Nintendo, at this point, does not have any console that can play a DVD movie, which just about every other current-generation console can do. Nintendo did plan to add a DVD player to the Wii earlier, however, they wanted to make sure they would have enough stock for the holiday rush. Nintendo also discovered that DVD software licensing fees were a lot higher than expected. Nintendo fans everywhere should be able to enjoy a Nintendo Wii with DVD playback sometime next year.

I'm glad the Wii finally catches up to PS2

Is this supposed to be a firmware upgrade for the Wii so that the current owners will be able to play DVD's

Or is this going to be a new revision of the Wii?

Shouldn't they try to add next-gen disc support? DVD seems a little old for a new console, eh? HDDVD, BluRay? NintenDVD??? haha

with DVD players available from £10 ($20) there isn't really much of a need to revise the already successful Wii console only to raise the selling cost because of the extra added value of dvd playback, i would bet if you surveyed console game players more than 95% would have or the use of a standalone dvd player.

I don't see why people want a game console to play a DVD, I mean come on, DVD players are dirt cheap these days, just go buy one.

It's so much easier, though, just to have one thing that does fifty instead of fifty things that each do one :).

Thats true I guess, still, I use my PC to play a DVD rather than my Xbox 360.

Wii

sounds sweet.... but why not put in high def or newer software for the DVD player in the WII what about putting the games in better graphics or something else to improve the game system sice there already going to put a DVD player in it!:nutkick:
