Maybe contact HP, you might be able to buy new PSU from them if the rest of the system is still worth it.

It's probably all HP proprietary.

It has been fine up to this point. What are those white blobs in it?
this is a step to fair doing this mod putting a normal psu in there.Surely those blobs should not be there.
Is that any better

From Raijintek Ernis 550B PSU review:

Those white blobs are suppose to be there.

And don't call me Shirley.

i still carnt see anything wrong, you might want to look at traces on the bottom of the PCB, But be careful because that big black cap can hold a lot of charge bud.

They look a mess. anyway. o_O i could smell burning in the PSU, and there was no light on in the PC or fans going just that nasty burning smell :(The PSU has definitely gone.:(I take it i can,t put the motherboard in another case?

I am sorry i am no David Bailey :(David Royston Bailey CBE (born 2 January 1938) is an English photographer and director, most widely known for his fashion photography

you can do any think given time any money but you have to source a psu which will work with your motherboard im not read up on your board and some HP m/b have different connections to normal PSUs.
ps have you looked at your motherboard for burn bits.

You have to consider that the PSU that smells like burned may have taken something else with it, before spending money on a new PSU, especially from HP as it would probably be expensive. If it took the motherboard for example and that is a proprietary one you may have a hard time finding a replacement.
Can't you get someone to lend you a PSU to try things out? assuming it doesn't have weird proprietary connections

Yes they can. You should get a bug filter like this for your psu. Or a plastic one like dust filter used with fans:

To save your PSU from popping, get a cable like this, it has a built-in fuse. You must replace the fuse with lowers amps. These cables usually come with 10amp which is too high to protect your PSU. 10amp is meant to save rice cookers; your PSU needs 3 amps (If you're on 220v grid) ~depends on the psu wattage, is HPZ230 400w?

Thats what i was thinking that it could have taken other stuff out.I get your point about HP. :( Yes it has to be a proprietary one.,same as the PSU leg.that would cost ab arm and leg.And getting one off eBay could be hit and miss I do have a Dell Psu but would have to get an adapter for it

PSUs are very sacrificing, means they kill themselves to protect everything else. Hopefully rest of your system is fine

i would say try the adapter

eBay does have good buyer protection but you lose a lot of time, buying, it arriving, if it's bad complaining, eventually getting your money back.

That's a very good sign. If fans and lights didn't go on, it's highly likely that PSU died to save everyone else

I have just looked this one is 5amp .Thats what i thought if something goes wrong it is just the fuse that goes.I have loads of leads like all of us.But never checked on what fuse was in there.Yes it is.Plus the you have to mod the case to put a normal PSU in there. fact i am not to keen on doing that.
Thanks for your help.:)I saw a couple of those nasty bugs in the PSU but no burnt ones. there so fast :( I do have a cockroach problem here sad to say.:(There hard to get rid of them.:(Anyone got any ideas on that?o_O

Yes i will get an adapter :) If it does work with the PSU i suppose will have to get a normal PSU and do that mod.It could be dodge getting a second hand one the same as the one i have.If HP did still have a new one it would be far to exspncive.Plus the fact it does not have a power switch on it.

I hope so thanks. :)I will check the other leads I have got. I checked on the net and saw I must get the Fast Acting Quick Blow Glass Fuse Fuses which I have ordered from eBay at £2.29 cheap as chips. :)I have looked for the adapter on there and Amazon seems there not cheap:(It will be a bugger to fit the PSU in.:(

eBay is good from a buyer's point of view, But the opposite is true if you are a seller. from what I have heard. I have never sold on there though. :(

I just looked on eBay and saw a PSU for my HPZ230 MT HP Z230 WORKSTATION TOWER POWER SUPPLY PSU 400W 705045-001 he just says
Seller refurbished Seller refurbished
“Desktop PSU. Please message me if you require pictures or further information!
£24 . Of course, it is still touch and go to know how long that will last. Or going for the one I showed on here for £70 make an offer. :)If everything is ok when I try the Dell PSU with the adapter, I will probably take a chance on the PSU. There are quite a few on there. Some of them say it is an ATX one which it isn't,:)

Are there any advantages to the consumer for having proprietary PSU's?

I have a 12V HP supply and the mother board controls the power supply fan

That given, I would still prefer non-proprietary

None at all, and not only PSU,s it's all the other proprietary stuff in their PC,s.HP and Dell have. But i don,t know of any DELL MT Desktops that don,t take a normal PSU without having to do a hack a job to get it in.:(I would have liked to put the motherboard in an ATX case but it's not possible.:(I found this modal a couple of months it turns on but have not gotten around to doing any further tests on it. I have been told on here it is possible to put it in another case.

Don,t we all? o_OIs that an SFF model?

No, the larger model

I recapped the power supplies pre-emptively so they should last (I actually have two such PCs)

Is that your stove under the PSU? o_O Eww. Now wonder you got a bug problem, lol.

Clean your rooms, let no food standing around, set up bug traps, seal all entrances & smoke all cracks out. I've never seen in my life a cockroach or a wild rat. That's usually only a problem in big cities where they don't propper dispose food & trash.

i would say try the adapter

It's proprietary, so even if the (Chinese?) adapter fits you don't know if the PSU fits in the case & if the power on each lane/pin is the same.
Would totally avoid that. Best bet would be to get a used PSU from eBay. :)

You can also check if there is a soldered on fuse, replace it & try if it works.

Funny you should say that a have heard pops like that before, and I did get one yesterday. And had it at other times. :(Unfortunately, I have had bug problems here for some time, and when it was recently really hot I had the fan on, and every so often I heard a pop from that. It must have been one of those nasty bugs getting zapped:)

It's probably all HP proprietary.
I am waiting for the adapter to use with my Dell PSU to see if there has been no damage to the motherboard.
Yes, it is sad to say :(The HP mt workstations must be the only make where you have to do a hack job to get a normal PSU in it.o_O It,s a good job I don,t need a more a more beefier PSU than the 400w one it came with, although it would be nice if I could.
I understand that some of the older HP modal workstations came with a 600w one
