Are the differences in the Graph are using the M2 on the GPU vs the MB?

No one in their right mind should buy this. But Envision a future where storage speeds have advanced to the extent that they can seamlessly function as both VRAM and RAM.
I could see this being for cheaper boards to have another M2 connected to the CPU.
 
This should've been at least 16GB VRAM for the $440. I know the MSRP of a standard 4060 Ti 16GB is $500, but even I think thats overpriced, especially when the 7800 XT exists.
 
I was hoping for an RTX 4060 Ti card that fit in an M.2 slot.
 
The best thing about this is that it's a temporary stop-gap solution for the ridiculous overheating PCIe Gen5 SSD controllers.

Obviously a better solution would be Gen5 SSD controllers that don't run on old lithography and suck down far too much power, but we're not there yet.
 
It would have been a better product if you could add 2 ssds and utilitse the full 8x 4x 4x setup that is possible.

I think something like that would be attractive to mITX users that are looking for a balanced setup for say a HTPC / Living room gaming machine while also giving ample storage capability.

I think it wouldn't necessarily work with all CPUs which is why it only comes with 1 M.2 slot. I think LGA1700 only natively supports 2 PCI-e devices from the CPU. So x8 x8 or x8 x4... no x8 x4 x4. On AM5 it could work with 2 M.2 slots.

FPS? Blue is the 4060 Ti Founders Edition, Green is the ASUS card. The M.2/SSD makes no performance difference, it's completely independent of the graphics capability
 
I am curious to know if this will make a difference when using DIrectStorage? Something to keep in mind. :)
 
a version with 2x m.2 slots would absolutely be worth it, plenty of folks with SFF dreams who just need the extra storage space without having to look at 8tb nvme drives that are still pretty high in price. Or even adapting one of those slots to provide a pcie slot to some other slim pcie device you can squeeze in there. Maybe a high speed/multiport nic or some extra high speed USBC ports?

very cool idea, makes me look at pcie 8x gpus in a better light than I used to. Used to be a shame if you had x16 lanes to that slot and you just dont get to use that extra bandwidth for anything useful until this kind of thinking comes along

No, the m.2 is connected to the cpu, like using a riser on the x16

Then why do you note it as a con that it cuts into the power budget if it makes no impact on performance? It's not really a con if you don't notice a difference. Plus, NVMe SSDs don't use that much power compared to a GPU.

I guess CPUs are that fast now that it does not matter. Thinking about it the M2 slot(s) connected to the CPU would be the exact same in performance even if the traces are longer but in truth they are not.
 
Hmm cool outside the box thinking tech, it's got spare lanes, why not make them available for a M.2 drive? I like the fact it's can scale to gen 5 too... good stuff.

For small form factor PCs this is a good way to add extra M.2 slot for any number of expansion cards. On Intel side though yes given their majority of B and H series of chipsets are castrated on feature front not to support PCI-e bifurcation.
 
now we really need an x12 mode.
imagine a 4090, running on x12 and then another x4 for the ssd ...

@W1zzard, dumb question and sorry if it was answered in your review and I missed it -- can the drive be used as a boot drive?
 
It's a sexy option on the lowest end card I would never buy. How about a 4090 or 4080 with that M.2 slot?

I'd probably store just my games on a 4TH SSD in that slot.
