AMD Vega Discussion Thread

What you said there means Fiji is a monster in raw power. That monster was mainly held back by software and by its arch not being best for DX9-11 and lower res than 4K due to single CPU thread usage. Agreed. By that logic, if Vega's arch is changed from Fiji's in order not to depend its being used properly by the software should be performing very well. Especially in 4K gaming that shows raw power more clearly as Fiji's position in 4K chart shows.

In an ideal world where hardware performance won't be hindered by software.

Yes. However upon learning to code for OpenCL I have found that it is a lot easier to be lazy and let the hardware designer handle the optimization part.

Didnt they reduce the number of asnyc compute engines from 8 on fury and 290/390 to 4 on polaris (and im assuming vega too)

I never bothered checking if this had any effect in non-gaming usage

Fiji was never supposed to run ~1050MHz. The sweet spot in terms of power efficiency for 28nm Fiji is actually around 800~900MHz. The release of 980Ti forced AMD's hand so they had to up the game a bit, leaving the FuryX with only 100~150MHz overclock headroom. I have tried this myself. Undervolting Fiji and keep the speed around 1GHz actually reduces power consumption greatly(roughly 25% less power consumption in FireStrike Ultra, 1GHz FijiXT core with -25mV undervolt)

I don't really think that was the case entirely. I think the silicon in Nano was just better binned and on top of that had a lot more power saving mechanisms , core clock would fluctuate greatly between games even though temps were technically in check. I mean it had just 1x8pin connector but could overclock almost to the same clocks as the Fury X so it clearly used less power. My point was that Fiji was not meant to run under heavy thermal/power limitations.

it's 8 on Vega as far as I know , more async compute units did't make sense in Polaris given it's design I guess.

If this is the "baby vega" then we have some good stuff to look forward to from it's bigger siblings.

Hope this is wrong because AMD will have to redo their math, because I don't know how with all of the improvements they advertised they endrf up with lower ipc product.

Like all similar datacenter cards they require tons of airflow in the case they are installed in

Yup those two fans in the back blow air straight in to the fins and being server fans they are very high rpm moving a lot of air.

R9 Fury X may the best optimal GCN architect in their hand now.
The weak point was handle by many recently driver to solve those already.

Interview of uncle Raja's (the peanut with salt sellers) from January, 2017 respectively that Vega architecture need more optimize from developer and driver team. I guess maybe 6-9 month later from product release date we'll
see balance price/performance point for discussion to buy his RX Vega base
products.

2 year proven R9 Fury X still best choice for us at $300 price tag.
Its feature are all Windows 10 Red Stone 3 which schedule release this November project need.
+ Support WDDM 2.2
+ Support HDR10
+ Support Direct X 12 API
+ Support Vulkan API
+ Support VR
+ Support VCE Video Codec..etc.

What was the point of showing us your desktop?

I laughed so hard on that one :laugh::laugh::laugh:

If your interpreting your desktop ala head shrink Style
GCN was the same as sunset. The horse represented RX Vega power.

Let me 'ave a go

Your Desktop Icons show your a busy person with a Crowded personal Space
Your Taskbar shows your a little traditionalist at heart
The horse Repesents you turning around and looking at where the heat that was warming your posterior is coming from.

what in the actual fuck ... did I just read

His clock on his desktop tells me he is from the future. :p

i bought recently my nvidia gtx gainward glh 1080 after having tons of amd gpu (4850, x1300 xt, 5870, 5700, 290) and the control panel didnt change since my 6600gt LOOOOL. The new grimson panels is much much better. it is true that almost all new tech introduced by amd works for few months and then disappear

Spare me the effort... what wasnt fair about that review? :)

A little bitching from amd's mouthpiece doesnt say much.

Edit: it was god damn highly recommended... wtf is that tool talkong about???!!!

I guess he agreed that Fury should have done better :)

You miss the "Computer" desktop on the icon, like me. :( You know you can put ye old "Computer" icon back on the desktop via Desktop Icon Settings, right?

Also it appears you're remoting into that environment via an Android device.

You cannot in Server 2012 R2...I tried, at least not without forcing it into workstation mode.

All of my machines on 10 are done correctly  lol

I just did it on my Server 2012 R2, just have to search for desktop icons under Control Panel because the general search function is too stupid to search the Control Panel. Thanks Microsoft!

Interesting I will have to look again. Wonder if it changed with an update I looked in the control panel last time. It could also have been me working from my phone through RDP to set it up...

Hey hey hey folks, back on topic. We are not discussing desktop pictures in here! Vega, let's talk about vega!

So where did you get that background picture GT90?

My server. :p I removed a lot from that picture.

I think Raja is going to spill some more, non-technical details about Vega on the financial day. For example, I wouldn't be surprised if he says what SKUs are going to be generated from Vega so we'll know how many cards will launch over the next month and a half. Other than that, not much to talk about until AMD spills the beans.
