Hello everyone. I have had my R9 290x for almost two years without any issues (minus a bad fan which i recently replaced).

Today I was playing overwatch, and for the first time ever, my screen went black stating "no display port."
Rebooted without any image issues.
Launched game again same thing happened.
Updated drivers to latest AMD drivers.
Rebooted game again and same issue happened.

I am now reinstalling the game.

If this continues to happen, what are my options here?
Also, at times when the image cut out (black screen), the fans went full throttle.
The temps are acceptable, not overheating.

@AsRock was having like issues, he replaced thermal compound on the gpu die and i believe the thermalpads, he also replaced his PSU and still has his 290X card.

Maybe I should replace my PSU? It's two years old and was 120$...

Welcome to electronics, they are printed circuit boards, no guarantee whether they will last 2 months or 30+ years. AsRocks PSU was under warranty still when he replaced it.

You may want to switch monitors too.

Well. I am ordering a GTX 1070 by NVIDIA tomorrow. I anticipate I won't have any issues. Pricey, but worth it, considering I am an avid gamer, and won't need to upgrade for a while !

At first I was waiting for Asus cards last year but I didn't buy Asus graphics because I didn't like the "external fan header" connector part.... Which you need to connect to the motherboard.
MSI was cheaper and comes with great cooling and they are quiet as well so I bought this MSI card.

Asus makes a good motherboard but Sapphire makes a better GPU.

Fyi keep that card and do the fixes to it, and test it, if the issues are resolved keep it as a spare or sell it off. All board makers are subject to some issue with cheap thermal compound and pads.

Ran fan speed at 100 % load temp is about 65c (in mini ITX), my room is a lot cooler today. So i am thinking maybe it is getting too hot?

Playing overwatch no crashes... No crashes in 2d either.

System restored to yesterday, reverted back to older drivers. Card still makes that "tick" sound here and there but does't give me a black screen.

Was it due to temps ????? Hope this continues to work as a I enjoy my R9.

Also installed MSI Saphire TRIXX just to look at temps and information (dont like ASUS GPU TWEAK).

Yup it was too hot in that stuffy
case. Ambient temps play a huge roll in whether a part runs or doesnt, swap die compound and thermalpads on ram and vrms, or get a case with better airflow.

AS5 will work but can be capacitive possibly conductive if it falls on electrical traces, so take extreme caution when using it. Otherwise I'd Say Arctic Cooling MX2/MX4, ASCeramique, Gelid.

I use bitfenix spectre pro led fans in my case, see specs, cable management is key too. If need be put a fan by the gpu even

Glad you listened dude, AsRock Fixed his that way.

Definitely a paraffin based thermal pad used, they all do it because its quick and easy, reminds me of the skt 7 days.

That TIM was dried out. Is the card still working?

My advise was given because I was thinking the card didn't have a warranty left and I'm a former Folding Editor on another site and have seen pretty much everything, even on my own GPU's. I use Artic MX-4 on my cards and when I run out I will try some of the Grizzly thermal compound.

I never understood why manufacturers put a million heatpipes on their fancy coolers if the copper part of some of the pipes isn't even touching the goddamn damn die. That's the whole point of it , if it's not in direct contact the heatpipe will simply not work. If they bother to put them for design and marketing purposes , at least they should make them functional and solder a base on them , it's ridiculous.

My cpu cooling pipes don't touch the cpu directly and I'm heavy OC on a "slim" cooler.

What I meant is that not every pipe has a clear transfer of heat from the die therefore they are almost useless so it's a flawed ineffective design. That CPU cooler you have has a base that makes it so that all the pipes transfer heat they way they are design to, I may have not made myself very clear.
