Microsoft in Talks to Acquire Discord for $10 Billion

Microsoft is reportedly in talks with Discord Inc. for an acquisitions that sees Redmond pay $10 billion, sources tell Bloomberg. Discord is a major chat and collaboration platform popular with gamers, e-sports athletes, PC enthusiasts, and the tech community at large. The platform currently has over 100 million monthly active users, and has grown in utility as a collaborative work and learning platform owing to its free service model, providing not just text, but also group video. Discord has, in the past, been in acquisition talks with Epic Games and Amazon, so it remains to be seen if the Microsoft offer goes through.

The what now? I doubt that anyone uses Discord as an enterprise solution and I also doubt that anyone uses Teams for gaming.

That would be true in 2019. Come 2020 with the pandemic and Discord moved to open it's target audience to anyone while Teams became free.
Functionality-wise, they are similar and achieve the same goals.

I still use a very old mobile app version (9.5.1), because with newer ones the sidebar is closed, which totally blows. I bet that will stop working.

And they may ditch the website version and force you into an App on PC.

Likely the current accounts system would be maintained and there will be made a addition to have "enhanced" connectivity for Microsoft accounts, a justification could be to use in Xbox whenever its chat functionality is finally overhauled, for example. Then, one or two years passes by and you'll be warned that Discord accounts will be discontinued and offer you to "bind" them to a Microsoft account, otherwise it will create a "virtual" Microsoft account with very limited functionality, besides logging in to Discord.
Yes, this is what happened with Skype, if anyone recalls.

The thing is, I had seen news that Microsoft had plans to "re-launch" and have a limited free for consumer use Teams, and then have the full Office 365 Pro dependant Business-oriented Teams that requires licensing.

I use teams for work. Discord is mostly just gamers, they are not competitors nobody in a business uses discord.

I use Microsoft Teams at work, and it's dogs***. The UI by first appearance is similar to competitors, like Webex Teams, but it has a number of big problems. Scrolling through old messages is 10x slower than Webex teams. The UI is incoherent at times where elements you're trying to use disappear or get moved to the background for no apparent reason. It doesn't play well with popular headsets from plantronics and there are many complaint threads going back years of people complaining yet M$ never fixes anything, like the mute or disconnect buttons on the headsets not being recognized by the app. There are other issues but in short whoever designed the UI and whoever handles the hardware integration at MS are incompetent.
