What happened?

Ok to start off i got my PSU today, so to make sure I could actually put one in I took out my old one, and put it back in the exact same way, just for some experience.

I go to power up the system and no boot. it starts to power up the first time i try to boot, then it won't do it again. WHAT DID I DO WRONG? The only other thing that I messed with before I took out my PSU was that I took out the fans, and blew the dust out and put them back where they were. I made sure I plugged everything back up where it was supposed to go.

Can somebody please help me out on this issue, I want to make sure I am doing everything right, because I don't want that to happen to my new PSU.

I would be please if anybody could give me some suggestions on this issue :(

did you plug in the 4 pin cpu connector? and everything is snug?

what brand of PSU did you get....ratings and all.....

maybe the connectors arent making solid connections.....

did you replace to old psu b/c it had problems, or were you just updating your system..

please post info on the model of both the old and new psu for us...

The PSU I took out to test was my default PSU I think it is a 300 Watt max Bestec. But i ordered a Rosewill p550 watt, and recieved it yesturday. But to make sure i knew what i was doing (have never put in one) i just tryed taking the bestec out, and putting it back in just like it was. when i went to boot up, nothing. I don't know what i did wrong.. maybe something isn't snugg or in the right spot, but i am pretty damn sure i put everything where it was supposed to go, and pushed as hard as i could (not hurting anything, at least that i can think of).

Is that all you need to know? If anybody needs anymore information to help me out, please just ask me, i will be glad to answer you considering that i would really like to get this machine running as soon as possible.

only thing i can suggest at this point is to try the old psu again and make sure that it still powers the system...if it doesnt then its something you have done, but if it does power up,then i would say the rosewill has problems and may need to be RMA'ed...

is this pc a emachine or a gateway?

no no no..i tryed just taking out the bestec..the one that was ALREADY in it. I haven't tryed the Rosewill because i don't want to mess it up to.

i will be back in a few

it is an emachine.

check the mobo and see if you have any fried/poped/puffed caps...

No, not that i could see..everything just looks the exact same as it was, still shiny, no black spots on the mobo. I guess it is ok then? It might just be the PSU, i might of just fryed it..or hell i might of hooked it up wrong, but i wouldn't see how because i put everything back where it was.

The only other thing I did while the cover was off was take out my soundcard, vid. card, and my two fans, just to clean them, but i put them back where they were supposed to go for sure...hmmmm

I don't want to throw this Rosewill 550 in there, and it do the same thing.. but i guess you have to take risks.

But before I do anything could somebody please answer these questions to help me out:

1.If the PSU wires fit in the slots, does it matter which wires i use?
2.Is there anyway to check to see if everything else in my system is ok, before i try the new PSU?

I think that is all, and any other suggestions will be gr8,.,. thx

i had the same problem with my gateway,i also replaced my 300w bestec with a ultra xfinity 500w psu,my problem was the 110-220v switch on the psu was in the wrong spot(220v) so i pushed it over to 110v and it worked flawlessly since:)

sometimes its the most simple of things isnt it...lol....i never would have thought about that....nice find...lol

Q #1 im not sure i understand....they molex plugs will only fit in the right slots...so you can't get it wrong...when hooking up the HDD, CD/DVD, GPU power plugs any that fit will do fine...just make sure if you have a fan adaptor that you are not using its outlet to power anything...they usually are of poorer quality...

Q #2 that Rosewill should have an overload protection ciruit in it....that will keep it safe..but you may want to check that to be sure....

If you're sure you have everything in, and in tight, than it's probably just your PSU, and a coincidence. There's no way you could plug anything in wrong, all the plugs only fit what they're supposed to. If the PSU won't even do anything at all, than that's all it could really be, assuming everything is plugged in. Even if you had screwed up your video or sound card taking it out, it still would have attempted to boot.

Just plug in the Rosewill, and test it out. It's not going to hurt it. Since it's a Rosewill, chances are it won't last all that long anyway.

There's no way you're going to find out, unless there is some overt evidence, that it's not the PSU, unless you try it with another one.

Ok thanks for the help.

It is just weird that I just took the exact same PSU out, and put it right back in, and it don't work? lol, that burns my ass everytime i think about it..but i will try that
Rosewill here in a while, then I will post my results...wish my luck (fingers crossed).. :)

And how would I find out if it has an Overload protection circuit in it.. Rosewill gave me no book or anything except the powersupply, and an extra power cord itself.

omg..i don't know wtf is up..i put the Rosewill in, and made sure everything was tightened up, then tryed to boot it, and nothing?!?!..i don't know what is wrong.

maybe the emachine finally gave up?

take the powersupply out and do the "hot wire" trick to see if it still works. you unplug everything (except like one fan attached to the psu to see if it turns on) and stick a wire into the green wire on the atx plug and the other end into a black wire. i forget what actual pin numbers are used but its fairly standard. i think theres an article on tpu somewhere...

:ohwell: No to tell you guys the truth I tried everything, and well I got tired of it, so I took it out to circuit city, they ran a diagnostic scan on it, and well how can i say this..i fried the motherboard. :( :(. I went to computers plus and order the same motherboard, and just gave them the whole system, they are going to rebuilt it from scratch, with my new PSU and XFX Geforce 6800Xt for $69.99. that is a new rebuild..

I guess I will have to put up it until i can save some more money up, but until then i recon' this machine will do the job.

Thanks for all your help tonight boys, take it easy. And just remember something, always stayed grounded, I was all over my house while i was puting this thing together, i wasn't staying grounded, but hell what can i say, shit happens, and I am no experience builder, but i definately learned from that mistake.

allright from now on dont use rosewill psu's. i saw the inside of one and cringed. i have a thermaltake 420w running my dfi/x1800/3200+ and it does it with an 11.96v 12+ rail. i highly reccomend these for the cheap psus. i currently have 4 in various computers...

dude....tho it may not mean much, but im sorry man...nothen worse then being excited about your build and things go wrong and you feel like it was your fault and the excitement is gone and replaced with feeling sorry for yourself...keep your chin up.

More then likely it wasnt the grounding issue, if you didnt discharge your psu that you first removed and then reinstalled this could happen...to discharge a psu just shut down the system, flip the switch on the back of the psu to off and press your pc's on button...usually you will have a flash of power go threw the system...that is the caps in the psu discharging....

dont beat yourself up over this....a long time ago i put ram in a pc that was running....needless to say it stopped running moments after that...worse thing about this was it was a friends Dad's pc....his Dad had died in a bad car wreck just months before....

you could also try removing the battery on the motherboard for a few and then put it back in. i had the same problem while switching cases on a friends computer and searched forum after forum till i found something. might not be the problem but coudnt hurt to try.

I appreciate it man..you have been trying to help me out a-lot here lately and that is great, because I really want to get into building computers, but the expenses, and the nerve to try is just unbareable..I stess when putting a part in, because you never know what is going to happen, if it is dead already, or what you know?

But anyways, thanks man, and keep up the good word on TPU..

hey slip i started just like you man like 3 years ago. it was more then likely a bad mobo to begin with and the psu set it over the edge. when i got into it i just built from scratch. to this day i havnt killed anything by esd and i dont know where its just common sense that makes it not happen or just luck. either way shrug it off and you will get it right. when you go to reassemble just throw on some music, grab a cold one (pop or beer depending on how old ya are), and just go start to finish.
