Ok, you can check my specs under my PIC for my upcoming new PC...now comes the harder part, even though I've already asked....

The CPU...
AMD Phenom™II X6 1090T Six-Core CPU
or
Intel® Core™ i7-2600K 3.40 GHz 8M Intel Smart Cache LGA1155

btw is that 2600 or w/e what you people are referring to as the "Sandy Bridge"?:banghead:

Yeah that is a Sandy Bridge CPU... Go for the i7. Powerful as hell, and overclocks well :D

Edit :: Looking at your specs, you already have a motherboard for the AMD CPU... Obviously you would need a new one for the i7... Means more cost...

Either CPU will make an excellent gaming rig. With AMD you get 6 native cores so I would probably lean towards that but with Intel you get turbo boost. It all comes down to your personal preference. I would pick the AMD in this case.

The 6 core cpu's from AMD have a turbo feature. I would still lean towards the i7, it is a really good cpu.

Here is a good review of the CPU:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/...el-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested

Just do some research into the cpu's and pick the one that suits your budget and needs. If it were me, I would be getting the i7 though. Until Bulldozer (the next AMD cpu architecture), AMD currently have no real answer to the Intel CPU's other than price.

Don't think you can use Sandy Bridge with a GigaByte GA-870A-UD3 AMD 870/SB850 board, this is why I decide on CPU before getting the motherboard :D

If you are reusing the mobo, you have to use the AMD processor. If you are building one from scratch, go with Sandy Bridge set up. I'd go with 2500K instead of 2600K and save $100.

+1, with the $100 leftover you could get quality 2x4GB (and faster) RAM sticks for better performance (leaving two more slots for expansion in the future)

G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR... maybe?

Woops sorry that I didn't add that...I have choosen a new motherboard, but really when it comes down to it, what CPU is preferable? I really don't want to drop down to an i5 2500k, if that's the case I'd just just with the AMD 1090 six core and overclock her to 4.0ghz...

i5 2500K is actually a lot faster than the 1090T but that means you'd wasted your motherboard for nothing, 1090T compared to the lower 1075T seems better valued since you're paying a bit more (remember to get Black Edition for overclock!).

Be aware though, all the CPUs (even the same model) overclocks differently, so best of luck getting one that gets to 4Ghz.

Yea the I-5 saves me 100$...and seriously, not doing alot of heavy editing, what am I going to need 8 threads for? hmmm...I'm going to need to think about this more, as everyone is saying to go with intel because nothing uses 6 cores and the architecture of AMD chips are old :banghead:

Yeah, if you're not going to be doing anything majorly threaded then the i5 2500K would do you fine, coupled with an appropriate P67 motherboard.

old but gold. They both have harvard architecture, both employ integrated memory controller and both are out of order execution and pipelines for instructions. i5 is good but if AMD has the turbo as others suggested and the TDP is the same, I would take AMD because of 6 native core design otherwise you can't go wrong with either.

You really aren't making this easier

School time!

The current sweet spot is the i5-2500K. Very fast, good price and overclocks really well, 4.5-5GHz guaranteed.

You'll need to get an Intel motherboard, of course.

I'd definitely get this over the AMD, the fact it's got a couple more cores won't make any practical difference.

If you're not doing any heavy editting there is literally no reason to get an AMD Hex-Core at this point. With the new AMD lineup a month or so away, and the massive lead Intel's CPU's already offer, it'd be completely pointless to get an older slower alternative just because it offers 2 more cores which yield no actual performance gain (they actually result in a rather large performance loss). You're major options as most people will say are wait for Bulldozer, or go Sandy Bridge.

If you need an uprade today then definitely it's i5-2500K, price and performance. Tomorrow never knows...

lol get the i5 2500k and stop worrying about it.

Loka, did you already buy the motherboard? If so you only have one choice and that is an AMD chip. If you didn't buy a motherboard yet, you'll need a socket 1155 motherboard for a "sandy bridge" CPU.

Thanks for all the help guys, updated my CPU/Motherboard accordingly. I really had faith in AMD but your right...why do I need a hex core? If upgrades need to be done I'll use the leftover 120$ from buying the I5-2500k in the future, who knows....but thanks for your time.

No Just bought the motherboard after doing some research and looking around, got a GigaByte GA-P67A-UD3-B3 Intel P67 Chipset DDR3 ATX Mainboard with an Intel i5-2500k. Can't wait till the tower comes...I'll be ready... :D

I have a 1090T coming in the mail today with a Thermaltake Frio cooler I got from Danish Devil
on the TPU sight. I'm stoked. All the rest of my parts will be here tomorrow. I should be able
to have everything up and running by Gamer Friday. Ton's of downloading to do once I get it up.
EA store/Steam/Updates.

2600K>1090T Most apps don't benefit from the additional 2 cores.

Can you wait for Bulldozer?

Would is performance should be equal to SB. It should drive down the cost of SB some whether it is or is not. Not to mention that with the AM3+ socket, any AM3 CPU will work to pass the time until BD shows up.

this thread is pretty old, he already got his 2500k

You got this a while ago now, so how did it all go?
