Hands down one of the BEST RPG games of 2017.

See meta critics here
http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-4/nier-automata

The action, the story telling, the mind_fu*cking plot, the deep philosophical meaning and dat ass of 2B. Man you should totally play this game!

Also it has some of the best soundtrack of any recent RPG games I have played.

Play it men, you will love it.

Also I would like to devote this thread as our official Nier Automata and all related discussion.

As for optimization, if I turn off MSAA and use VSR upscale to 4K as well as far mod it runs pretty smooth on my FuryX. So most people should be able to enjoy the game really well.

Only warning, after you get all the major endings you may end up with crippling depression, or just depression. I am not kidding. A game so good that you cannot get your mind back out of it.

LOVED this game. So much I even re-bought it on PC after I was able to repair it. Got the collectors edition for my PS4. Have 2Bs figma on a shelf above my PC.

I thought it had some massive flaws. Horrendous fetch quests, lots of backtracking, a general pain to grind for random materials (more backtracking), not all quests were voiced, graphics could be very underwhelming in areas and more. The entire 2nd chapter was a waste of time. The hacking mini game was merely there to speed up the process of repeating the entire previous chapter. Outside of two missions every story mission in chapter two played exactly the same (minus the repeating hacking mini game). Chapter two was an utter slog to trudge through. Also, cheesy cliche anime style conversations that were grating on the ears (9S' operator/assistant). The story was certainly nowhere near as complex as most make it out to be. The enemies, their actions and diolgue was very B-movie / cheesy anime inspired and eye roll worthy.

The third chapter added some good bits to the story but was sadly shorter than chapter two (which is 80% a retread of the first). It does add some context and the small bits from chapter one & two add up, but you may forget some of it due to the terrible fetch quests. It did have a nice BGM, a nice lore, and a good feel to the game. Certainly some care was put into the lore. Combat itself I found fairly fun and the GUI wasn't too bad to navigate but could have been better.

But the game had many downsides. It needed stronger differences between 2B & 9S to make chapter two worthwhile, much better side quest activities & some more refinement. Playing the game was like a roller coaster with lots of ups and downs. I started out fairly indecisive, then started hating the game for its shallow quest design, but the end does round it out. Worth a try, but I cannot say it is a "great" or even "good" game when it has such massive flaws. I'd consider it "okay" and "decent".

If you have nothing else better to play give it a go.

Things i like:
My game of the year for 2017
I have purchased a physical Soundtrack CD
Long term emotional story
Amazing combat as i liked it from Bayonetta and DMC
Japanese voice actor selections was good
Graphics were nice
My favourite soundtrack from a game from recent years
Recommend doing various side quest to gain more NPC development and lore of the world

Things i didn't like:
9S hacking made him overpowered
Fetch quest were tedious
Some of the quest required advancing the story to gain access to the area
Some of the area wasn't easily accessible without a specific pattern or advancing the story
PC with endless bugs despite having FAR mod, it was only playable after couple driver release from AMD (Not sure about Nvidia)

I'm in love with this game from when was announced and got it DAY 1 on Pc.
The only thing i don't like after finishing all the major ending is the empty spaces on the map that could have been used for expansions or dlcs with more areas to explore but nope.
I'm not good at writing reviews so i simply say that is worth it .
Is a great game that should have needed more love from the publisher with fixes and maybe more content .

Have you get the one DLC released?

Have you get the one DLC released?
Yes but are only arenas to do where you get prices like clothes and stuff .
Don't expand the world you can explore or add anything at the story or secondary missions.

Hands down one of the BEST RPG games of 2017.
and i hands down agree... i still play a lot on it, i got it day 1 on STEAM.

