Hi, Everyone!

First time posting here. I'm looking into my specs after having seen starfield's recommended specs. The games i usually play run fine, but i think it's about time for an upgrade to keep up. I'm having a hard time deciding which gpu to upgrade to. I currently have a 2070, would've loved to go over to a 4070, but it seems the 40-series is quiet subpar with performance-price ratio. If starfield didn't reccomend better gpu, I would probably stick with my 2070 and wait for next gen, hopefully nvidia is more viable then when it comes to prices.

My spec:

gpu: MSI 2070 armor (i believe this is 8gb)
cpu: i9-9900K, 3.6GHz
16 gb ram
Psu: Corsair TX750M
motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z390-F Gaming

Any advice for upgrades? I'm thinking upgrade to 32 gb is the big one, then maybe a GPU?

Thank you in advance!

New Nvidia GPU's probably in 2025, or maybe 4xxx Supers in 2024...

I'm still using my 2070 Super @ 1440p G-Sync.

System memory is cheap these days so you could buy a 32GB kit.

Only issue for me rn is the 2070 playing starfield might be rough...

Minimum requirements to play Starfield on PC
  • OS: Windows 10 version 22H2 (10.0.19045)
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, Intel Core i7-6800K.
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM.
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 5700, NVIDIA GeForce 1070 Ti.
  • DirectX: Version 12.
  • Storage: 125 GB available space.
  • Additional Notes: SSD Required.

You should be fine for a while if maybe not ultra settings and not 4K.

I would probably play in 1440p, however -. we do not know as of yet if these min req. are for 30 fps, in 720p or 1080p. i'd like to be atleast 60fps in 1440p.

You sould go for an rx 67xx.
They're cheap compared to competition an you could get a powercolor fighter model for cheaper than other models.
You would even get starfield with the card as an amd gift
And for the ram upgrade it's not necessary but a nice to have

100% what I came to say.

6700XT is an absolute no brainer. 1.4x the performance of the 2070 @1440p while having 1.5x the vram. Starfield is included like you said with the current AMD promotion. Very cost effective as well (in the USA for example selling your 2070 and then buying a 6700XT would probably only cost you out of pocket with tax not much more than $200).

$200-220 out of pocket for starfield, 1.4x the performance, and 1.5x the vram is a damn good value and buys you time for the future GPU cards to get a little more cost effective (especially on the Nvidia side of things)

For me without the cost of strafield it was €280 for the powercolor model on sales

Well if you plan on going DDR5 in next year or two there's no need to get another 16GB, it would help but not a lot unless you need it for specific applications. The next upgrade, AMD or Intel, would be massive so probably you'd rather save for that.

Thanks for the feedback. Only thing that kinda fks me, i’m a nvidia simp :((

Though the cooler is garbage in the Fighter model. Had to put an aftermarket cooler to my 6700 XT Fighter as it was just so bad.

Exactly that, if you plan on upgrading your platform to DDR5 then stay with 16GB or try to find a second hand one if you really want/need too.
As for the GPU, the 2070 should run it decently, not on max settings ofc. We don't have any benchmark so it's really hard to tell right now how well the 2070 will runt it. If you really don't want to wait month before playing starfield with better graphics setting, then the cheapest options as mentionned is the RX 67XX series. If you want a brand new GPU, then don't wait too much because RX67XX (and RDNA2 generaly) are running out of stock more quickly recently (for France i'm sure but i belive i've heard it's the same in more country). If you're not scared of second hand, you have more time to make up your mind, and more choice on the green side.

Personnaly, I would wait for the game to launch and watch some benchmark to see what the 2070 is up to and see if the game is good and not full of bugthesda :D and then choose if upgrade is worth it or not. If an upgrade is needed then see what option are available.
Maybe AMD will finally release the rest of the RX 7000 lineup if they are not that dumb enough.
Maybe price will go a bit down since this generation (AMD and Nvidia) are underwhelming.

d4 being so dirt cheap these days make the 32gb upgrade kind of a nobrainer tbh
(well, depending on your speed/cas target it, the op didn't mention their current kit's so theres that)

Thank you all for this feedback! Think I might just hodl on thight and wait to see how my 2070 performs and then maybe just go for a full new setup in 2025 with the 50-series.

100% go for 32GB. Not sure where you are from (hint: you can edit that in your forum profile or your post) but the prices of DDR4 have plummeted to the point where there really isn't any good reason to hold back. Even if you are intending to move to DDR5 soon-ish, an extra 16GB will be such a small cost that it absolutely justifies itself.

GPU prices are nonsensical, NVIDIA more so than AMD. I'd honestly wait and see how Starfield performs on your 2070 before deciding whether to make a switch; it's a Bethesda game and those have never been particularly GPU-intensive. AMD is maybe probably possibly going to launch the 7700 and 7800 series later this year which would put pressure on 4070 prices so that could offer an upgrade path, but right now I wouldn't drop cash on a NVIDIA GPU unless you like the feeling of being ripped off. AMD 6700/XT/6800/XT are very solid options at good price points and there's also the possibility of getting the game free, but they're not going to be a massive upgrade from your 2070.

Thanks for the feedback.

I live in Norway. Think i’ll do that. Already bought the game as i had some cash in my steam wallet. I’ll see how timelines and patience plays out haha. But deffo eana go up to DDR5 at my next upgrade. And my setup seems to be a gen behind, in terms of motherboard and all.

might just do the 32gb ram and maybe a ssd which i’ll use on this setup and my next. My current ssd (512gb) is full. And do need ssd for starfield.

Your 2070 will be fine for Starfield unless you plan to really crank up the settings.

I don't know if Starfield will support DLSS, but I'm pretty sure it'll have FSR 2, so you shouldn't worry too much about performance.
The only "resonable" nVidia upgrade would be a RTX 4070. Maybe even a 4060 Ti with 16 GB if prices collapse.

AMD 7900xtx, getting mine today…

I upgraded my entire PC in anticipation of Starfield, I know what you mean. The 7900 XTX or the 4080 are great picks for that game, if you wanna go all out with it.... otherwise grab a 7900 XT, cheers

Isn't Starfield 30fps max due to its engine? Or does that only apply to Series S and X?

It's 30 fps on console only, they probably set the graphics too high at the cost of frame rate

You don't mention how your RAM is divided or current drive (SATA/NVMe). Expected length before fully upgrading system will likely determine the best course of action. That and current pricing in Norway.

2x8GB(?) RAM might be the less important upgrade if you consider the fairly broadly repeated statement here on gpu performance gains with 2xxx and 3xxx moving from 8th/9th gen Intel to 13th/-. I would also consider divide between NVMe with DRAM or not, which are both available currently, solely based upon use with new or future hardware. I think a new processor and mobo better match with your desires than further investment in current system. Unless you will be keeping it as a second system.

That is an amazing PC no need to upgrade. Except the PSU - no way the consumption would exceed 400watt.

If you must - just purchase the GPU first and nvme drive. My RTX A2000 which is a 3000 series card run fine with a z87 4670K so did the kingston nv2 nvme in an adapter in pcie slot at a full speed - yours will have absolutely no problems.

Upgrade the display. What display you use?

Also you can upgrade cooling and/or case which can be reused with the new cpu+mobo+ram combo. You can sell the old parts as you go or sell the whole working old pc at the end.

I wouldn't invest a penny in DDR4 if you already have 16g.

Maybe shoot for a 3070Ti or 3080, but it's really not a great time to upgrade.
Go for 32GB of RAM if you can find a good price, but it will still be DDR4 and when you do the real upgrade, you'll have to replace RAM again.
