Gigabyte 4xxx videocards: what kind of rep do they have?

I had a gigabyte 1080ti that fried but only when overclocking and amazingly enough an electronics tech brought it back to life after I noted the missing/damaged parts.

What is the rep on gigabyte 4xxx videocards? Hard pass?

Their Eagle cards seem pretty decent for the money, they seem to be the MSRP card in the absence of FE cards. Mine is well put together, no coil whine and fan noise (obviously those factors depend on luck).

I don't see much point in the Gaming OC models as it seems to still be an Eagle PCB, just a bit bigger cooler and more expensive.

My 30 series TUF was physically extremely disappointing (absolutely mangled out of the box), and also had considerable coil whine, so I'll just say that there's more to cooler build quality than a metal shroud. For the 4070 Ti at least, the TUF is behind all the others for VRAM temps. That's in line with my experience with Gigabyte vs. Asus AM4 mobos, GB just has better physical build quality.

As to Asus using ball bearing fans, I'm indifferent as the Eagle cards seem easy to deshroud, and they all have fan stop anyway. Last gen TUFs were all very restrictive for deshrouding due to the metal blocking tabs everywhere.

Of course, Gigabyte RMA = jesus take the wheel, but that's a different subject, and Asus is no better.

I mean I'd personally take an MSI/ASUS/Nvidia branded one over them but their gaming oc cards are decent enough if that's all that's avail to you. The Eagle cards can be decent as well but that depends on what tier of card you are looking at.

I'm not so much talking about quality when I say I'd rather go with other brands more dealing with Gigabyte CS vs other companies has been significantly worse akin to pulling teeth to get them to do anything but YMMV.

He's asking for personal experiences, I assume.

Hi, there is a webstore in Europe (Digitec in Switzerland) who list the return rate during the legal warranty ...
Take it for what it is, it can have many biases ... don't trust it blindly, but it *could* help
Gigabyte for graphic cards is about 1,8 %
MSI 1,2 %, Asus 1,3 %, EVGA 1,7 %, XFX 1,9 %, Sapphire 2,6 %, AsRock 0,3 % etc, etc ...
link (scroll down a bit)

While I can't speak for the 40 series but my TuF 3060 Ti does not have any of those issues and this is a second hand card even.
No coil whine and the fans are also still in perfectly good condition. 'card is pretty much silent up until ~1700 rpm or so but it never really reaches that point after I've repasted it'

if u are in the usa gigabyte have a 3 year warranty for their gpus, if it gives you a peace of mind..

Not abd from where I sit, some say that Gigabyte are meh and never again etc, but I've had many Giga cards over the years and nothing stands out as a particular reason to avoid them from my experience.

I'm glad......? Thread is about Gigabyte. I already said that coil whine depends on sample; I raised the point about the 3070 Ti and 4070 Ti TUF to show that metal shroud =! better in any way, despite what's often said about Eagle and other brands' plastic coolers being "cheap".

3 year warranty in Canada as well. As of late last year I think Gigabyte has a new RMA center in Canada (Ontario). Just my luck that it opened just after my RMA.

So no more cross-border shipping to City of Industry (GB's USA RMA center) + paying customs, but probably all else is the same. Last year I think I paid customs twice in my Fedex billing, because GB's incompetent staff couldn't mark the customs declaration properly, too tired to chase them over it.

I know I gave them a lot of shit over that experience, but tbh taking a look around others aren't much better.
  • Asus had similarly abysmal turnaround time and zero communication for my TUF......except unlike Gigabyte, it looks like they actually operate out of Markham ON, which just makes it sadder.
  • A few of the traditionally "good" AIBs like Powercolor and Sapphire seem to use rather shady 3rd party companies to handle Canada RMAs. Dunno if still true in 2023.
  • RIP EVGA
  • Nvidia c/o Digital River out of Denver CO had lightning fast return and cross-ship for my 2060 Super, but that was a replacement within 30 days of purchase for coil whine. No one likes Digital River, and not sure how the web store is nowadays post-COVID.
  • idk if AMD also uses Digital River, but warranty is 2 years for MBA and web store cards I think.

Haven't owned anything Gigabyte but I remember seeing some pretty ridiculous issues with their coolers, such as not having all heatpipes in contact with the GPU die and stuff like that.

no coil whine and fan noise (obviously those factors depend on luck).
Coil whine will always be there, unless the manufacturer has hot glued the inductors or something like that.

Well you brought Asus/TuF into the discussion I've only reacted to that part but fair enough.
If anything most of the cards I owned in the past were from Gigabyte tho I always made sure to not go for the bottom tier models and had gaming oc or higher.
Those I never had a problem with, imo it worths to get at least a mid tier model from any brand unless its an entry level card.

I actually almost went for an Aorus Elite card but changed my mind before buying it but the plastic vs metal shroud wasnt the reason.

All in all I would have no problem buying a Gigabyte card nowadays if its gaming oc or higher but thats more like a personal preference.

Just look up the reviews for each model yourself, the overall reputation shouldn't be too much different between the 3 major graphics card companies.

I was looking for more long-term reviews of Gigabyte 4xxx products, not a couple hour review.

I have a Gigabyte 2070S windforce. It's been solid. No coil whine, OC's to 2100, undervolts nicely too. I repasted it a year back and there were no other problems encountered like oily memory pads. Their mobos have been my go-to for over 15 years, and never had any RMA's with them.

Personally, my brands to avoid both mobo and graphics are Asrock and MSI. I had an "issue" RMA process with MSI in '09 where I kept telling them the PCIe slot was dead. They sent it back, I sent it back again, they sent it back... it
never got fixed. Long story short, I bought another mobo (Gigabyte, despite my budget constraints as a young person) and won't buy anything from MSI again. Asrock is so-so. The z87 board lost rear audio after 3 years. Not a huge deal, but I avoid them nonetheless.

Edit: I just recalled I did have an RMA for an Intel CPU. Best RMA ever. They sent a new one within 3-4 of them receiving the bad one.

Which card specifically are you after? 4070 Ti? 4080? 4090? Like the other brands the 4070 Ti and 4080 coolers are hilariously overbuilt so you only have to make a decision on a few things. With the 4090 is there probably enough power draw there to warrant a closer look at how good the PCB is, etc.
  • Do you like the card
  • Can you fit the card
  • How do you personally feel about potentially dealing with Gigabyte
Gigabyte puts plastic backplates on its cheaper cards, but so far it's only made an appearance on dual fan Eagles (I think), so 40 series has none of that so far.

About old Gigabyte cards, ever since 30 series and RX6000 the new Gigabyte with Eagle/Gaming OC/Aorus/Vision (Aero) is not the same as the Windforce fare of old. Just like modern Asus TUF/Strix is not at all comparable to Asus of the DirectCU days.

You want long term reviews of the nvidia 40 series GPUs that just came out about 4 months ago?

Has anyone had any experience with a 4xxx videocard beyond the few hours a reviewer has with it?
