Hi all

I have recently sold my 1600AF and was planning to buy the ryzen 5 5500. The 5600 is 40$ more but I question it's worth as I'm gaming at 1080p/60fps. I'm running an Rx 6600XT with a superflower 550W PSU leadex platinum and 16gbs of ram on a MSI a320m-pro-max updated to the latest bios. I'd appreciate any feedback regarding my CPU choices.

Ryzen 5 5500 is a Cezanne chip. It has 16MB instead of 32MB L3 cache compared to 5600 (Vermeer). PCI-E will also be limited to 3.0 but that shouldn't be a problem since your motherboard only supports 3.0
If you play games on medium details, the Ryzen 5 5600 will be about 20% faster. If you play on ultra details the difference will be about 10%.

I think the 5600 will be a better choice since it is more future proof due more L3 cache and PCI-E 4.0 support which can be used with a new B550 or X570 motherboard.

techspot compared the two CPUs with a rx6600xt

The Ryzen 5 5500 certainly works well, but realistically if you're on a budget yet remain a performance-minded enthusiast, this CPU should be avoided even at $140. At that price, the R5 5500 is about 20% more affordable than the 5600, and we only found it to be 14% slower under extreme conditions, but we're also talking about $40, and of course, there are other considerations such as the lack of PCIe 4.0 support.

I plan on staying with the motherboard I have now and I play most games at high settings at 1080p 60fps. Would paying the extra money be worth it in terms of maintaining 60fps with high 1%lows?

In games where you'd be CPU limited the 5600 will make a difference in both average and 1% lows. There will be games that won't be affected as their avg and 1% lows are far above your 60Hz cap.

For me, it would be better to spend the extra $40 now. Probably worth more to resell when you do your next upgrade.

I'd suggest you read the review the @dirtyferret posted. Here's one graph from the review that's essentially what you'll see with your setup.

Ok thanks guys so if I spend a little more I get more cache, higher clock speeds and stable frame rates?

Between the 5500 and 5600, the latter is a better choice for gaming. If you aren't planning to upgrade your CPU for the next few years, though, the 5700X is definitely worth considering.

Also, what is your RAM model? Games benefit from low memory latency, especially the low 1% and .1% fps.

The 5700x is way too expensive. I can stretch it for the 5600. My ram is:

G.Skill F4-3200C16D-16GVKB Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3200MHz CL16 1.35V Black Desktop Memory.

All good. Just make sure XMP is enabled and you're off to the races with your new CPU.

I hope the rumor about the 3600 AF is true. That would be a fantastic choice.

Sorry for necro this thread but I've got similar problem so I guess it'd be better to ask here :)

I've got RX 6600 / 16GB 3200Mhz CL16 / MSI B450 Tomahawk Max. I'm playing in 1920x1080@60Hz with v-sync on. If I buy Ryzen 5500 will it be enough for RX 6600 or will it bottleneck? I won't overclock but I can do some undervolting if it helps?

Thanks ;)

I think this just comes down to budget the 5600 is the safer option long term as games get more cpu demanding but if you can't stretch your budget the 5500 will suffice. I personally would grab the 5600 if I planned on keeping the system for another 2-3 years.

yes it will be "enough"
will it bottleneck
depends on the game but looking at the techspot review and seeing as you have a 60hz monitor, probably no real world bottlenecks for you although in FPS benchmarks techspot shows some bottlenecks in a few games

help for what? Cooling issues?

Although it wasn't asked, would I still get the 5600 over the 5500 if the price difference is only $40? Yes I would
