Wondering if the old Oculus Rift-S is even worth messing with this day and age?

I can pick one up that was barely used for $175.

Is that even worth messing with?

I got one, still use it when i can (back issues)

They take far less setup and space than most of the competitors, have wide support, no facebook requirements (steamVR 'just works' once the oculus software is installed)

Only upside to the newer options like the quest 2, is full wireless mode

IMO its funny to see the implication that the Oculus Rift-S is old,...... :)

I still have the original Oculus Rift with Touch controllers and two sensors. Now that's old and probably not worth it today. I think of it as a quasi collectors item at this point.

I still use my Rift S a lot for PCVR. I'd say grab it. I really like my Quest 2 but even wireless link isn't as clear as the Rift S but still very good. It's well worth $175. Sorry, I'm late.. lol You may have already bought it. lol

Unfortunately the purchase fell through.

I use mine for sim racing...lower refresh ...but no god rays...I have many HMD's but use that for PCARS2 and such
Great! You can go here and fill out your specs and add your HMD's.

sorry it fell through, the rift s is the easyist headset ive ever used and a deff inprovement on the rift and the quest 2 is very nice too with no screendoor (well what my old eyes can see) and the contrast is darker and better res, i use a 3rd party link cable cus im into pc games skyrim, fallout, HL-Alex ects and my wireless isnt upto it. ive been seeing the Rift s in good condition go here in the uk from £150 to £180 which is cheap as chips in my view. hope you find another bud.

I enjoy my Oculus Rift S however I feel that this enjoyment level will depend largely on what type of VR content you consume the majority of the time.

I bought my Rift S because one game looked great: Half-Life: Alyx. I didn't even buy the game on Day 1, I fiddled around with the Rift S and dabbled with some cheap/free apps until Alyx was discounted. Alyx is a game changer.

However, it appears to be one of the few. I was hoping that Alyx would trigger more developers to create VR games of that level and yet I haven't seen it. I'm not sure if any of the simulation games have figured this out. I don't have a driving wheel so the auto racing games are out. While the visuals are nice, Star Wars Squadrons don't seem to be really playable with the Rift S controllers (if I'm doing something wrong, please point me to a simple tutorial).

The best implementation I've seen is the MotherVR mod for Alien: Isolation. This is a mod, not a VR-specific title but it works well. All of the creepiness of Isolation is magnified wearing the VR headset while you're looking around trying to see if the xenomorph is hovering over your shoulder...

There is more passive VR content like movies and videos (and yes, adult content since the porn industry are often the pioneers of new technology). There are reasons why I don't personally care for long-form content which I will touch on shortly.

There are performance considerations. Some VR games will probably benefit from faster refresh rates than others. I think Alyx around 80 fps is okay. The Rift S doesn't have the highest resolution and in some situations the "screen door" effect is more noticeable. When you are interacting more, this is less of a distraction.

I have tired old eyes that let some things slide but I think 4000p resolution at 120Hz refresh will really make VR more enjoyable for the masses. We're not at that performance level at consumer price points quite yet.

One thing for sure, I don't like wearing the VR headset for more than 45-60 minutes at one stretch. That's partially a personal thing: I also loathe wearing headphones.

I also found myself getting dehydrated after 30 minutes. When you are gaming in front of a monitor or TV screen, it's easy enough to pick up a beverage and take a sip when you're thirsty. Difficult to do with a VR headset on. Use toilet first, mute phone, etc.

totally worth it. The Rift S is still a great headset. The Quest 2 is better but the Rift S rocks. You'll have fun with it.

/edit I see some of you like the S over the quest 2. For me, the Q2 is by far the best one yet from Oculus. Visually superior, true wireless, and once the headband is replaced, super comfy. The ability to play anything off the PC makes it a no-brainer for me. I'll never put the Rift S on again!

I like the Quest 2 better, but I have been using the Rift S lately for PCVR. I have made a lot of upgrades for my Quest 2. I agree the Quest 2 is by far the better HMD without a doubt, but if someone can pick up a Rift S cheap I say go for it only if you can't swing the Quest 2 price. I'd pick up the Quest 2 over the Rift S just for Youtube VR.. lol I'm kind of torn on both for PCVR. On one hand the Quest 2 is much better for comfort and no wires, but for no artifacts in textures it goes to RIft S and when I say artifacts I mean very few. Also Rift S again for not having to worry about battery life. Well that's not really an issue for me because I've added a backup battery but that does add to the weight. The software for the Quest 2 is much better as well with all of the updates. The Rift S suffered from not getting any updates. But over all I do agree with you. :toast:

sell them, too!
Lol, they are collectors items bro. Plus he collected a complete set. Think of the nostalgia factor over the years! He couldn’t possibly part with them :)

Edit:

Gott’a catch them all, Pokemon!!!

I have tried 3 different VR headsets now, and all 3 just seem to "blurry" in graphics still, I am so used to high rez stuff, its just jarring going back to such a lower rez.

I'm really really hopeful the PS5VR2 late this year or early next year is the winner for me though.. I intend to buy that one regardless on launch day. I use Gamefly to rent physical games in USA, so it doesn't cost me anything but the $20 a month subscription fee, but its worth it to me, two games out at a time, unlimited rentals, and they ship the next game in my que as soon as the tracking reads the previous game was shipped back.

It's a great business model, shame other countries don't do it. I love Gamefly, saves me a ton of money. @ir_cow something to note next time you get the urge to try a new game. lol

Which HMD's did you try? Any new HMD like Quest 2 or Index should not be blurry unless you have it setup wrong or using a low end pc using low end settings. Have you tired Half-Life Alyx? The graphics in Alyx are so good. I do how ever agree that right now if you don't want a quest 2 then waiting on the PSVR 2 is your best option. Also, don't forget to fill out your system specs.
