from reputable sources. I can't wait personally.

I've got a decent system. I have been dropping around $500 a month for the last couple of months trying to catch up specifically readying myself for the new ATI cards.

I am using a Radeon 4870, and I want a 5870, but it's just too close. I'd rather wait a month or two and grab a 6xxx series. By then I'll have my system build with some of the best AMD hardware, and I'll be ready for a beastly video card.

...the upcoming months will not be interesting, there will be a clear winner : ATI...

I must have missed you going into the future and coming back. nobody knows how it will pan out, you have your opinion and thats fine but it hasnt happened yet so its not a fact.

unless of course he has gone to the future. Maybe he just can't directly mention it as it will cause a universe collapsing paradox... Please don't mention it if that is indeed the case.

nah man, nvidia follow this forum like hawks, now that they know that ATi will be the clear winner they know what they were going to do will not work and they can do something else.... right?

Well with a 1250 watt power supply on a 40watt load... That's 1.21 jiggawatts!
OK so then we use the 5870 core to fashion a flux capacitor with the negative gravometric disturbances in electromagnetic field lines created by the extraplanar.....

OK I have no idea what the hell I'm talking about.

I know I want a 6870 regardless of if nVidia has a counter.

JIGAWHAT!?

So far from unofficial sources it does seem like its less likely to be a refresh of the 5xxx series, I'll prepare to expect the most and make sure to sell my 5xxx cards before these bad boys come out!

Hurry ATI, my wallet requires punishment. :toast:

Surely the cards wouldn't even be compatible with GPU-Z ....

Screenshot of the video card, claiming the title of Radeon HD 6870

Probability is high that the screenshots are fake, but they give us some food for thought in the remaining time until November.

As you already know, in November, AMD will present a series of video cards Cayman, which would replace the Radeon HD 5850 and Radeon HD 5870. Mention of these products have already appeared in the drivers, so no doubt the inevitability of the announcement is not necessary.

On the pages of Chinese forum PCinLife appeared branch, which is under discussion credibility captures the characteristics and test scores in 3DMark Vantage, of a videocard wishing to become a successor Radeon HD 5870. Judging by the GPU identification number (6718), we have a screenshot with the characteristics of graphic solutions Cayman XT.

Compared to the Radeon HD 5870, the frequency increased from 850/4800 MHz to 850/6400 MHz, or we can talk about serious overclocking memory. As shown on the screenshot it has 256-bit interface. The result of 3DMark Vantage is X11963 scores, suggesting that a substantial increase in performance over the Radeon HD 5870 has been achieved by increasing the number of stream processors - say, from 1600 to 1920, While this is only an assumption, other architectural changes, we know little.

Blah blah blah burk.
This was my opinion. to compete with ATI nvidia will need to release a dual gpu based on the GF100, you think nvidia can release a dual gpu based on GF100 that will need very special components, a beast of a cooler, a whopping 375W TDP and finally costs 900 or 1000 usd ?? it has already been canceled from nvidia if you are up to date guys.
second thing and based on news and reviews, that dual gpu will be based on GF104, we already know the performance of that chip, again if you are up to date (if not start > all programs > windows update ) and should compete with the actual 5970.
nvidia have lose a big gpu market share Due to delays in making fermi, ATI sold over 11 millions gpu in that time and with the HD6000 they will make the difference bigger. in one word : nvidia should return to the labs and make something better. Forget about Fermi.