Soundtrack, gameplay, story, graphics (not all graphics but they are fine)... everything in it ... goes as i would have liked it to be (after following it when they announced a new "drakengard series" back in the days ) the lore is way wider than it is for those who didn't started the series with the last one on PC

from Drakengard to NieR:Automata

i hated the flood of "bug bug bug bug bug" negative reviews ... specially when the solution was just a few search away ... or simply the negative reviews about "anime" ... seriously if you don't like that (or tolerate that rather) you don't buy any games from a Japanese developer/publisher

PC with endless bugs despite having FAR mod, it was only playable after couple driver release from AMD (Not sure about Nvidia)
well that game is known to seemingly hating AMD ... (without any reason .... ) i don't know if it was because of FAR or because of the game ...
that game is one reason i am almost happy of my 1070

it's already quite big without expansion, tho i could use some more "NieR"

nah .... it's a masterpiece ... being a grind or certain "quest type"/voicing/anime (oh come'on...) being annoying is down to the player liking ;) (or efficiency sometime ) "okay" and "decent" are really weak wording for NieR

If you have nothing else better to play give it a go.
it's really hard to have something better to play ... unless you finished it ...

ahhhhh to each their own, i guess :)

when i bought it i saw that youtube video ...
Nier: Automata- I can't recall ever being so captivated by a game. At least not in the last decade. I think maybe I'm going a little crazy. Regardless, I haven't been able to string a single non-Nier related thought together this week as this review has all but consumed me. Even now, I am still deeply unhappy with it as I feel it does not do the game justice. But I know I wouldn't be happy with anything I produce at this point, so my hope is that you enjoy this review more than I did, and if you hadn't thought to purchase and play Nier, that you might revisit that decision.

typical case of "hearing the voice of reason" and he's spot on .... for a converted

I had problems on the 970 aswell funny enough lol,it took drivers from GPUs to improve it lol.

well i didn't get any issues... but i am a "rollback" aficionado ... specially with Nvidia ... and since when i got NieR my driver was the one from 6 month prior to his launch ... i guess the latest driver from NV did f*ck up something ....

i rather take the blame to Nvidia than to the developer, they are way more un-reliable  (half'a joke)

Well..lets see if square will pay more attention to their FF15 release on PC market lol.

A little hidden ending from the live concert:

I bought this on steam when I had £5 iff via PayPal, still need to play it

Well you're entitled to your opinion, but in mine poor gameplay design (some of the worst quests/missions I've seen), inconsistent quality (parts of conversations voiced, others not voiced) is far from being a masterpeice.

Insufficient resources to begin with. They never thought it would be such a big hit across the globe.

If they have the resources back support like say EA, it would be a lot different.

A lot of RPG from Japan are way under appreciated. Some of these games invoke pretty deep philosophical conversations with the players inner core, which not many would actually enjoy.

At the end of the day, you cannot get a game to satisfy everyone.

That is "if" or "could have" but the reality is the quality just isn't there. Even ignoring that some of the side quests are pretty bad. I know more money may have helped with it, but I believe that has more to do with unimaginative/lazy game design.

the issue lies with the user then ... it was not a game for you, that's all ;)

i am not the only one to call it a masterpiece, it's quite "worldwide"

but I believe that has more to do with unimaginative/lazy game design.
right...
then it's really more
I know more money may have helped with it
still it's more than respectful and impressive what they did ... okay they should have spread the fund more evenly, put less money in artwork and music developement and do a "so-so" game then ...

i admit it's missing a a little something tho.

unrelated to you, now ;)
what amaze me, it inspire a lot and it's taking a wider dimension than "just a game"

ok not only metal cover ...

i saw popular games having less, fan art/cover etc than NieR:Automata.

Hardly. Somethings come down to taste, but other things come down to quality. All the artwork and music in the world cannot make up for poor quest design. For a game that came out in 2017 there was no excuse to have it filled with so many lazily done side quests. Funding isn't a factor here, the end product is. You can't deliver something substandard and say "well it would've been better if I was given more money!" and expect me to congratulate you. A few things could have been done without spending much more time/money to help the side quest quality in any case, but the developers decided not to pursue it.

