News Section Feedback Goes Here

Soooooooo, was just sat here minding my own when I thought wait.... certain things have happened in TPU that lead me to question my sanity, one of which being the employment of a certain person who 2 months ago (after a lengthy ban.....) has suddenly been "promoted" to a member of the TPU staff.... yay  just wondering if I piss enough ppl off and become as contreverisial can my have a job too?

I wouldn't mind but said persons views have ever hardly been considered mainstream and haven't really changed along with his attitude, so one is left confuzzled as to why he now has to be careful of being branded a troll for disagreeing with the resident troll.... :wtf:

Maybe it's because he has qualities other than getting into trouble? You know, like writing proper, balanced news articles?...

...hence, no.

Go read his articles and get back if you think he's so far misused the platform we gave him.

Also, use this thread only for feedback on the news section.

Hey, I'm glad our news posting is making you happy. I think our news posting ninja bta deserves most of the credit though. :)

You sure arent the only one thinking that... I do agree that his articles are solid. But yeah... I dont take my kid to Chuck E Cheese if he's consistently been a bad boy, even if I found he's good at playing the games. Thats rewarding the behavior, no?

Usually staffers are someone to look up to. Someone who exemplifies the stand up character of the forums. I do know its only posting news, and not moderation/admin, but still. Now, while this forum is a bit more loosey goosey than most, I wouldnt imagine one would want arguably the most frequent offender of the rules with shed loads of bans/infractions being in a position like this. Im not driving this boat, but if I was, that insolence would not be tolerated (perma'd) and certainly no promotions handed out regardless how desperate the site may be to post news articles. You are essentially telling people its ok to behave like this... but your infractions and bans on him state otherwise. Pick one.

I havent been around here lately to see if things changed... maybe this is what was needed to stop some of that nonsense... and if so, kudos.

Oh well. :toast:

I agree. We should send this person to Amsterdam with a credit card with no limit and tell him having sex with strange woman will give him eternal life. This way he we dehydrate himself and die.

Phew, I'm glad you would never try something as immoral and just wrong as this. tsk tsk. Stern look

Now, where can I get hold of that credit card so that I can fully investigate this dreadful activity and report back?

News posting and modding are equivalent and you shouldn't put one above the other. Don't forget that posting news brings in the page views, which bring in the money, so we're pretty important. Without us, the site can turn into a wasteland. Also, don't belittle the creative process. We hardly just copy pasta another site's news - a simple bot could do that. Of course, modding is necessary to keep the forum from degenerating into spam-filled trollbait, so our mods are just as necessary and valued. The jobs are equivalent in awesomeness.

Admins of course, are the unsung heroes of the forum, implementing it in the first place and making sure that it stays up 24/7, refining it etc. They are well and truly above anyone else.

I think you missed the point...:wtf:

As you know I am an editor and reviewer at another site, so I certainly understand the value and importance of a newsie. However, to me, there is a signficant difference between a mod/admin and a newsie hence the statement 'only posting news' (vs what a moderator does here). Remember its not only newsies doing it, regular members are posting plenty of news type threads and sending newsies news to be posted as well. Since I assume you have no 'power' over a regular user, like me, that is why there is a distinction between mods/admins and newsies to me. I hope that clears it up a bit. :toast:

That said, I do believe, as you can tell from my post, that BOTH need to be held to a higher standard than regular members. I, like many others, just thought it incredibly peculiar that the person seemingly with the most infractions and bans gets to hold such a position for the site while almost constantly breaking the rules and getting b7. Oh well, at least the articles are solid!!

After reading my post, 3 more times, I still cant find where I 'belittled the creative process'. I mean I cant even find where I may have alluded to that point even ..... It was certainly not my intent to pick at the position or what is involved with getting articles up.

It was certainly not my intent to pick at the position or what is involved with getting articles up. But since you mentioned it, I decided to look over the latest articles for the week. I see a pretty even balance of reguritation (the copy/pasta from other sites you mentioned) and some exclusive (to press) articles (CES is going on too so that helps the fresh material not sourced from other sites this week). And that of course, is OK! :)

I know who you are talking about and I think qubit is doing a great job. You really should get off his back.

I edited... but I am not talking about anyone in particular outside of, well, you. :p

Sarcasm on the internet = fail!! :p

as one who has done both modding and news posting i tend to agree.

At Qubit:
You are so obsessed with sticking two fingers up to the government that you have no clue as to what this means. You think that because company "X" makes lots of money then they are somehow screwing the rest of us over. You fail to realise that it was you that helped them get that big in the first place, and are now throwing your rattle out of the pram because you can't get what you want.

