Hey, if you have some old GPU, why not bring them out of the closet and see what the performance is today?
It's not a competition, more a rediscovery! Maybe we'll discover some gems, inexpensive and still capable! Or just the opposite!
You still use an old GPU every day, give us your feedback!

All cards are welcome, AGP, PCI, PCIe, ....
From 2013 or before !

Post any bench or game you want in the quality you want !

Some free bench if you want (thx @damric) :

I've tested an GTS 250 and a GTX 470, and I was pleasantly surprised !

I already posted about my trusty HD7970 in your other GPU thread :)
I use it regularly on my main Win7 machine to play older games. Right now I'm playing a 2004 title @ 1440p with forced 8xEQ MSAA (16x effective)... with the card underclocked to its minimum 300/150 clocks!
This 2012 GPU can still hold its own in many games. My Asus card has even retained most of its OC potential. It used to do 1150/1750 without errors, now it's 1135/1650.

I mostly play older games (Portal/2, BF4, etc.) that can use SLI, so it works just fine. No OC as there's cooling limitations sadly.

Yes I remember !
Underclocked so you don't have too much fps and don't break the game or something like that ou juste for "emulate" old HW ?

Works great today.

Damn I've dream about this card when I was building my first gaming PC...
I would love to have one today, but they are still expensive (100e) for just some series of bench then resting on a shelf !

Do you play modern games too with only one GPU enabled ?

I have in possession some older GPU's here:HD 6850,HD 6950,Nvidia GT 640 and also some Matrox cards(I love those)P690,M9120,Xenia...'tho those Matrox cards are mostly just 2d capable but even with them it's possible to play some older titles in 3d(Half Life 2 for example).....Anyway I recently was in process of changing my main GPU and in that time I was using HD 6950 for a week or so and to be honest it was OK experience my desktop was running in 1440p(60hz) I could go on 4k but then only 30hz....Tried to play some games and yeah some of them was working Okish games like War Thunder and Panzer Corps 2 did good in 1080p/DX11.....So to cut the chase older cards could be still usable in some situations like playing older games, building retro machine and so on.....or they can still look fun on the shelves as decorations :D.....

Civ 6? I don't do much gaming. I more enjoy tinkering and the GTX 690 is a fun card for that.

Until next week my 1100T and 7970 is still my main setup.

it can’t play new new games, but The Witcher 3 with most high settings at 1080 DX11 still ran fine and looked amazing, it works in DX12 but crashes and it’s slow as shitits going to be interesting to see it in 4K ultra settings with Ray tracing. Same for a shit ton of mods for Skyrim that brought my lack of Vmem 7979 to its knees in many areas, pulling 20ish FPS unless I turned down the settings.

I’m honestly not as excited about Ray tracing as I am mods and stupid powerful performance at 4K. Once I get the new one setup I will run some side by side benchmarks.

My old ass system has proven that a well optimized system can last.

I'm running it underclocked to reduce its power consumption and related heat. Temperatures are not a problem, since I've got a huge aftermarket cooler on it (Prolimatech MK-26 with 2x 140mm fans). I game at 60fps and in this particular title the HD7970 can hold it even with minimum clocks.

I have a 5870 from my mom's old work PC. I got the card when she retired her work PC about 3 years ago.
It can do 1045MHz on the core and 1287 on the memory with voltage cranked up in Afterburner. The only real downsides of it are the 1GB VRAM limitation and the loud blower fan.

Pulled out the beastly 8800 Ultra for a bit of messing around, still does the job although it's one hot card compared to my GTX's reaching over 90c @ 100% fan.

Dirt 3: DX9 1080p Medium 0xAA
Avg: 57.0FPS Min: 47.5FPS

AvP 2010: "DX11" 1080p Very High (Survivor, C-Block)
~40-60FPS

Heaven: "DX11" 1080p Low Tess off (Same as OP)
1045pts / 41.5FPS

I don’t keep any hardware but 10 years ago, I had either a 6950 or a 7970Ghz ed. I don’t remember exactly when I upgraded to the latter but most likely I had the 7970 while after a couple of months I bought a second one for crossfire.

You'll need the basic system specs included in the charts too, because a GT710 is going to run a lot smoother on my 5800x3D than a pentium 4
Let's see if a 750Ti starts up with my 3090's drivers, this could be stupid.

Note 1: 750Ti does not like 4k 60hz, although it gets a pass for working.

