When I was just a kid I didn't have a good attitude with computers, I even freak out when I didn't find the correct letter on the keyboard, but since that moment I started doing things on the computer that I had.
My first laptop has gone through so much messes that I don't even know how it survived for 10 years. I started downloading cracked games, dealing with viruses and with windows problems since the beginning. I didn't really know what to do, but I learned so much things taking wrong decisions and trying to figure out how to resolve the mess I created. That poor computer started with windows 7, and then I installed not 1, not 2, but 3 freaking linux distros + the regular windows installation just because I liked them. Then I learned how to resolve a grub error with the bootable devices.
It has suffered a lot, but I disassembled it, cleaned and even replaced the processor, solved gpu's artifacts and another 100 different problems.

Then I started heavy gaming, and I built my first desktop pc. And guess...... Also this has suffered, but not like the first one. Then I upgraded it, changed GPU, Mobo, Ram and processor.
I also started knowing overclocking basics, trying everything to squeeze out the maximum performance from what I had atm mainly because I think it's fun to beat limits imposed by oem manifacturers.

Now I started university and guess another time... I chose the computer science course, because I also like programming when I'm not trying to burn components to beat OC records.

I still have all of the prevoius pc I used and for me they represent the long journey that I had with IT since I was 8 years old. I've learned so much basically myself and I don't regret anything I have done, because that messes gave me the opportunity to learn and improve.

Now I use my main rig to game, surf the net, watch and edit videos.

I guess tits kind of like art too, a way to express your inner geek. I should have said that in my last post. I haven't seen any one with a pc like mine recently, so its unique. As is every other members configuration, as long as it isn't a cookie cutter me too type build I guess. I like looking at the threads with everyone's builds. The same build could go through many evolutions, ideas that are tried and tested, passed or failed. And its nice to see peoples creativity. When I see those builds, I am not impressed with the cost, I am more impressed with how they utilised the whole package, and tweak it.

TLDR: I-unno. It's fun.

I'm going to go with that as my overall answer.

Technically my rig does a combination of work and gaming, but that is not it's point, nor how it started.

Game development in general is an artform I have dabbled in. I even had a pretty decent 2D space-sim with procedural generation before that was a buzzword at one point. But the story was never finished. Probably never will be. Thus is the torture of the writer.

Evolution is true. I've just realised that the only components left over from when my main rig was a Phenom 965, are a couple of HDDs and the DVD drive before I consigned it to a drawer.

I built mine around all tasks tbh. My wife is a programmer so needed something that was cheap but effective in that field and then in modest gaming (so I got a used GTX 1070 for that matter and a 4770 I grabbed from an old dell I turned into a media center machine) and for my website, then now starting a business which then turned around and used the website for. Then now I am dabbling into video editing with Davinci Resolve and photo editing with GIMP. Also store wedding photos, our kids baby photos, etc.

I really need to build a NAS now.

Have to hand it to yeah, your not one to miss a chance to show off your rig. :)

Cuz it's so ugly from every angle, and weird and asymmetrical - I just LOVE IT! :p

I hear you man. 3 out of my 6 case fans have been in use everyday since I want to say 2004 but maybe 2005. I have a lot of old bits and bobs left over from the years, but those fans have been in at least 10 of my past systems, and will probably follow me to my new one whenever I decide to spend. Except now they have 2 more buddys that can tag along only if I can make them fit, since they are 120x38.

I only recently changed all the fans in my main rig and passed them down to my FX8350 machine. They are the original Cooler Master fans that came with the Storm Trooper, but were beginning to get noisy after about four years, so yours @freeagent have done sterling work.
But as per the OP's question, it's more than just a gaming machine to me. It's something to look after, tweak and upgrade. A bit like my motorbike really.

I grew up with computers as my uncle taught me how to build one and then rum some BASIC programs til I pursued BS Computer Science.
It was a hobby then and now it is a passion, making extra money from system building for some folks, doing repairs, maintenance here and there.

My own rig is also my entertainment center and extra money maker in streaming PC gaming (altho I only made 10$ from it, tis a start that needs more grinding to make it work):toast:

What does my rig mean to me??....

Well.. Tough call really I guess...
As with everyone there's always been something that has knocked us down or kicked us about or what have you, so ever since I've lived at my home now in Somerset, I've had multiple rigs, doing mostly gaming and until a few years ago when I got my IT job, WCG and FAH crunching/folding again. I was out of touch for a good number of years..

Still, all of my rigs just seem to always be there whenever I need a distraction. So any break ups, issues with seeing my eldest daughter, whatever the reason really they've always been there as a distraction. I do remember when I was chasing numbers in HWBOT for a UK team and without any support or sponsorship, I was up to 5th in the UK... Now whilst it was an amazing ride, I did think what the heck was I doing. It wasn't so healthy staying up till 5am some mornings (thankfully different shift patterns then!) but aside from the masses amounts of money I was pouring down it, I thought, hang on...

So now I have got back into gaming a little (definitely not as much as I'd like to, my now youngest won't let me as she wants to try and help ) and I'm trying to use my rigs for the greater good for Cancer research and FAH folding. I've all this horse power laying about, I'd like to make the most of it :) I know some think it's crazy and stupid, but others are just happy and enjoy the pictures of what loopy ideas or things I/people do. I'm ok with being loopy though, I like to be an individual, my own person :)
So with the gaming and the crunching, I love my music and trance podcasts (there's a site I'm always keeping up to date with the latest podcasts out there... Trance Pod Casts .... It's brilliant if you love that sort of music :) It's my way of chilling out and relaxing, whatever the day has given me :)

So with all that, it's a distraction, a sort of companion but it's always a way for me to relax and just enjoy my hobby and keep in touch with a load of great people here at TPU :) There's other forums out there, but I'm more pulled towards TPU.. It kinda feels like home :)

I hope that didn't bore anyone to sleep or worse.... :)

I designed my 4670K system as an engineering number-crunching productivity machine, but in reality I do zero productivity with it and just play games or watch Youtube. It's actually my laptop that I primarily use for studying because it helps get away from those distractions.

I run a network and a home server for my community. I own many PCs. I build them, I network them, I configure them, and I use them for entertainment purposes and practical use. I also make PC repairs. PCs are practically my life. So yeah, PCs mean a lot to me.

Not intended as self-promotion though my website (now converted to a business/reference site, though if you go directly to the older/personal pages the old menu comes up) I have about 50 songs from various electronic artists (some including the first you'll hear I made myself) that you may enjoy at https://www.jabcreations.com/music/playlist-2.8?track=57. Note: I keep having to fix the layout on the music pages though the links to play various tracks should all work.

Wake Up you sleeping doofus!

You'd had a fortnight off laying around on your soft tooshie transistors quiet and peaceful with no power applied and now it's the New Year and time to WAKE UP!

There's so much work to finish and complete in this new year 2020, and YOU have to finish it. :)

...like duh! :)
