AMD Gaffe Has AIBs Ship Radeon HD 6790 with Too Many ROPs

thats some psychological application in marketting right there. Already was having doubts even way back to amd quad unlocking.

no, there is no unlocking potential. you could downgrade the rops to 16 or less in theory making the card slower.

but going from 24 to 32 rops is not possible, those are properly locked in hardware

its almost always on GDDR5
64bit= 8
128bit = 16
256bit = 32

maybe on the final cards 16 rops have their rop access disabled but then whats the point of having a 256bit bus?.

Now more people will buy HD 6790 in hopes of "getting what they're not supposed to get". Gotta love AMD's "accident marketing".

"Oops, some cards have too many ROPs, buy a card, and get lucky"

"Oops, some HD 6950 can be flash to HD 6970, get lucky"

"Oops, some dual-core/tri-core CPUs can be unlocked to quad-core, buy one, get lucky"

It doesn't take CIA to see a pattern.

It is pretty genius if you think about it. I remember when I first unlocked the 720 on here. I was so excited. Ever since then they have made the same "accident" about 20 times :laugh:

Funny thing is people still fall for it.

he meant the GTX465 to GTX470 unlocking, and thats only possible on early ones where they tried to get rid of stock(i guess) and sold GTX470's as GTX465's with locked bios's

there were shortage in 465, so some board partners opted to downgrade 470s to 465s through bios. Thus the 470 465s in the wild.

I can see this annoying buyers in particular cases. say you read a few reviews, and all of those sites got a 24 ROP card, you buy one shortly after and its 16 ROP, and your expectations of performance were (rightfully so) higher.

time will tell with this one.

Maybe re-release the 16rops as 6785?

ROPs are decoupled from memory bus now

amd:pimp: The kinder surprise of gaming

this isn't like bios modding or core unlocking because those where not reviewed in the upgraded state. Now the reviews have to edit there reviews[I hope they do] to reflect the true specs. Really though this puts the price point of the 6790 in a new light given it is so close to the 6850 but the performance will be much lower.

wait, so the card wizzard reviewed, does it have 24 ROPs??

if so, then the actual HD6790 we are gonna see retail has even lower performance.

updated the original post. amd was right, i failed, sorry about that.

all reviews are accurate. the cards reviewed have 16 rops as specified by amd

:toast: Thanks. I figured as much. Just wanted to be clear.

wow made everyone who made a comment look a troll lol (although not even one person came close to the truth) :shadedshu

wizzard why did u delete my 2nd comment... huh?

yep:toast:

This marketing scheme works for the lottery here.
By a ticket take a chance, you may hit a winner.
People, love to gamble on a chance at being the winner.
So, why not draw on that characteristic.
I got a 6950 that unlocked... I am a winner!:cool:

Well i got 4 cores for the price of too and so did many others who got AMD cpu's and if ya look at reviews the chance is pritty dam high too.

So is your review inaccurate?

EDIT just what i was thinking

Anyways does this mean reviews of the supposed 6790 are incorrect ?.
