TPU's WCG/BOINC Team

Still very much waiting and considering they aren't able to or don't work over the weekends, it kinda sucks.... hard... :(

Getting the feeling that upper management of that organization took it on for the press/marketing without any budget or sense of what it took to successfully run a project this large. Then tossed the work on the todo list of an underpaid/overworked tech and said "figure it out"

Awhile. Diagnostics, repair, validation, testing... The last two are probably the biggest timesinks, particularly for what looks to be an extremely under-resourced department.

dropped in to say im still alive miss you all

I've been having too many performance issues with WCG anyway. None of my systems can be dedicated crunchers anymore, and WCG has been causing lag somehow on each system. From everything to stuttery video playback to laggy servers...

Well, there' some movement going forward but how much I'm unsure. Hopefully with their updates, things are on the up and up :)

WCG Update

It'll be nice to get back to it but I'm not sure if its going to be such a rush to the servers they might have some more problems... Here's hoping they don't :)

I did something last night I haven't done since around 2009, I shut my computer down. I have been leaving it running in hopes that WCG/BOINC would start working again, but alas I give up. Yes, I know I can work on other projects or fold, just frustrated at this point and taking a break.

I believe that's how a lot of people are feeling at the moment @HammerON .... :(

Seeing some movement from folks in that WCG thread you posted Phil... some work units have uploaded and/or reported. Pretty sure with the monstrous backlog it may take awhile for everything to get in. A slight ray of hope maybe?

I'd love to hope so to Norton, I mean, its been going on long enough and I do wonder what sort of brief Krembil had when they took over this project. I mean, they aren't the size of IBM are they?? I have one outstanding WCG unit to go back but its still pending. I'm curious with when it does open up, what sort of 'flood defence' they will have to limit the crazy that they will be having to deal with, with everyone trying to return or download some new work....

Looks like we're finally getting close to lighting this candle (good info in the links to posts on the WCG forum- see below)

They expect to be taking in the completed work Monday-ish and once they have those and evaluate they may be ready to send out fresh work.

The hardware they picked up needs to be paid for by the end of the year ($57k CAD) and they have received just over $2k in donations.

Once this is all back up and running and we have some organization and transparency into how the funding is being done I personally will have no problem knocking on doors, holding funding drives, whatever is needed but they're not really there yet imo.

I will give Dr Jurisica credit as it appears as if he is stepping out into this issue and addressing it (more than he was previously).

Creeping a little closer.....

March 27, 2023 update

Data transfer to new storage system
We have started transferring all data from the recovery storage unit to our new storage system on Friday. Based on the current rate of transfer, we expect to have all data transferred/verified later this week. We will then download all processed WUs, after which we can resume sending work units to volunteers. We plan to start with MCM and OPN/OPNG; followed by ARP and then the new SCC work units.

In the meantime, we have confirmed that our daily database backups for BOINC and for the website/forums are working. The databases have been recovered and transferred to the new, faster storage already. Incremental backup to tape archive has been implemented on the new storage.

Maybe we might get there in a few days/weeks but hopefully not months.... :)

The server is accepting finished work now. Managed to get 6 new Opn1 work units a few minutes ago. The server is probably getting hammered by everyone right now so it may take awhile to get enough work to keep us crunching.

My transfer queue is empty, at least. Progress!

I feel so empty.

All my finished work has uploaded. I'm running jobs on all open cores, and a bunch are cued for downloading. In other works, all loks normal for me. :)

Picked up a bunch of MCM units just now. The project did back off a couple of times, but everything finished downloading.
Have a bunch of OPN jobs running on my Ryzen 1700 and 5950X rigs
