Starfield discussion thread

Has anyone built their own ship from scratch yet? I wanna give it a go but some of the delivered ships are already very nice... I guess I want to build a giant frigate and just go blasting everyone out of orbit.

I had a quick look but it looks a bit too complicated for me

Gotta turn off the piss filter or my eyes start to boil. The game keeps me active for an hour or two then I have to do something else. Definitely not terrible but again I wished there was a setting for the piss filter. (Also HDR does suck in this game.) Other than that the movement/gunplay isn't great but workable.

In all honestly, those are my main gripes. With the neutral LUT mod, it looks pretty dang amazing and I love the ship-building aspect!

This is useful info:
Starfield is not intended to be played at native resolution, so you should set Render Resolution to less than 100%. Bethesda expect you to turn FSR 2 on while playing, and it does a decent job of upscaling without making the game look too bland. This is also why the highest graphics preset also sets Render Resolution to 75%.
and
The most performance-intensive graphics settings in Starfield are Shadow Quality, Volumetric Lighting, GTAO Quality, and Contact Shadows. Turn these down if you’re not happy with the framerate you’re getting. Motion Blur also has an impact on performance, so disable it if you don’t like the effect.
Most of you probably know this already anyway, but I didn't do I'm going to muck around with my settings because at times the game is dipping down to 30-40 fps.

Started playing this game a couple days ago. At first I thought my 8700K, GTX 1080, 32GB RAM rig was running it better than expected when I was able to average 45 FPS at 1080p with Low to Med settings, but it turns out unfortunately that is not good enough. Any outdoor firefights usually result in a feeling of lag. Dog fights are also difficult due to the lag. I made the mistake of accepting a side activity mission on Altair, only for it to end up with me having to attack two Spacer bases with several foes each. The task was too much for the Frontier, so I decided to stash the contraband case of bio organs I found (worth 13,500), and work on a way to smuggle them, which is quite a task in itself I'm finding. So instead I took on the Crimson Fleet undercover quest line, as I'd read you get a pretty good ship for completing it. I was wishing instead I had a way to steal the 137,000 credit Sunsail ship I escorted a stranded person too, but I didn't have the skill level, and I'm quite sure since it was probably registered to him, I'd have had to jump through hoops just to dock it legally.

Really not liking the game so far, it seems poorly optimized and not well structured quest wise as far as sensible progression. You shouldn't even be able to take quests for which you're way under equipped, it should at least give you a warning. So far I see this game as a lot of wasted time, especially the pathetic weight limit that makes it a walking simulator.

I heard that there was a mod to remove that grainy filter crap they use in the game. I haven't looked into it since I haven't played and couldn't even get the game to download for me (stupid MS gamepass servers suck ass). Might be something worth looking into.

It's crazy how demanding the game is. I was walking around Neon and noticed my CPU usage was almost 100%. I do have HT and 8 ecores disabled, which tends to be the best performance in most games, but I haven't tested this one.

I was getting 110-120 fps with DLSS at 67% in 4k max settings (4090). Close to holding the 117 fps limit I have set (LG C1 monitor).

I have never seen a Game use all cores.

Horizon Zero Dawn and Shadow of the Tomb Raider will use 100% of your CPU in busy areas if you have surplus GPU performance. And not just touch 100%, they peg there. I appreciate that these games can scale properly and use all of a limited resource when necessary. Starfield on the same machine (4c8t i7-4790) can touch 100%, saw it a few times in New Atlantis, but is generally in the 75-85% usage range with well below 100% GPU usage, so that seems the average CPU utilization limit of the game engine, at least with 8 threads.

Downloaded it last night on Game Pass (XBX), I'll try it out at 30fps on the big screen.
Not even going to bother with it on PC until it gets DLSS support (can't mod that in w/ Xbox app AFAIK)

Bloomberg audience Q: Why did you not optimize Starfield for PC?
Todd Howard: We did... you might need to upgrade your PC

As someone who recently did....cute Todd, very cute.

Performance is only ok at 4k on a 4090..... Can't imagine on anything lower lol. I could turn down settings but then my CPU is like I'm le tired....

Someone built an X-Wing looked pretty cool.

I recommend doing the Space pirate mission. You have a lot of options to back stab and do horrible things.

do you by any chance remember to exact name of this mission? I am going to look up its starting point :D

i don't because i was in the middle of the main mission during a pivotal part where i go back to the lodge and i get intercepted by UC security. They force me to basically go work for the pirates...