As for fan art that is very typical for any Japanese game. Probably because people who like anime and other Japanese culture related things happen to like Japanese games. It is a very common trend, just visit the reddit of any game by a Japanese developer and you'll see a disproportionate number of cringe worthy anime fan art.

Nier wasn't horrible overall (although some parts certainly were), but it really needed a lot of work to be able to standup to higher quality experiences.

Some pretty long reviews coming out now.

33:07 cracked me up

I do wish next installment of Nier will be available on PC as well.

well ... when you are almost (notice the almost) the only one complaining about quality, then it's actually a question of taste...

mmhhh .... did i make seems as if i didn't know that?... my bad ... (sorry ... usually i am a heavy sarcasme user  ) also ... 2B is nower near the level of Kaine (well not before 3c3c1d119440927) 2B/E is missing something Kaine have :p:roll: (nope it's not shown in the following pictures )

for you actually yes, it could have needed that .... but that's... user taste again ... since quality wise, and with the "fund level" implied it's on masterpiece level and nope, it's not isolated to me ... (i have read it was called a masterpiece before actually calling it that after playing it thru and thru ) it was certainly not substandard nor did the developer complain about money albeit the funding being a major factor ;)

more i re read your post more i am sure it's a user taste issue

"with critics praising the game's narrative, characterization, thematic depth, music design, combat system, and mixture of different gameplay genres, as well as its usage of the video game medium to tell its story, while criticism was leveled at the game's visual and technical problems."
reading that, i can agree on technical problems (after all i use FAR) but visual ... i agree less

to me, and not only me it seems, as long as it's above 80/8/4* scoring, then it's on masterpiece level (39 for Famitsu but it's on 40 :p and the PC Gamer 79 is close enough to 80 well it's US ... no surprise its 1 pt lower ;) )

wow ... that's a very extensive review

also it's Drakengard, actually "Drag-On Dragoon" calling the series Drakengard is like using a NATO codename..., the origin ... so i rather wish for previous games PC release (i played NieR on X360, lucky me it wasn't a PS exclusive ... damn you Horizon Zero Dawn...tho it was only Gestalt, Replicant was JP PS3 only ... ) rather than a next installment (mostly since i doubt there would be a follow up, after all it was a "limited budget" production, it's not because Square-Enix is the publisher that the funding is "AAA" level  )

i love the DLC ... it's having a lot of "wink" in it ... [This DLC pack adDS “Revealing Outfit” costume for 2B, “Young Man’s Outfit” costume for 9S and “Destroyer Outfit” costume for A2.] all three outfit are related to the previous game, the Revealing Outfit is the one from Kaine in Replican/Gestalt, Young Man's Outfit is the one from Nier (Replicant) and Destroyer Outfit is also from Nier but the young adult version (Gestalt)

Fetch quest has always been a staple in a lot of JRPGs really, some are poorly done or a lot of them a flat out boring but the rewards may be worthwhile.
A lot of them aren't really worth doing unless you need resources for upgrades.

But like i said in my previous post there are good chunk of side quest which adds more lore which are worth doing like the Amnesia and Wandering couple.

let's not forget the quest that hint at the Type E androids .... by far the most heartbreaking plot in the story .... even for an android ... (not telling more, no spoils :p )

Still on my bucket list, this. I'll be honest about it and say that the weirdness puts me off a bit. And I'm a Shin Megami Tensei/Okami/MGS/SotC/DMC fan at that...

Inb4 all of you saying 'that's what makes it great' :D

Weirdness ? In What?

Weirdness ? In What?
was wondering the same .... specially coming from someone that is a fan of SMT... weirder than a SMT game ... is really hard for most people ... (i don't count in ... to me SMT are perfectly "normal" )

that aside .... Okami/MGS/SotC/DMC are "normal" AF :ohwell: creative but not too weird ( "" are used because "normal" does not really exist ;) there is only degrees of weirdness. )

Inb4 all of you saying 'that's what makes it great' :D
it's not what make it great ... it's a lot of other things that make it great, wait .... awesome ... rather...