Wouldya look at that, this cheapass 750Ti 2GB GDDR5 is a legendary GPU

Of course 3Dmark isn't 3DMark without contradicting itself constantly - that legendary performance is of course the bottom 6%
No one else has tried with a 5800x3D, it seems

My HD7970 with a custom heatsink from prolimatech is collecting dust in my wardrobe... lots of good hours with this gpu and bf3 mp

Nothing more obsolete than RX 480 and GTX 1060 in my current disposal. Still waiting for my buddy to bring me my HD 6850 I left at his place.

For some reason, RX 480 is substantially better than GTX 1060 in Cyberpunk 2077 (29.5 FPS VS 21.5 FPS on the same settings, RX 480 at stock clocks and GTX 1060 is running at high 1900s with stock VRAM) but handles Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 worse at 4K (33 FPS VS 48 FPS). That GTX 1060 is a 3 GB version.

My daily driver system is an ancient relic that does all I need it to do, and the GPU is an 11 year old Firepro W7000 (basically a 4GB HD 7870) I paid $30 dollars for. I BIOS modded GPU with a 50MHz GPU overclock, a 100MHz memory underclock (this card has Elpida GDDR5 which seems to be a reliability weak spot on these, hence the downclock) and under-volted from 1.120V to 1.0V! I also modified tha fan curve. Running the 3rd party Amernime drivers which work fantastic.

I game on a 32" Samsung 1366x768 TV and I use the Radeon frame limiter to game at 30FPS, so card runs at 60 degrees C while in games. I play alot of stuff on this system (mostly older games) and the performance is awesome for what little I have in it. Quite frankly I have no desire to get anything newer, gonna run this until it dies LOL.

Here are some screen captures from Far Cry 6 and Cyberpunk 2077 built in benchmarks, in game performance is better then the benchmarks indicate and they play at a smooth 30FPS.

Great thread by the way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GPUs of that era traded blows a lot, sometimes due to game engine BS where things were heavily biased because they were simply never tested on anything but a few GPU's the devs had on hand.
Console games might have simply been ported over, got a tick that they ran at 30FPS on PC and never tuned in at all.
Like how Crysis 1 or 2 used Tesselation on objects entirely hidden off-screen under the ground, but had an occlusion system for Nvidia that fixed their FPS issues while breaking it for ATI and Intel IGPs.
Look at how the OpenGL performance on AMD cards got skyrocketed once they worked around a Microsoft problem (The newer driver with the fix required an update from Microsoft to work, leading to ~110% improvements in some setups)

Try DXVK, you may find some stupid performance gains on both Nvidia and AMD GPUs, with AMD having the greater chance of bigger gains

I'm guessing it's not gonna help me because all games I play are either DX12 or already having 5 million FPS performance rates.

Maybe later i can try to test if these things in my storage room work heh, i only usually use em to troubleshoot video issues/boot issues but for sure the 8800 GTS 320MB (covered, behind the small GTX 660) is dead
Not pictured is the sapphire Radeon HD 6850, it's way below the storage area, can't be bothered to dig it up

This thread makes me wana play with all my old GPU's. Sadly, I don't have much time these days being a business owner, married and with kids :( Got some pics for ya though : )

What an amazing collection, wow

:toast:

Still a few cards on my hit list. Namely 295X2 and some older nvidia cards like 7950 GT's which I used to run in SLI with a E6600 Core 2 : ) Hard to find them boxed though with matching serials.

I've used a ryzen 5500 with 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz and a Samsung SSD 870 1TB.
I don't have an old PC, but like that I can see all the power it have !

Damn that poor GTX 750Ti ... It wasn't ready for that type of bench!
But still amazed by what it can do ! A friend of mine still used it in 2021, then I got him a 1070 and it was like day and night for him ! But he played like every games with us !

Wow really nice with a lot of boxes too !
I'm so sad you can't test some ! I have a GTX 590 but it's probably dead, so if one day you have some time I'll be curious to see one in action !

That's a nice build you have there with the xeon ! An all "pro" pc converted to a gaming one !
Feels like it would be a good pc for a PS1 / PS2 and other old console emulation ?

The only test I have saved it's from 3D Mark Fire Strike because Time Spy it's NO-GO as card does not support DX 12.....

6950hdFireStrike.png

And Yeah I did modded this 6950 a little bit with my custom bios......Also I unlocked the card shaders so it's basically the same as 6970 with slightly lower clocks and with just 1 GB of ram.....