I don't have the name off the top of my head, but I can check later when I can get to my PC.

Essentially, if you have contraband on your ship and are scanned when headed back to New Atlantis, you'll get escorted somewhere and that starts the quest.

I'm using a fcking threadripper here and can't get past the tutorial due to 100% CPU usage and all the stuttering lmfao

Feed it steroids.

You totally can mod DLSS into the Xbox gamepass version. I did, works fine.

Well that's good news, I thought MS locked down all the game files etc.
Did you need to do anything special for it or just go to manage local files in the app etc?

no stuttering at all here, not even in the big cities, my fps just goes horribly slow there and its not near as fun as being out in the world.

my system specs are under my name, and here are my in-game settings: also side note: i get 160 fps at 1440p in lots of areas, like when I did the mission last night to get my new ship, corridors, buidlings, etc and some planets are just optimized better. its only in cities where it will dip to 100-120 fps, and in big cities like new atlanties to a crippling 50-70 fps (and the world looks extremely blurry when this happens) so hopefully amd will come out with fsr3 frame generation someday. but if not its no sweat off my balls, im having fun

vsync is off cause i use rivatuner to frame at 160

here i am getting 160 fps for example and it still looks beautiful even with my lower settings.

only thing that really makes me sad about this game is it's not a proper space sim, so I can have a fleet of ships which is cool and all, but its not like other space games where I can have all my fleet with me flying at the same time, by AI and I could fast travel between each ship at will, that would truly be the icing on the cake for me for this game, maybe a mod will come along that does that, but I doubt it, that's some heavy coding right there. although even older games like EVE Online have had this for decade+, but I guess that's just not what this game is about, so no big deal, but it would be cool having some epic space battles.
I'm sorry but... looks beautiful? Are my eyes deceiving me? The character model has detail, but that environment bro. Its like we're back in 2005.

Don't worry, as the game progresses and you get better ships and stuff it gets better. I suck at space combat too, I know exactly what you mean. You can still make it fun in this game though, lot of flexibility in how you approach things unlike other space games, for example, you can turn down all power except one or two slots of power to your engine to gain stealth mode in any ship. It's very slow moving of course, but it works when you in a bind. :)

I started a new character to play around with console commands (it won't overwrite my main save where I am using no console commands, I explained that several posts ago how to do it), graphics look fucking amazing. Getting 150 fps here. Have fun everyone!
If you look a bit longer you'll see that half the objects in the scene don't cast shadows, there is only ambient occlusion and perhaps one or two point lights.

running into it since launch ... 0 issues 0 crashes (some bugs but more of the "funny" kind rather than the game breaking kind) ... borderless 1620p mostly ultra FSR2 settings
as with Skyrim i avoid the main quest and concentrate on side content, sandboxing and having fun farming like a madman while waiting on "improvement" popping on Nexus
freaking hilarious how nice it run on a R5 3600 (given that it is more CPU intensive than GPU ) did not check the fps but it does feel smooth enough anywhere o_O

the game feel awesome for me, space fight is, well i can see why people find it a bit sluggish but ... playing it with a controller in space and M/KB for open world is fine for me
planets are barren, well yeah ... it maybe sci fi but it's still set in a realistic environment ...

running my Class C D.re[a]dnought (heavily modified Class B Shieldbreaker) a neat 6k+ cargo hold, dual laser, dual railgun, triple missile monster

WTF moment when i entered photo mode and i realized the whole interior and NPC are rendered and move around .. from the outside porthole are golden but transparent from the inside (only the cockpit is clear from the outside ) when in space (yeah i took the adoring fan trait ... just too hilarious )

well another game where i could do a "lookalike me" although the lack of long goatee beard is disturbing ... and i don't want to use the full beard ... (c'mon nexus ... do it! )
Photo_2023-09-06-072928_proc.jpg

nothing too revolutionary ... but still a more than decent one, for me ... npc? well all bethgames always had potato face npcs ... (again, c'mon nexus ... better facegenmorph, pretty please? )

AMD hates this Trick.
indeed, they do... replacing hardware agnostic tech with proprietary closed one

well as long as it make Nvidia/Intel (well XeSS is also hardware agnostic if i am not mistaken ) users happy it's all fine and dandy ;)

(personal opinion but i do find FSR specially 2 quite good, so, i am fine as it is )
