R9 290-290X owners thread

Not with coolers that pump hot air back into the case no.
the reference coolers you can but not 3rd party coolers.
Yes you can, you just need the fans pointed in the right position.

My rear 140 aka 120MM Noctua blows in from the rear. The front 170 blows into the case and both Corsair SP 120's on my rad are inside the case blowing upwards through the rad and out the top and I have next to nothing for dust build up.

Its the Neutral pressure that makes it all happen. Shit i have tinsel from a Christmas tree attached to the biggest opening in my case and shes blowing upwards and keeping memory THAT is required to have a fan on them non existent
thats with gpu's that vent inside the case and the heat finds it's way out.

I totally disagree! I have the same type of twin fan cooler and my card all day wont even get into the 80's

And you say you'd take that temp all day? well you can have it lol!

I like running 1200/1400 at stock fan speeds and keeping under 65c o_O

Remember the interweb don't lie

Sorry ....You're quoting from a different post not mine, though I agree, the temps mentioned of 80c at 20% fans speeds under load are acceptable for these cards. Also card temps will vary with these non-reference coolers depending on one's case cooling setup and ambient room temps.

*+

You need to fit the case cover onto the case for accurate reading or how you plan to use the computer.
If you dont plan to use the case cover then thats fine but if you do plan to fit it you cant give reading without it on.
And this 65c max temps you cant be pushing the graphics very hard if thats the case.

I wish someone sponsored me with a Kraken :D

I have disabled the onboard video..... This is still occurring.... the machine will wake up and I see the monitor light come on like it is going to wake up but just sits at a black screen.... again if I let the machine stay sitting at the screen saver it is fine....
if I turn off my monitor manually or let windows do it.... it is about 50-50 whether or not it gets signal again....

You had a 7970 installed before?

I was having issues similar and it ended up I need to re-flash the motherboards bios.

Even though the system was fine in a sense of speaking once I re-flashed it all issues were resolved,

I flashed to the newest BIOS after my R9 290 was already installed.

Any recommendations on a 290/290X?

I was thinking of a stock factory unit with hynix memory or a powercolor pcs plus. If i get a stock unit i might get a arctic cooler or gelid cooler. Unless if msi finally launches the 290x lightning

Do this....

Its cheap to do and your perform loads better than any reference cooler out there.
Higher clocks less noise lower temps.
Not as good as full water but its much much cheaper and less hassle plus you can fit onto any gfx card latter.

For air, I'm impressed with FF's MSI Gaming 290. His video pretty much convinced me of that, great temps and noise. For water, I'd just go reference with water block if you can find it.

Seriously, stop intruding that upon others. It's annoying. And frankly it's nothing too awesome (and was done 100 times before on top of that).

Why is nobody talking about buying this?

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-165-PC&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752

I'm almost tempted but any gains would be offset by power consumption versus my overclocked Titan. The Powercolor at this current price £530 is very good value considering. Two reviews I've read on it have it reaching 1300 core. Ocaholic benched it at 1200 (http://www.ocaholic.ch/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=1233&lang=english).

Don't know what it'll go to come Wednesday (end of offer) but wow, good price for a highly binned chip with blocks attached.

I feel like Mia Wallace when she found that bag of heroin in the coat pocket. "Hello?!"
This is the most expensive graphic card I have ever bought.

See you in a month.

lol!!

No, I will be busy playing Skyrim :P

I just seen the Powercolor 290X PCS+ and I just seen the Picture of the MSI 290X Lightning, Both take up around 3 slots on a motherboard, I have the case to fit such cards, Im also getting a sound card though, I know Fullinfusion is having a blast with OCing the MSI 290x/290 Gaming, i will be sticking to air cooling.
Yes the PCS+ Overclocks the highest out of any of them, but its just the size of them that makes me wonder if its worth sticking one or 2 of them in, or should i go with a Factory unit and slap a cooler from arctic or gelid on it or go with a MSI Gaming or Sapphire TriX?
So many decisions...

I found out my tax will be sent out Thursday so fingers crossed its here friday so I can cross fire these babies. Once installed and running I'll mack another video on noise and also temps running whatever bench you guys vote on for me to run.

@Octopuss take a bit of a break and give us some info on how that baby clocks. Also use the latest amd beta driver. Its a night and day difference from the earlier beta ;)

I'm afraid I won't be able to give you any juicy information.

Even with the DCUII cooler, the card still gets fucking hot if you push it. I tried FurMark for kicks and what the... 91°C. I could fry eggs on the backplate (which I otherwise like a lot, it makes the whole thing sturdy as hell). Of course, this is a bit extreme situation, so it will probably be ok when gaming.
good thing about it is it's absolutely inaudible when idle or under minimal load.

The card is also HEAVY, and I mean it feels like a goddamn brick.
It's also sexy as hell!!

...and it can't mine for shit. Mine has the infamous Elpida memory, and I can't get it to work faster than 580kh/s. It also makes noises like Boeing taking off when I try :D I will not mess around with The Stilt's customized mining VBIOSes though. Mining is not important to me.

I also managed to mess my system up with Asus GPU Tweak by undervolting too much and having it start with Windows :D
Speaking of undervolting, this particular card has 71,9% ASIC quality, which, according to The Stilt is actually good, because from what I could gather over at Litecointalk, lower number means lower leakage.
The default voltage is 1250mV (at least reported by GPU Tweak), and thus far it seems to be runnning without problems (including FurMark run) at 1210mV. Took a few degrees (but not many) off when under extreme load.

P.S. I'll only try to overclock at default or even undervolted settings, so don't expect anything funny from me in that regard.

Mabey asus went crazy happy with the tim job? I know my top plate dont get all that hot, its warm but nothing like my ol 6990 did. And I think my cards asic is in the high 60's but cant remember for sure. That HIS card I had for only 2 days got hot and had mid 70's asic but whatever. I know we piss n moaned back before you got the card but I really thought that cooler was off, why im not sure. Olds timers setting in lol but did read somewhere that it was to little for the Hawaii chip. The most ive seen mine go even running furmark was mid 70's and think it was set to run for 20-30 min. I dont know how your card vents the heat but go look at my pic's and you can see a side shotof the fin array, she pumps alot of ait out and having a side panel with a few 120mm fans drawing air from the card would be sweet. Did you watch my non professional you tube video on the sound of my card? If not go check it out. Mabey im getting such great temps is from the one af120 blowing on the ass end of the card. Really that fan has been there sense I installed those 4 sticks of trident memory that need a cooling fan on them and didnt like the ugly cooler gskill included in the kit. Mabey try something like that because fuc me 90c!!! Something isnt right unless that cooler really is a dud.

Antbody else here have octopuss card so he can reference some info? And @W1zzard please fix this dam laggy tpu app please! Not the one on the m browser but the andriod app. Thanks

Thats for a 290x but still thats hot as hell. Octopuss has the non X and hitting those temps. Something dont add up unless its a crappy cooler and we'd expect better for om asus. If I spent that much for a non reference card with better cooler and was hitting those temps it be going back for something else

your cards do run that hot @100% fan speed and there very loud from the vid you posted.
I had a 280 msi card and i found the fans very loud and identical to yours,
I allso had a asus 780 card , much better cooler than the msi one.
