AMD's recent focus has been promoting its new Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), in addition to its Never Settle bundle, where games are bundled with new graphics card purchases. It's also no secret that the manufacturer's overclockable FX-processors aren't selling nearly as well as they did a couple of years ago. Remember the days when the Athlon 64 FX and Pentium 4 Extreme Edition processors went head-to-head in a battle for performance supremacy.
The latest rumours indicate that AMD is working on a new FX processor. This evolved chip will be called the Centurion and is based on the Vishera Piledriver architecture that can also be found in the FX-8350. The Centurion purportedly is a 5 GHz chip that will be available in limited quantities only. Whether this frequency can be achieved with an aircooler, at which voltage and what the total TDP will be remains a mystery for now. It's also unclear which socket and chipset the processor will be combined with.
Hexus reports that AMD's Centurion will have a $795 pricetag. Regardless of whether it's a limited edition or not, we're curious to see if people are willing to shell out this kind of money for the chip.
