I was going to upgrade my PC in 2 months with new Motherboard and CPU, out of curiosity I went to Corsair to check out some ram and prices are just crazy, same with newegg and the site I want to use to buy the parts in my country(Romania).

16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum over 230$, not so fancy ram still costs more than 160$.

So what should I do: Wait for prices to drop, wait for DDR4 or something else ?

I will make a new thread with my budget and other things some time before the actual buy.

Welcome to the forums :)

RAM prices are certainly painful to look at nowadays. Instead of getting a top-shelf name brand like Corsair RAM which is usually more expensive than other competitors, do some searching around the net on reviews on certain 1600/1866MHz RAM kits at decent timings and you should be able to save a bit of money.

If your interested in getting a Haswell-E, then you will have to wait sometime around September before those CPUs are available with DDR4 compatibility. Don't know if you want to wait that long. I don't know what your planning to do with an upgraded PC. Play the latest video games? Photoshop/video editing? CAD? etc...

If you're looking to play some of the latest games, then you have to build/buy a brand new PC, all new components. There's no way around it, some of those parts you have in your rig are pretty old.

Play the latest games, I could give you some example but the only thing which comes to mind is Far Cry 3 and Tomb Raider 2013, I like all genders RTS, RPG, FPS, and whatever else but I dont like racing and football games.

A total rebuild of my system was already in mind, by the end of this year I am going to have some pretty high end hardware.

Well thanks for the answer I have at least 2 months of wait time and could wait more if it is worth it and have more money also.

Wait........ NO-ONE should pay more than $100 for 16Gb of RAM. Unless of course your buying the gimmicky "fancy" type. I personally buy kingston, it has NEVER failed on Me, and My PC is a 24/7 365 machine. That corsair is REALLY nice, but I'd save the $ and use that $ for something else, where the Extra $$ makes a performance difference beyond franction's of a %,,,,for instance the CPU purchase maybe, or a SSD. Inevitably the prices WILL drop, I've been waiting for the 7950's that WERE under $280 a few months ago, to drop from the $500 that they have risen to in the meantime. You'll be happy You waited in the end, it's like an investment in time. Best of luck whichever You choose.

I can't make any predictions on RAM prices and how they are going to flucuate unfortunately. But, waiting a few months will allow you to save some more money like you said, and at the same time, "some" computer parts like SSDs might lower in price a little. But things like computer cases and power supplies however nowadays will probably never lower in price unless there is a promotional discount. If you can and are willing to wait, then I'd say wait.

if you just need more GB than performance you can take local branded ram, the price is usually lower than branded and worldwide brand ram

Ohh but I don't need more Ram at least not for this piece of ****, I am making a list of parts from which I am going to build a (Gaming)PC.

Also I am kind off tired of parts from low end brands time to treat myself with the best from the best.

Wait for prices to drop
They won't drop anymore, too late. Or buy now, or buy never.

And I wouldn't wait too much as the prices can get even worse... Which is happening in my country, fortunately I could buy 1x4GB stick for R$135 (BRL) last week, now they cost R$160 (BRL)...

Just my opinion...

Hmm, probably true in the short term ... but we could see some price drops in the future once market becomes more saturated again.

... and why's "Happy New Year" gone? It's only February

Thing is DDR4 is due soon, and if history is any indication DDR3 will be more expensive. Or the used market will be flooded with memory from people upgrading, but iirc that didn't happen with DDR2.

The past couple of months prices have gone down a bit though, I think. 4GB 1600Mhz is now about €35ish. One 8GB 1600Mhz stick is about €60ish. I have a feeling now it is as good as it will get before DDR4 comes.

The problem is that even the cheapest oem or no-name ram here in Eastern Europe still cost quite a lot, and is not that cheaper than the branded ones.

In Romania a 2x4GB kit by "Zeppelin" (first time I've seen the brand) costs a 100 dollars depending on the exchange rate. A 2x4GB mainstream Corsair or Kingston kit is 110 dollars. It's not much different here in Bulgaria. Ebay is even more expensive, plus we would have to pay for shipping/insurance.

OP's best bet is to wait for DDR4, IMO. Even if/when it turns out to be crazy expensive, the price of DDR3 would surely go down by September, plus the used market will bring more or less some options.

Ram prices have indeed gone up around 30% in the last year. But I just don't understand why you need 16GB for gaming. I was running Dota 2, WoW and Poe all together open in game on a 6GB ram x58 system 100% smooth.

A simple answer would be we don't play the same games, and even if we did there might be other things like mods and who knows what that might affect memory usage.

Thing is DDR4 is due soon

Isn't DDR4 going to be supported by haswell-e minimum half year from now ... but then again 'soon' is a very relative term

RAM is expensive everywhere. Used DDR3 sticks are almost as much as new ones, except the 2GB ones. The high end stuff, and that includes the Samsung greens at this point, is more.

In Internet terms it's a long time, in human and technology adaption terms it's an instant.

Right so we have established that Ram prices wont come down because of less production because of DDR4 but do you think ddr3 prices are turning people off building pc's when you can buy a console at a much lower price.

I don't know if this is a necro thread but what the hell here is a story when I was a kid with consoles:

I was the age of 6, my dad started bringing stuff from England, USA or god knows where and when I entered home I saw installed a console(don't know if PS or Xbox), I looked at it a little and told him to bring me something else. Next week I see another console this time I studied it more, then I chewed the wire :)) in order for him to send it back(Remember I was 6). Well he asked me what happened and I told him it was a rat(this was about 20 mins after he installed it :), he gave me a look of oh you did it again), and next week I had a PC and i have been loving it since then.

Skip the story and read this: I don't like consoles, PC is better.(At least for me)

No you won't be getting the best bang for the buck. You will be buying bleeding edge and there's a reason that the word "bleeding" is in that phrase. And, there is no real justification to buy xxx-E for gaming.
RAM prices are not that high! Why I remember when... okay, I won't go there. Prices are higher now than they were in the recent past, but historically, RAM is cheap today. I think that XP expiring is causing a surge in upgrades and that has driven up the prices. Normally, prices drop after the holiday season, but they're not this year.
Oh, why do you need 16GB?????

Go with 8 Gb of ram? You won't be able to tell the difference, trust me. I only have 16gb because I bought when it was $55 USD for 2x8GB sticks.

No you won't be getting the best bang for the buck. You will be buying bleeding edge and there's a reason that the work "bleeding" is in that phrase.

This.

Neither Crysis 3 nor Tomb Raider need 16GBs of RAM to run maxed out, or can't full advantage of a 6 core processor for that matter.

A current gen i5 with 8GBs of RAM will run pretty much everything you throw at it now and probably for the next couple of years. If you're complaining about the price of RAM, then Haswell-E is probably not the right processor/platform for you.
