msmpeng.exe is Windows Defender(a completely useless program in Windows 7). You can get rid of it by turning off Windows Defender in the Tools section in Windows Defender, and then going into services.msc and disabling the Windows Defender service.

I've been on Windows 10 for almost a year now and Windows 7 is unbearable for two reasons:
1. Right-clicking on the start menu doesn't bring up a short list of everything I tend to use (Power Options, Programs and Features, Event Viewer, Command Prompt (+Admin), Control Panel, and Run).
2. Windows Update on a clean Windows 7 install is broken. I have a computer sitting here that has been at 50%+ load for over 12 hours and it is still "checking for updates."

Both piss me off, the latter extremely so. Let me add a third point:
Windows 7 shipped with Internet Explorer 8. It reminds me of trying to use Internet Explorer 4 a decade ago on a fresh install of Windows 98 SE. I was trying to download drivers from Sony with it and the CSS's do something that makes them unload which causes the website to be unusable.

TL;DR: Windows 7 is a dinosaur and it shows every bit of that 7 years of age it has. It is XP all over again and Microsoft made the right decision to kill it off as fast as possible. It's a shame so many people missed or refused the Windows 10 upgrade offer. Every time I see a Windows 7 computer now, I want to put a hole in a wall with my head in anger and frustration.

I completely agree. I can't go back to Windows 7 after using 8 and now 10 for the past couple years. I've had 8 on my main PCs for at least a couple years, and just recently put 10 on my main PC, but I've had 10 on my daily driver laptop for almost a year, and I really like it so much better than 7. When I go back to using 7 now it just feels so dated, and I miss the improvements that came with 8 and 10.

Besides the right click thing on the start menu(which I really don't benefit from because I still use ClassicShell and just configure it so all that stuff shows up there instead), there is the much improved file transfers and the much better task manager. Then there's the quicker startup, proper UEFI support, proper support for GPT drives and the ability to boot from them.

Yeah for me my old laptop(Turion X2/8400M/4GB) was literally collapsing under the weight of Win7 eating most of the RAM and that Win Updates thing just going nowhere. Win10 is much friendlier to it never using much over half my RAM and didn't even have any issues with drivers for the ancient hardware.

That was how I knew there were updates avaliable; the computer became unusable. That was on several different systems btw, I have no idea what causes it. Yeah it was but I had, had enough of it. I tried Win10 on it when it first came out and went back to 7 pretty quick but when the deadline was looming I gave it another shot and glad I did. The only thing I "miss" is I lost some functionality with my touchpad(can't swipe forward/back in my browser anymore) That is about all I miss.

As is Linux Mint. It has about as much hardware support as Windows 10 (in some areas, more, like UAC 2.0) and doesn't take 12+ hours to update either.

1. The management menu in Win 8 and 10 is infinitely useful and something I wish 7 would have. Alas if you don't sysadmin much it might not be nearly as intuitive or useful. For folks like me, it makes managing my own and other users PCs more convenient and efficient to do by fast tracking us to accessible items to manage said PC.

Again, for those that manage PCs this feature has proven infinitely useful. Those that don't likely won't care about it.

2. Windows update on 7 SP1 is a slow pain in the ass...even using Solaris17s batch script only goes so far to alleviate that.

Doesn't matter though, coming very soon Windows 7 and 8 will have monthly update packages like 10. It'll be wise to continue updating if only for maintain security.

Frankly, I prefer Chrome over FF. IE and Edge both are in the low end category for me...they work well enough, but Chrome, FF, Opera and Vivaldi are better IMHO. But that's my experience...others may be different.

Folks have a right to prefer what they like, but everyone should form opinions based on experience. With that said others should be able to express those opinions without being bashed on. We're here to help eachother...that's what TPU is and has been about. Let's keep it that way.

After you run the 3, go to updates page and ask it to look for updates.
I've done this many times now and it picks up the updates right away.

I've updated hundreds of computers and there is no guaranteed path to make Windows Update not make you wait for more than an hour. The only route I had luck with is a convenience rollup slip stream DVD that also installs the convenience rollup update post-install. If you just do the convenience slipstream, you'll wait. If you just manually install the convenience update, you'll wait.

IE11 is moot because Windows Update doesn't use it. Additionally, IE11 can't install unless it has two critical updates installed first (would have to look up what they are). One of those critical updates requires a restart or the IE11 install will fail.

Net Framework 4, that's why it goes better after the update. (It gets auto installed with IE11)

Hmm interesting, because I'm currently on a potato PC running a dual boot of Windows 7 and Windows 10. Windows 7 allows me to play Unity based games and a couple of others without stutter whereas on 10, despite my best efforts, I can never get those same games to run smooth. (both on the same drivers)

Every other game seems to function normally on 10 and I defintiely prefer the OS but I must say that Windows 7 updates perfectly and runs very smooth for myself on this shameful rig

I was actually toying with the idea of going back to W7 for a while, like a year or so, as I miss Aero and there are a few annoyances with W10 (nothing too serious).

Then I remembered that my external backup SSD is encrypted with the more secure version of BitLocker that only W10 supports and realized that I can't go back for this reason alone. <sigh>

Not .NET 4. One is something about imaging. The other is a generic windows update. .NET hasn't required a reboot since 1.1 which installed an ASP.NET service.

Mailman and I have been using Windows 10 for our work since its release and I cant go back to windows 7. It way slower.

IE11 requires a reboot, so I don't understand your gripe. The addition of Net4 is why the remaining install of the 227 updates goes smoother, then you need a few more rounds of updates.

The best thing about Win 10 is that you can routinely update your USB ISO which reduces initial Windows update by A LOT.
