First Review

Whoa that's a lot of results.
So at normal games it's rougthly 290x/390.
In games that favor nv, it's faster.

PS
Dafuq is 970 EXOC?

Is there some kind of curse by nVidia that prevents these guys to bench it vs stock 970?

PS
DX12 results somewhat contradict what gibbo said (1fps diff to 390x, which isn't even in that benchmark):
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4qd3va/390x_strix_oc_vs_rx480_dx12_benchmark_1fps/

There were very few Nvidia reference 970's. They released as AIB cards from the get go, like the Fury card. That's why you see so few reference 970 results. Kind of opposite of Pascal release.

So is there an analog output on this?
My second screen is a VGA one, but I should be able to use a 480 in conjunction with a 6670, just for the outputs, right?

Is it just me or is the card performing rather better in newer games compared to older ones. Also... drivers.

AMD Killed VGA with R9 - 200 series.

Yep, btw Project Cars and few more should not count as benchmark.

Also OCed 970 + 980 vs Stock 390/290x

Check your post, it's mixed up! :p

You're right, this is a bad review, he should take out all the games that AMD performs bad in. Oh and definitely take out those temp & oc results to really make this card look good.

Nope, EXOC is the lowest overclocked model (1164 Mhz base/boost to 1317 Mhz), above that you got HOF (1228/1380).

This is likely no coincidence and part of the FUD campaign of the competitor.

Just wait for W1zzard review if you want to compare it stock vs stock.

Yeah, they didn't use the connector, but you could use a DVI-VGA adapter like I am at the moment. Unfortunately, I only have HDMI Inputs on my main screen, so my second screen would be unusable without splurging for a $50 active adapter.

So long as crimson works nicely with older drivers, I can take the card from my HTPC and exchange it with my 280x.

All nvidia has to do right now is bring out the 1060 with equal or little over 980 performance at 299 or lower and AMD is in trouble. IMO

he should take out all the games that AMD
Asking for a fair review is asking to skew results nowadays.

bring out the 1060
Because 960 was so impressive, was it not?

Anyhow, 1080 is 65% faster than 980.
1060 will likely be half of 1080 (shaders et al).

Idle temperatures are excellent, which is no wonder since the fans don't stop in idle. During gaming, the card goes above 82°C, which results in lower clocks due to Boost 3.0.

Idle temperatures are fine; idle-fan-off would have certainly been possible. Under load, the card reaches its thermal limit of 84°C after a minute of gaming or so, which will cause it to lower Boost clocks, and, as such, performance.

temp.gif

Temperatures are good, but they are capped by NVIDIA's Boost 2.0 algorithm which is set to a 80°C temperature limit. Clocks will be reduced slightly if the card gets any hotter than that, although they will never drop below the base clock. Our graph further down on the page details this card's clock distribution.

temp.gif

Temperatures are quite good. After seeing numbers in the high 90°s during recent AMD reviews, the 83°C we see from GTX 780 Ti feels almost cool. It's good to see NVIDIA bump their 80°C temperature target, which I felt was a bit too low, up to 82°C.

temp.gif

Temperatures are good in both idle and load. NVIDIA's new Boost 2.0 algorithm is tuned for an operating temperature of 80°C, which is a good balance between noise and heat.

Nvidias stock GPU can't even able to hold the maximum clock ... what is the point to OC something if maximum gpu clock already drops.

Don't start it ....

83° on OC is perfectly fine especially a 10-15% OC.

RX480 = 91° on a 1.5% OC and anything above crashes the system.

Both are reference cards btw so this is apples to apples.

Don't start what exactly?

Where did you saw 10~15% OC ? Boost clock dropped already with stock clocks.

Boost clock should count as Default clock.

You won't OC ur CPU to 5Ghz if it can't even handle Turbo on 4GHz.

I can overlock my 290x to the moon with custom bios, but it useless if clocks will drop after 5 mints bcuz temperature limit.

I been planning on getting this Club-3D DP to DVI Active adapter so why not just get it so I can run DP in the future on my monitor? :p

I think they will change 1DP to DVI, or they could add 1 more port. any way 2 DP is to much for mid-end card..

Hmm, not gonna base my judgement on that one video alone, but things aren't looking very good so far. Even though older cards the GTX 970 and R9 390X are on discount and apparently offer superior performance for a similar price, in Croatia at least. I just hope the RX 460 does somewhat well.

Take into consideration that the drivers will improve performance by some margin. As it happens with every new card.

Have to wait until official reviews, can't believe this is just at GTX970 level.

Of course, but drivers can only do so much, and I'm gonna kick myself for saying this but that video, or this card so far, don't make much sense. I mean, they made a new overclocking tool. Even though this is a reference model and overclocking is, or should, be limited, this doesn't overclock well. The reviewer didn't manage a 1,9% overclock from 1266Mhz, so that puts it around 1290Mhz and yet XFX will sell overclocked reference boards at 1328Mhz. This whole situation is fishy as hell and makes little sense.
When they announced this I didn't put my expectations high, by saying VR performance my minimum was set at GTX970/R9 290 so performance wise I'm not that disappointed.

Here is to hoping it can top a stock GTX690 - been waiting to upgrade for years now, and a single gfx card that can match a GTX690 for <$300USD is amazing value tbh
