Memory 16GB DDR4 OC @ 3000MHz
Video Card(s) EVGA RTX 2070 XC Ultra
Storage 4 x 250GB PNY SSD & WD BLACK 1TB HDD
Display(s) Samsung UHD 4K / BenQ RL2455HM
Case NZXT H500i
Power Supply Corsair 750W
Software Windows 10 Pro
So I think I have a powerful PC here. Specs are as follows:

Core i5 3470 @ 3.2 GHz (4c,4t)
8GB DDR3 1600 (16GB on my shopping list, had a stick die on me)
Radeon RX 480 OC'd @ 1380 core and 2100 mem.
SSD for Windows 10, 7200 RPM HDD for games.
BenQ RL2455HM 1080p Pro gaming monitor 60Hz (really really awesome display)

So my performance in my main game Battlefield 1, is as follows.
~ 80 FPS on Ultra, and ~100 FPS on High.

Is it normal that even though I am using a 60hz display, that I am totally able to see the ~20FPS difference between high and ultra? Are there any performance settings for better FPS under ultra to reduce tearing?

Also, can you recommend a lightweight free Antivirus or am I best off with Windows Defender?

Thanks guys.

If you have vsync off you'll see as many FPs as the system is capable of with tearing. Check with what AMD has in driver control panel as an equivalent to Nvidia fast sync, I'm not familiar with it. I'd say Defender is enough, no problems so far for me.

If it's posting at 60Hz, you won't see any difference above 60FPS except maybe some screen tearing artifacts.

I can certainly tell the difference between 60 and 120 FPS in BF4. I imagine it will be the same in BF1. And yes I am on a 60Hz monitor. Going back to 60FPS feels fairly sluggish to me.

What you feel is a reduction in input lag with the higher framerate. You're still not getting any more than 60fps on your monitor though, because that's how fast it refreshes.

The tearing is unavoidable with vsync off, too. AMD doesn't have an equivalent to NVIDIA's FastSync to get round this either. You should just lock to vsync for smoothest video, or leave it unlocked for lowest lag, you can't have both. FastSync would have allowed you to have both.

Your PC is a fairly midrange spec, especially that graphics card. If you upgraded the card to a more powerful NVIDIA model and replaced that monitor with a 120Hz, 144Hz or faster model, then your rig could be considered high end.

I use Kaspersky, but it's not free. Can't say which free ones are good.

If your monitor is 60hz, go into AMD settings (Under Gaming) and set your Frame Rate Target Control to 60.

LOL! :p Your OC'd GTX970 only does 80fps max at BF4 Ultra @1080p.....

Just stay on 1080p at 60fps like me and you'll have a high end rig forever

Using windows defender+comodo firewall free for years on our systems, with a malware bytes scan now and then, never had any virus or problems with it.

Windows Defender + Malwarebytes works like a charm on Windows 10. No real need to get anything else if you're on W10.

The only ways to prevent tearing above refresh rate are Vsync and its derivatives.

From my quake experience you should be able to clearly tell the difference between those fps even at lower refresh rates. Heck I can feel the difference between 250 and 120 fps at 144hz refresh rate, specially when I go from the higher to lower fps.

False. I could easily get up to 105-120 FPS, map dependent. 4X MSAA. That was with my GTX 970 with a nice OC. Now my GTX 1070 + minor OC gets that at 1440 with 4X MSAA.

Thanks guys. I am keeping my settings on high. Screen tear doesn't really bother me too much but I need low input lag.

I wouldn't say that CPU is the best for that game. Kinda low-ish clocked unless that BLCK can go up a bit.
