Word of warning: Large pictures, you're better off clicking on each as it will reduce it in size or if you know how I can change them into thumbnails that would be awesome if you could help me out :rockout:

So... having read many recommendations of the cheap chinese 6-heatpipe coolers from various andom internet sources (the snowman) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000293017167.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.7f184c4dbNPhwj

I decided to "take the plunge" and ordered one on the 30th Dec (2019). It "promptly" arrived on the 22nd Jan which isn't all that bad considering.

First impressions before unboxing where that the box it was shipped in, which was the actual product box with no other external box which it was housed, is that it was quite flimsy and thin cardboard and it had definitely taken a bit of a bashing during it's long 3 week trip from China to the UK, none the less there was some foam padding inside so it "might be OK right?" Wrong.

Here's some pics of the heatsink and hopefully you can see from my poor HTC one M8 camera pictures that it's not quite symmetrical or straight in a few different ways.... LOL.

So... it seems to have taken a "few knocks" alright.... BUT aside from that the thing just doesnt seem to be very straight, it's kind of leaning, it's slanting and it's just a bit wonky also....

I could deal with that, I mean I've had a few HSF turn up in the post that have the occasional collection of bent fins where you can see it's obviouslly took a bump on it's rather long journey I mean, it doesn't look AS bad with both of the 120mm fans attached and you can barely tell that the thing isn't really straight in any which direction.

The kicker for me, is the base, the 6 direct contact heat-pipes, which do look so darn pretty in the stock photos on aliexpress... HOWEVER.... (and again excuse the poor camera shots) the reality is less pretty and pretty much deems it a product that is not fit for use, observe:

Now the real ballkicker in all of this is if you look at the 2nd and 3rd pictures right above this comment, you will see that not all the heatpipes sit flush together and in fact there is a difference of probably 1mm between 2-3 of them on the whole, which doesnt sound like much of a big deal, but this means, I won't ever get contact with all of the heatpipes onto the CPU heat spreader and in fact only maybe one or 2 maybe making direct contact with it once installed, making 6 heatpipes a waste of time since most of the cooling potential is killed by piss poor manufacturing and quaity control.

My options are as follows:

1) It was only £16, it came from China and well.... we know how cheap products that come from china usually end up

2) I could try to use it and just be really generous with my TIM (thermal paste :p ) to see if that will fill the gaps and make up for the shoddy finish, though I;m not sure that much TIM would be able to compensate for having such an uneven base when you have the cooling potential of 6 heat pipes versus maybe 1 or 2 that are actually making good contact with the CPU.

3) I could try to lap the base to try and get a smooth, flush and uniform base (as it should have been) though this in itself carries risks, look at the dents in some of those heatpipes that was done during the manufacturing process. I don't know how thin these heat pipes are and trying to shave as much as a 1mm off some of them and getting a flat base could result in my lapping too far and weakening said heat pipe, or even puncturing one/any of them.

So I guess as the old saying goes, "if something seems too good to be true, it usually is", or "you get what you pay for". You can take your pick of both of those as I think both are as applicable as the other in this case.

No not your fault at all. Send it back.. sucks man. Not entirely shocking though. China wants our business and this is how we are treated

Ouch, thats some bad luck but it doesn't always happen.

I happened to have the 4 Pipe model around,my brother ordered it for a friend but its still here:

No damage on it luckily.

On the other hand I've also ordered some phone cases/tempered glass screen protector since I can't buy those in my country and the hard case I've ordered is bent so ye thats the risk you take when ordering from that far.

Demand a refund. If they didn't package it properly, that isn't your fault.
I have applied for a partial refund, reason being is that you can either apply for a partial refund and state your case including pics and description and hopefully get some of your money back without returning the product or you can try for a full refund providing you ship the item back, I know it costs them literally peanuts to ship from China but it would put me out of pocket just sending it back so I'm hoping I get my partial refund (£12 of £16 I have asked for as the product is pretty much unusable)

Looks like someone was bad at shipping or you just got bad luck. I recently got a RGB heatsink for my 775 build and it came in fine. When buying stuff from China (I choose AliExpress) and I read comments before buying

It was Aliexpress, though the shape of it just looks like it's taken an almight bash from the top or bottom to make it completely out of shape, bent fins withstanding. Though still doesnt explain the heatpipes being so out of whack with each other, I would need a lot of TIM to try and fill in the gaps and havent even bothered installing it cause I'm not sure that would make a bit of a difference

Clearly it was the Corona Virus. When I have problems with stuff I ordered from China, they either tell me to keep it and refund it or I get screwed. Haven't had much in the middle.

Honestly, I would be more worried with damaging the IHS than cooling performance
Ya I guess so, I only have a Athlon 200ge atm which I have running overclocked at 4ghz but I happened to have one of the first 1600 Wriath Spire's kicking around which has the copper core and even at 1.4v and 4ghz when I slapped this thing on there it barely hits 60c under any load, though I do plan to upgrade the athlon to a 2600/2700 or a 3600, guess I'll just have to buy another aftermarket cooler when that time comes.

Anyone here know, if using an excessive amount of TIM to make up for the heat-pipes not being level/flush could that make up for it or is it like using a band aid for an open wound? another picture of the base:

A little TIM is a great thing. Too much and it becomes an insulator. And that picture shows that it's just not worth the effort to repair. One of those heatpipes has broken away from the baseplate.

This is exactly why i wont buy used things (anything outside of cars) because of shit like this. Nor will i buy something that has foreign words etc on a box because thats just asking for a bad time.

it wasnt used, it's just from china.... used might have a better life span :p

The OP stated he bought it new. And I buy used items all the time, rarely do I have problems...
I buy used regularly, mainly GPU's and have rarely been put out of pocket that I can remember in the last 10 years

I don't mind at this point taking a hammer to the heatpipes (gently) to try and realign them lol

I would apply for a refund.

If that doesn't work, or if they don't want it shipped back, I'd clamp it in a vice, and made the heat pipes as flat to each other as possible, using flat steel plates for alignment.

Then, sand and lap the copper pipes to a flat surface.

Then use the cooler, expecting less than usual out of a free or cheap cooler.

No way I'd keep it without a discount.

that looks like it came out of the bin the scrap bin packaged up and sold on Aliexpress as new well because it is new however it was never meant to be sold it was meant for recycling

I wonder if they are glued or soldered :wtf:

Since its already coming apart, you should help it along and let us know

i mean that sucks, but i bet it cools the same...

you could prolly buy a cheap metal piece and then dril some holes through it to make a custom top plate so it doesnt look as janky.

It should be ok, if a straight edge looks good up against it your ready to rock

I got a china cooler didn't take long and to get and it actually kicks ass for $15. I believe you just had bad luck of shitty shippers mixed with terrible packaging.

Hammer did good, yes there are a couple of dents but all in all it looks good compared to what I received, let's hope I get my money back

Brian from TechYesCity youtube channel recommends these all the time. I was wondering what is actual user experience with these as this cooler seems to be cheap and overall having good design.

P.S.
Please edit opening post to hide pictures in spoiler tag so they do not load without reason.
