The Samsung 980 is the company's first attempt at releasing a DRAM-less SSD for the consumer market. While such designs usually are slow and have terrible random write rates, Samsung has found a way around that. Our Samsung 980 review confirms that this is one of the fastest SSDs you can buy.

I'm a lot more concerned with its relatively high load (88C FFS!) temperatures. NVMe drivers are often installed in laptops and you wouldn't want to get so much extra heat inside.

BTW, I haven't noticed power consumption figures. It would be great to get 'em.

Compared to the Samsung 970 EVO, the performance uplift is 7%—I'm impressed
3 year of progression and only 7%, in games no diff
Thermal test without sticker? i removed my 970 evo sticker and temp is 7c lower

Games are ever-increasing in size these days, some so big you can only fit 5-7 of them on such a drive... Yet here we are, still stuck at the same $/GB

88°C is not high for this test. Also do not trust software readings, lots of drives are cheating. Look at my thermal camera pics (end of thermals page)

Faster than you think... in my defense water isn't exactly the best at conductivity. It's not like the brain operates on liquid metal.

Gameloadtimes are not only the hardwares fault; its also the OS and specific gamescode that factor in. That said if they could all work together and speed everything up that would be great :) They did something of the sort with PS5, but we need more speed :)

Samsung gets around having no onboard cache by using system memory instead so basically does the same as every other cacheless SSD's then where what they should have done was instead of using HMB perhaps they should have gone HBM on the controller instead

Indeed, but they do so in a way that's MUCH faster than all the other DRAM-less SSDs

HBM is much too expensive for that

Price has dropped to $110. @W1zzard , is it worth a redo of the Performance per Dollar chart?

Edit: Also looks like the Hynix Gold P31 1 TB has also dropped, to $108 Don't know if this is just Prime Day prices.

I am very happy to see that my Adata SX8200 pro is still doing great in the charts.

Missed the P31, but I did place an order for this one.

Does this mean that the Samsung driver is a must for this drive?

No, the Windows default driver is perfectly fine and what I used in all my testing

Wow, that's a fast response.
Did you mention the used disk driver on the TestSetup page? I skimmed through it but couldn't find the info.

I did not, there is really no choice, at least for all other (non-Samsung) drives. Might actually be worth an article doing a round of testing MS vs Samsung

I just bought one of these to replace a smaller half-TB drive that I'd like to no longer have to worry about space usage. Glad to see that this DRAM-less SSD can still go up against the more expensive SSDs. I snagged one for $99.
