hi everyone.
i collect speakers, mostly 4 OHM ones or bigger if i can find them. i've got 8 currently connected to my PC through two seperate amplifiers, and they're all around my room. nice sound, but i have a lot more speakers which i don't have room for, and i was wondering if it would be safe to put them all in a box together, because i fear that the permanent magnets inside them may weaken each other or something like that. any thoughts?

nope .. jsut watch the ohmage, dont want to burn up ur speakers or amps ..

forgive me i meant for storage, not for opperation. and the speakers are free moving, not housed in wooden boxes, as i dispose the boxes usually. i know that electric motors can sometimes kill each other if stored together, so i just wondered if speakers do the same

Speakers don't have motors they have coils, and they wont break if you put them next to each other. You can box them if you wish, if you want to stack them on top of each other, use a piece of cardboard in between layers, this will keep the cones in good condition

Bro,

Nice to meet a person with the same taste that I had, Even I used to make my own custom Amplifiers and Speakers (buffels), and I earned a lot of pocket money by selling them to my friends at school :D:D:D:D:D ,

8 speakers connected to your comp is great lol, :toast:

BTW without a Boom Box !:eek::eek:
Noway!! The generated sound @ high volumes must be terrible right??

ok this is what , Just speakers without any Boom Box (box that is used to get all speakers to a one) cant deliver any candy waves , I mean you cant experiance the real Bass in a song or whatever.. The real Bass is generated because of that box. Without it you hear Solid bass only, So 1st thing is that you must get them in to boom boxes.

2nd is you cant just assemble your speakers in to a box in your own way, Mainly when talking about speakers with boom boxes (buffels) are divided in to 2 categories ,

1. 2 way buffels
2. 3 way buffels

2 way buffels mean the sound output generated in a buffel is divided into 2
(2 speakers r used mainly or you can add more)
(1spk = high freq sounds , 2spk = mid and low freq. sounds)

3 way buffels mean the sound output generated in a buffel is divided into 3
(3 speakers r used mainly or you can add more)
(1spk = high freq sounds, 2spk = mid freq sounds, 3spk = low freq sounds-bass)

and there are major differences with speakers that are used to deliver low/mid/high frequencies.

And specially , you cant just give the direct line frm the amp to speakers, inside the boom box you should have a small e.circuit to divide the frequencies to suit the speakers'

Also remember , Boom boxes cant make as you want, there are special measurements for it and it should be make with heavy material such as MDF boards and should be air proof unless except the exaust.

its silly to think that , p.magnets in speakers will get weak if they are put together lol :wtf:

Alright lol I think that you gained sumthing frm this abt basics if you are a novice

And if you really want any help in making the boom box and putting you spks together
just post a reply

with all the details about your speakers (how many u hav al together, Size(diameter), ohms, voltage, frequency response, manufacture etc.)

I know there is no such pleasure such as listening to rock or hiphop with your hand made amp and buffel.

PS: Dont use 2 amps , the sound delay effects the quality

Good luck on your work , :toast::toast:

Yeah it's fine. BTW you are talking to a speakeraholic. At one time, I had 48 speakers in my room, only 8 of them being used, the rest were being stored.

You want real quality sound, you go and get yourself a vintage amp Yamaha Natural Sound, Harman Kardon, or Kenwood, and you hook it up to good speakers of today.

I used to deal in vintage audio and nothing quite beats a Harman Kardon amp with Bose Interaudio and JBL G50 bookshelf speakers hooked up to it.

Make sure they are seperated by something, do not allow the magnets to touch each other or any of the metal of the speaker next to it. Keep in a cool area.

Actually they have both coils and magnets, The coils in speakers are the same as those in an electric motor. Stack them cone to cone, and if stacked magnet to magnet make sure you have a couple inches of seperation between them.

Actually magnets can loose their strength and become useless "hunks of metal/ceramic" if stored improperly. Never store magnets touching magnets, or touching metal.

Just some of many known facts about magnets.:toast:

Yeah bro , its true in case of magnets, yeah we all know that magnets can loose their strength by not only improperly storing but also by a sudden vibration, jerk that occur when it fell off and also by an high voltage electric shock, thats bcoz the + and - molecs in two poles get together and bcom neutral.

But these are speakers , didnt you notice that edge of the spker cone that has the magnet and the visible area of it only has a 1 pole to get contact with others so theres no such effect happening, i dun n o much about science but I also has a collection of speakers, about 12 and even I store them improperly bcoz those days i used to deal with spkers and amps as ma hobby , and i never experianced a such thing.

However the thread starter's Q was, whether is it safe to put speakers he got in to a one boom box , thats what i told is OK (mounting 2 or 3 or more speakers in to a boom box )

jc 316,i have a old harman kardon festival 300 system, its a seperate pre/power amp, horizontal loading tape deck and cd.it does sound lovely with my mordaunt short ms902 signature speakers connected with qed 25th anniversary silver cable.its starting to overheat now tho' if its on too long, which is a shame.

Take her apart, and give her a good cleaning.

I think he's talking about storage, and if it's safe to store them with the magnets touching!

But, hey it's all good information about speakers.:toast:
