ATI's R600 will consume over 250W

According to the inquirer, ATI's highly anticipated next GPU will consume up to an incredible 250 W to work. The chip will be one of the hottest ever.

"We can now confirm that the new ATI card will consume around 250W. The currently fastest ATI, R580+ or Radeon X1950 XTX consumes up to 125W in a worst case scenario and heavy 3D while you can suck up 145W out with the dual chip X7950 GX2 card."

This means that the R600 will consume twice as much power, and probably will end up close to twice as warm but we also hear it will get much faster then the current cards with sixty four pipelines. It could easily end up twice as fast than the current ATI offerings.

It is now a January/February chip, so it will be a while until we have this baby on our desk but after a long time we are getting mildly titillated at the prospect.

If that really is true, and TBH I find it a little hard to beleive, then that may bring back some equality as many ATi supporters have critisized NVidia's 8800 series for their "massive" power draw.

According to this article by the Inq http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37040, the high end 12" long XTX model will require 2 6-pin pci connectors. The XT model will require the new 8-pin pci connector and only be 9" long.

IF it has the same setup as the 8800 GTX the draw should be pretty close to the same. I am under the impression that only 75 watts can safely pass through a pci 6-pin connector and 75 watts through the pcie slot on the motherboard. If my math serves me correct, that is 2x 6-pin (75w + 75w = 150) + 75 w from motherboard. That is 225w. Please correct me if I am wrong.

My understanding is , that is the reason for the new 8-pin connector. To allow more watts to safely pass through the cable (approx. 85-90w).

I take the Inq articles w/ a grain, OK, spoon full of salt. But, they sometimes have a little truth mixed in.

Look for new Heatpipe technology on the newer cards.

Also, twice the power for 6 times the performance is good enough for me!!

Well the other lesser GPUs at least aren that bad and are better than the X1950XTX (probably).

Like it or not, the more advanced electronics get, the more power they will need.

EDIT: the Inquirer always posts these rumors which ALWAYS get proven wrong.

atx spec allows 25w per each power lead, so each pin carrys 25w. 75w total for pci-e6 and 100w for pci-e8.

How does twice as warm work anyway? Say 50C × 2 = 100C
However 50C = 323K or something × 2 = 626K = 353C
Fahrenheit conversion is different, don't remember it, though it again gets a totally different value. So how does doubling temperature work? -50C × 2 = -100C, another weird thing.

Fahrenheight = (9*C/5)+32

honestly, i stoped beliving the inq when they posted dx9L was dx10 for xp, i already knew it was dx9 longhorn, inq=FUD most of the time.

but i dont see how singel slot cooler+2x the heat is gonna work!!!!!
