WHEA 17 Error w/Z690 and RTX 30XX series GPU's

Swapped my fully functioning 3090 TUF OC, 9900K, Z390 Gigabyte Designare setup for a brand new Z690 and 12900K rig.

After swapping all components over to the Gaming Wifi MOBO and 12900k combo, install WIN 11 and I get thousands of WHEA errors for ven_8086&dev_ 460d&SUBSYS_86941043&REV_02

Swapping hardware back to the old MOBO and CPU results in zero issues so it isn't a hardware failure on my end.

When on the ASUS Z690 Gaming WIFI board and 12900K I get random hangups, BSODS, and straight crashes.

Another Reddit user with a 3080 is experiencing the exact same thing with a different ASUS Z690 board but because he isn't water cooled is able to trouble shoot easier. Turns out swapping the GPU to the gen3 PCIE slot solves the issue. Also removing the GPU completely and running off the iGPU solves it. Manually changing the speed of the first slot in BIOS doesn't solve the issue.

Why would plugging the GPU into the top slot GEN 5 PCIE result in this error? Is it an Intel CHIPSET driver issue with how it is communicating over that lane?

Seems to be a somewhat common occurrence now and using the 2nd GEN 3 PCIE slot appears to be the only solution at this time. So far neither Intel, NVIDIA, or MOBO manufacturers what to recognize it.

are you using a PCIE riser? My friend had this issue with his itx system and the other guy that is posting is also having a riser issue @ gen 4. (if he set it to gen 3 he would fix his issue as well).

If not just manually set the top PCIE slot to gen3. Should solve the issue. Maybe a bios bug - it's not an overall 690 chipset issue-- my 3080 is running with no whea errors and @ pcie-4.0 without issues.

For now I would set it to Gen 3 and issue a support ticket to ASUS.

Yeah it's a mobo bug. Set it to x3 and forget about it for a month, then update bios.
 
Fixed. I had to disable native power management and ASPM in BIOS. Then I had to disable link state power management in power settings on desktop.
GPU is now running as it should on GEN 4 with no errors.

Update: nope, getting new crashes and artifacts with those settings disabled even though the WHEA 17 error went away.

I put all those settings back for ASPM and Native Power Management. Now back to running at PCIE 3 no errors.

Only thing that works to rid of WHEA 17 error is putting it to gen 3 or turning off native power management. ASPM has no impact on the WHEA 17 error, only Native Power Management turned to disabled. However, turning off native power management in BIOS results in artifacting and lower gpu performance...absolutely crushes GPU performance in 3dmark.

Very frustrating.

Trying MSI board tomorrow.
 
Please, if you have the Z690 Hero follow these steps. I have completely got rid of all the WHEA bullshit as well as BSOD.
For all of you having issues with ASUS Z690 HERO related to m.2 drives, or WINDOWS WHEA errors resulting in BSODs, all you have to do as for now, and hoping ASUS finds a better solution is plug the disks on the HYPER m.2 card bundled with this motherboard into the G4 PCiE port. No BIOS odd parameters, no nothing. Operate them as PCIe 4 if needed. That has solved all my problems and so far so good. 2 weeks now and 0 issues.Hope it helps. Please give it a try and let me know if it worked for you as well.

Did you try a different GPU to rule out the board/s and CPU?

I made an account here to chime in after this comment, as not only am I not using specifically that board, but I'm also having this error, among others, and have done quite extensive troubleshooting.

Obviously since DDR5 and z690 chipsets are quite new, I didn't have other parts / builds around that I could swap things around with, but do have the luxury of a fairly close microcenter so I purchased an extra z690 board (different manufacturer), 2 additional kits of RAM (did NOT mix and match, just tested the different kits), and another 12900k.

Results:

I encounter this issue in either system. GPU has functioned in a different system without causing this problem.

My first thought since everything works in the previous computer (minus the CPU and DDR5), is check the memory for errors. Run memtest86 which boots from a flash drive. This will help eliminate memory being the problem.
 
Also got the WHEA BSOD problem

4x8GB DDR4 3600 CL16 Kingston

Problem started after updating BIOS to F8a (support for i9-12900KS)
And at the same time board started with 5 short beeps during POST. (you need to mount speaker to MB for that)
PC would crash 100% for sure if I ran benchmark in FarCry6
Removing my Samsung 980 Pro 1TB fixed the BSOD problem, but still got random 5 short beeps at POST.

Updating BIOS to F8b or downgrading to F4 or F7 does not help at all. Still BSOD and beep problems.
Funny thing thou is that even thou it makes 5 short beeps (CPU error) it boots into Windows.
Even tried another CPU (Another 12700KF), but same problem with BSOD and beeps

Wonder how many people are affected by that WHEA BSOD.

Funny thing is. The WHEA BSOD is only in Windows 10, it was not before trying Windows 10 that I got the WHEA BSOD
In Windows 11 I get "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED" instead.

So Windows 10 WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR all the time and Windows 11 CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED

I hope that Gigabyte will find out what is causing this annoying problem. My PC went from 100% stable/reliable to crashing very fast when playing games.
I could do memtest with no errors and even doing 8 hours of stresstesting with Aida64. But start a game and POOF!!! BSOD

Gigabyte's press release specifically mentions users being faced with "WHEA PCIe errors when paired with some PCIe Gen4 graphics cards." WHEA is short for Windows Hardware Error Architecture, but the important thing is that these are PCIe Gen4 problems. Gigabyte notes that there is a workaround to the problem; however, the workaround is "setting the PCIe speed to Gen3 through the BIOS." Losing PCIe Gen4 capabilities of their shiny new(ish) Z690 chipset motherboard will certainly be unacceptable to any enthusiasts affected.

Yesterday I've build very small PC.

Z690-I, 12700k, 64GB, 3090 TUF, 750W, Lian Li H20-X4, 2x 1TB M.2 980 Pro
Righ after start i had problems with MB not seeing M.2_2. But I ran OCCT and it showed WHEA.
When I run TM5 WHEA bursted into 1280 Errors in 15min.
I've corrected the M.2_2 mounting (Hell on Earth when it's all built).
But WHEA persisted. So I turned off Link State Power Management in Advanced power plan settings (Power & Sleep).
WHEA dropped to 12. OK. So I went to BIOS(UEFI) and forced Link GEN4 por PCIE_16.
Still 4 WHEA errors. So I went to BIOS(UEFI)- Advanced->Misc->PCIE Native Power Managemet : switched to DISABLED.

Outcomes:
1. No WHEA whatsoever.
2. When GEN4 PCIE link is forced the PC is starting like 3 times faster.

I built a new computer with the ASUS z690 UD AX DDR4, i9-12900k, MSI RTX 3080, 32GB DDR4 3200 Memory with a 1000 Watt PSU.

@Grendel602, I switched the cards riser from 5th gen to PCIe lane 3 or 4th gen and the computer posted, There is a bug within the 5th gen PCIe causing crashes, black screening with random reboots or no post at all

Pretty unfortunate thing to run into, took me all day and I finally found the fix, thanks.
