Possible upgrade.

Is it just that one comes in a fancy box.
Pretty much yes, one is retail package the other is for system builders /oem's plain package no fancy box, warranty may be affected also so just check the warranty details on scan.

As I thought 12 month warranty for OEM and 36 month for retail.

The 2nd one is OEM, the first retail, you pay a bit less for the OEM version because it comes with 12 months warranty and the retail has 36 months. Prior to S1200 CPU's the retail also came with an Intel stock cooler, OEM's never did.

Oppps xman beat me to it!

Getting a bit fed up with delays, delivery date is 21st September now for the retail one and the oem is in stock, sorely tempted to go for the oem.

Go for it, chances of it failing after 12 months without user input is slim, you still have 28 days doa and 12 months rtb with scan for the oem, plus you save a tenner lol

I had not bought a retail CPU for 10 years until I got this 10600k and that was only because retail only was available in the first week of Comet Lake's release here.

Just phoned Scan and they told me they had an email in this morning regarding the processor and they are getting stock in this week.

Retail processor on its way to me being delivered tomorrow. yippee

Would it make any difference if I upgraded my ram to this.
Upgraded from what? Your current Corsair 32GB ( 4x8) DDR4 Vengeance LPX 3000MHz Memory?

No. Yes. NO!

No. It won't make any difference.

Yes. "On paper" (benchmark tests) you might see some improvement in the numbers.

NO! In reality, your brain will not be able to see any difference at all - even though your brain may make you think you see improvements but when in reality, there are none (placebo effect).