Whilst I don't agree with SOPA etc, I do agree that something needs to be done to curb the blatant theft of property through an electronic method. If this was a raid on a DVD store and all the DVDs were stolen what would your opinion be? "Lock up the theives" or "Support the theives, go rob a DVD store"

Since you seem to be the only one on TPU that writes any opinion based news on the topic concerning piracy, and your views heavily sway to supporting piracy, then it reflects badly on TPU and quite frankly, I am of the opinion that appointing you as a news caster was a big mistake.
No moderator, staff member, or news editor should promote or condemn anything. It is not their job to do so.

You fail to realise that even google itself is exactly the same as MegaUpload. You fail to realise that there was HUGE volumes of illegal material on MegaUpload, from childporn to who knows what.

Why don't we do as Tatty said:

I don't 'support' piracy and I have said so in many articles. It looks as though you like to do selective reading. I've got this bit in the article right here to prove you wrong:

so this kind of totally legal voting with one's wallet, but crucially without pirating, is the one thing that this reporter has been saying for some time to do

The fact is that these big media corporations, fronted by their RIAA/MPAA and equivalents are as corrupt as can be and try to f* us over at every turn as you've been seeing. They're forever bleating on about 'lost jobs' bla bla bla due to 'piracy' as they announce record profits - in a world recession no less and they've got the nerve to do this?

Here's another fine example of their corruption, taken from a Techdirt post called MPAA Directly & Publicly Threatens Politicians Who Aren't Corrupt Enough To Stay Bought:

Those who count on quote 'Hollywood' for support need to understand that this industry is watching very carefully who's going to stand up for them when their job is at stake. Don't ask me to write a check for you when you think your job is at risk and then don't pay any attention to me when my job is at stake
That's the MPAA's Chris Dodd saying that. Do you really feel sorry for someone like this and the organization he stands for?

The fact is that the world has changed around them, yet instead of moving with the times, they are trying to enforce their obsolete business models with racketeering of one kind or another. And who allowed them to do that? All the honest people that actually paid for the stuff and made them wealthy beyond their wildest dreams. How's that for getting screwed over?

And finally, I do not "reflect badly on TPU". My articles are approved of, or they wouldn't stay up for long. I put the analysis at the end, like people where asking a while back. I'm totally entitled to add that (just read lots of articles around the web and you'll say many others do the same) and it doesn't have to be reported in a lobotomized BBC style at all. That's just your preference. And yeah, I really would like to see you top one of my articles. ;)

EDIT: I see you posted your reply here while I was writing my reply. Classic case of crossed wires, lol. :toast:

You miss the point that companies exist to make money. That is the SOLE reason why they exist, and it is NOT a right to have what ever it is they offer. If you want something you have to earn it. Simple.

You can argue that you are forcing them to act differently by telling them with their wallets. But people wont. They will still go buy stuff. And those that make up some bull shit excuse to make themselves appear righteous by pirating material so they can still have what ever it is they can not be bothered to earn has earned your "thanks" time and time again.
You are saying one thing, and doing another.

Why not just post your news articles and leave it at that. Every other post in your news threads are you defending your article and/or opinions on it. You don't need to defend yourself. You have the platform and the means to get your articles read which is more than anyone else has. Can't you leave it at that? Other news writers seem to be able to.

Well, they don't seem to get quite the snipey responses that I do, but I take your point. :toast: You're right, I don't actually need to defend myself at all. I guess I just love being part of the discussion and if someone says something to me, or about me, responding seems only appropriate (not to mention rather compelling...) Most posts to me are nice anyway, so it's not that bad and I certainly don't get as many of "those" posts as I used to.

Good advice though, I'll keep it in mind. :)

It's still being optimized. Soon it will make bacon feature smart-resize, full-screen view, etc.

I think the Twitter thing on this news article causes IE9 to go unresponsive for a while:
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=166563

For example, if I click on the page 2 link, it will lock up for about 30-60 seconds before opening it. Once it is off that page, it has no problems.

Looking at task manager, IE9 is using 100% of one core (12.5% on a 8-thread processor) while it is unresponsive which could be indicitive there is an infinite loop happening.

oh, that is a feature. it is just tpu's way of checking to see if your cpu overclock is stable

News posting should link to original source.

Linking to 3rd hand links usually leads to mis-understandings and can de-rail a thread when information is left out or mis-represented by 3rd hand articles.

This is helpful when news post are found at several tech-sites and all source the same 3rd hand article which then leads to the original source and not all information is summaries in either the news post source that is linked to an article which it self didnt translate or include all the original source information.

Having a direct link to a source is more useful to inform the readers and users of the web-site.

A source filtered through first or second 3rd hand articles can be mis-leading from its original intent. Thus puting the news articles credability in question if different from the original source.

Thank you. Our news posting guidelines prompt us to link to the "most original" source, but is flexible in cases where the original source is not in English. That's not to say we don't cite non-English sites.
