A GTX 460 aint mainstream. Mainstream is a GTS 450 or Radeon 5750 and even at around $120 - $150 they suck at AVP in DirectX 11 @ 1080p. Dirt 2 doesn't count. The mid end cards still suck at Directx11 too. Even if you spent $300 today Directx 11 performance would be terrible in real Directx 11 games of the future. Its the simple truth.:nutkick:

Out of all the games on that list the only 1 I have had trouble with on a single GTX 470 is Metro 2033 every other game I play of max settings @ 1920 x 1080 and I play above 30 FPS on all of them!

Also you can get a GTX 460 for 130 dollars! GTX 460 is "mainstream", you sir are talking out your ass.:wtf:

There has to be a balance between good performance and better looks, and a good game will allow that balance to be adjusted by the user. Metro2033 is a bad example of DX11 implementation because turing DX11 on makes the game run like shit because the effects are overdone.

So true! IMHO If i can't play a game at max settings it isn't worth playing till I can.

I want to marry a super model but it doesn't mean I want him to be brainless. whatever happened to playing games because they were games? Super Meat Boy, Bionic Commando, Plants vs. Zombies. great games that don't need a high end graphics card. remember the golden age of PC Gaming during the engine wars? now it's all system wars. I would give anything to go back to those days.

IMO there just aint that many good games on PC anymore, its the truth. Super Meat Boy, Bionic Commando, Plants vs. Zombies all can be trumped by the sheer amount of titles on a console. Personally I'd have more preferred choices on the console before considering playing those games you listed.

And for me with OCing/building systems as a hobby I find it more enjoyable tweaking my systems and finding out how it will run a particular game's engine instead of caring about the actual gameplay it's sad but true, there are very few exceptions nowadays eg. Dragon Age Dead Space etc..

ima go install the original DooM...

i care for a games story over graphics but playing maxxed with the blood, guts and gore of todays games in awesome.

games are too linear for most ppl to care about story line these days, take a map from one of the dooms back in win95 days then take your average COD map and see which would keep a real gamer/old school gamer interested more. im 20 and id choose doom over any of todays linear crap.

there will always be that game that brings systems to their knees but seriously i think with all the new titles coming out in 2011 we'll start to see some dx11 relevance. Plus the games that are super resource hogs can usually be brought to playable levels wiht a few settings tweaks that have a minimal effect on overall pretties.

that said, i'm really hoping crysis 2 uses every aspect of dx11 and allows for some awesome pretties. my 480's are craving a challenge.

You are missing the point entirely

Out of all the games on that list the only 1 I have had trouble with on a single GTX 470 is Metro 2033 every other game I play of max settings @ 1920 x 1080 and I play above 30 FPS on all of them!

Also you can get a GTX 460 for 130 dollars! GTX 460 is "mainstream", you sir are talking out your ass.:wtf:

There are only a few Directx 11 games today and your over $200 GTX 470 is just barely able to play them today. (30 FPS at 1080p is nothing to get excited about for me) As more games are released that exploit Directx 11 you will have more and more trouble even getting 30 FPS. Be careful how excited you get about your performance. It would be wise to assess just how many Directx 11 features are actually being used before you say your Directx 11 performance is acceptable. Today for me Directx 11 is only truly enjoyable at 1080p with at least two GTX 460s or Radeon 5830s. That costs a lot and certainly is not in the mainstream PC.

And I am talking about the industry as a whole. Not everyone is savvy enough to find the best deals on the web for the GTX 460. They retail for much higher then $130 and don't forget that the prices for the 768 meg GTX 460s are dropping to simply clear inventory. The same can be said of GTX 465 as it will be phased out and eventually the Radeon 5000 series cards.

For clarification: How I categorize performance segments

Mainstream:

Radeon 5750/5770

GTS 450

Mid:

5830/5850/6850

GTX 460/GTX 465

Upper Mid:

5870/6870/6950

GTX 470/560/570

High End:

5970/6970

GTX 480/580

Tessellation also has a major performance hit as well, especially when used at extreme levels. IMO, most games should have at the very least an option to adjust the amount of tessellation used, not just turn it off or on like Metro. I get the biggest performance boost by turning tessellation off in Metro, but I wish I could just lower the effects instead.

Hmmm......

^ I can still run any game out there with my 3 trusty GTS 250's in SLi at 1920x1080 maxed.

When did the GTS 250 start supporting DirectX 11?

So what's the list of TRUE DX11 games then? None I assume. Same as with DX10. Apart from Crysis where you could really see the difference from DX9 with a performance hit I can't remember any spectacular DX10 game. As long as consoles are what devs are targeting nothing will happen. Maybe when next gen consoles will be out then we'll see improvement. DX12 by then? Anyway, besides a performance increase in AMD series 5 and 6 GPU's and Nvidia's 4xx and 5xx over the previous generations where we basically see mid-end cards performing same as previous high-end there is no catch yet in DX11. Maybe again Crysis?

No we care about games looking nice, and being fun to play and working properly, but 99 time out of 10 we get some still born second hand port of a crappy console game, that does none of the above. Consoles are holding back gaming, and have been for a while.

tessellation can be an optimization if used right, too bad no games now seem to even bother doing this.

For clarification: How I categorize performance segment

For clarification: your performance segments represent how we as TPUers might do it as. However, we represent maybe 15% of the total market for computers. A 5770 which you have listed would absolutely crush the video card in most if not all box computers sold at Best Buy at the "mainstream" price of ~$1000 My mom's PC has a 4350 in it, which hurts my heart to see lol.

Point of this message: we have a different view on "mainstream" than businesses and developers do.

We have a long wait for the adoption of DirectX 11.
