What's your latest tech purchase?

Say what?

Where's its home gonna be?

Where's its home gonna be?
In my 2nd nvme slot. Only for games.

So... an electronics swap meet, at a particle accelerator? Cool!

Lol that's not even fair. Talk about a way to spice up literally anything on a tech forum.
I wanted a Grande Macchiato, but decided on a Tall since I wasn't sure how many bathrooms were available at the PARTICLE ACCELERATOR

After a delay of 10 days (Motherboard lost in the mail), the final piece of my Aliexpress test bench arrived today.

Soyo B550M motherboard ($68USD);

Already received:
Rzyen 5 5600 ($80); AMD Wraith Stealth cooler ($7); 32gb (2x16gb) of JUHOR Desktop memory ($57); 512gb KingSpec NVMe ($33); and a new (old stock) Rosewill Quark 750 PSU ($67 - Newegg via Ebay).

Tomorrow, all of this will be installed on a " Mainboard Bracket ATX Thicker Version Open Studio Chassis Frames Holder". ($19)

Then it is time to benchmark all my "interesting" video cards.

got this chair on sale for $35. always wanted to try proper lower lumbar support. it fits the curve of my lower back perfectly and the tension on top of my spine/head has completely gone away, I feel like someone just took a pressure valve and loosened it on my body. holy fuck I wish I had got a chair like this decades ago.

I put some custom cushions on the arm rests too, cause I don't like my body resting on plastic. I am fairly happy so far with this, but its definitely cheaply made, 100% my next chair will be around 100-300 bucks, but this exact same lower lumbar support kind of design, omg its heaven...

Sure, that'a a "cheap" PC you're building here !
You've wanted it with "cheap" parts or try some "unknowns" brands ?

Yes.

Although I could have gone even lower.

A Kllisre A320m motherboard, Ryzen 5 2600, and 16gb kit of DD4 memory will be $105 (free shipping) starting on the 17th. Basically the core of a Walmart "gaming pc". An X99 CPU/Motherboard/16gb kit of DD4 memory is less than $100. Kits build around a B450/Ryzen 3600/16gb start at $135. Intel kits are around the same prices, built around 11th & 12 gen i5. Aliexpress has 2 week sales every month; if it isn't on sale, give it a week or two.

Most of these parts are sold on Amazon; I simply saved a bit of money in exchange for waiting longer for them to show up. 2 days or so on Amazon or 2 weeks for Aliexpress - although the motherboard was nearly a month since the 1st one was lost in the mail somewhere in China. They shipped a new one within 12 hours of me notifying them - customer service was impressive.

The Soyo motherboard is typical of any B550m; same power delivery system, same amount of I/O, same board layout right down to the capacitors. The brand is well known, and I saved at least $20 over what it would have cost me on Amazon. If I had ordered it on sale, it would have been half of the price on Amazon or Newegg.

A Ryzen 5 5600 is 5600. Mine was new (was expecting a used one); and I ordered the cooler separately - that saved me $30.

The KingSpec NVMe I have experience with - it was the same price as Amazon or Newegg, but adding it to my order got me a bigger discount code on my order, so I saved another couple of bucks.

The memory was a shot it the dark - at the time, it was a dollar less than a comparable kit off of Amazon or Newegg, a number of different storefronts were selling them (and had sold thousands) so why not?

The open air test bench was $19; on Amazon the exact same product is $29.

The video cards that I am testing are all "Aliexpress Specials". For the most part, they aren't sold in the west, and I found them interesting. Most are 90% new - the GPU chip is old, but the pcb & fan assembly are brand new; the others are build around a laptop gpu and turned into a discrete GPU.

It has been my observation that most budget video card reviews (either on YT or here) are pretty much useless for making buying decisions. The information is accurate; but for the most part it is useless data. Pairing a budget video card with a system that is completely maxed out otherwise isn't realistic. This test bench is more in line with what the Steam hardware survey shows.

People in this price range aren't playing their games on Ultra Settings; they aren't using raytracing; they aren't playing on 4k; they will use upscaling (if they know about it), they don't have a collection of the latest and greatest AAA games (that cost more than the entire system); and believe it or not, some people do more than play 1st person shooters and racing games.

My testing games are either free, or they have been on sale for less than $20 recently; most importantly, they are games that people are actually playing - Starfield isn't in the testing suite; Diablo Immortal is. There will be a mixture of DX9, 11, and 12 as well as Vulkan. In addition, a number of them will be less well known (this is for my Intel GPU).

I have a number of budget video cards, half bought from newegg, amazon, or ebay (for control - I had them in other systems over the years), the others are the interesting ones.

RX 480 8gb - from my Mac Pro days
RX 560 4gb - from my Mac Pro days
RX 560xt 8gb ($67) - How does the cheapest 8gb card perform in 2024?
RX 570 8gb - got me through the last mining apocalypse.
RX 580 (2084) 16gb ($100) - Does the 16gb help with Stable Diffusion? We know it doesn't help with games. Otoh, none of the tests I saw had rebar turned on.
RX 5700xt 8gb ($132) - How does RDNA 1 hold up in 2024?

GTX 1030DDR5 2gb - the testing floor, was able to replace defective fans with replacement fans from Aliexpress.
GTX 1650 4gb - only budget Nvida card under $125.
RTX 2060 Super 8gb ($164)
RTX 2060m 12gb ($157) - is this the cheapest card for Stable Diffusion? How does the lower core clocks affect both SD & games?
RTX 3060m 6gb ($130) - Can more CUDA cores compensate for half the Vram & lower core clocks?

RTX 3060 12gb ($285) - Most popular GPU on Steam hardware survey.
a770 16gb ($289) - Productivity monster; gaming - so far, so good.

I will be adding to this list with a couple more RTX 2000m & 3000m variants.

As a followup.....

Newegg is selling an almost identical system for $749. The major difference being the Newegg system has a B450 motherboard, a 550 watt psu, and a thermaltake case.

If you can work a screwdriver, you can save a LOT of money.

I'll be a little busy today, it's almost 7am here right now in my neck of the woods, I'm gonna have to do a couple of meetups later in the morning. Selling off my R9 3900X to a buyer, then off to meet the seller of the R7 5700X3D (brand new). Also got my Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO a couple of days back, and got myself a Logitech G915 + G303 Shroud Edition....and a Nothing Phone 2a 12/256GB. Will put up some pics a little later.

ok ... me too ... but since i do not own any consoles (always wanted a Switch or Switch lite ... but Made In Abysse coming to PC and acquiring a ROG Ally made that "want" subside )

soooo

HELL YEAH looking forward to it ... i am a huge fan of SMT (also a huge nostalgic of Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine which i played for quite some years ... ) SMT III: Nocturne was my fav tho ... but i suspect that one will fill that place quite fast...

i swear i told myself i would never buy an AAA at full price ever again ... but 69.90chf for the deluxe .... is actually fine ...

Here're the pics:

I actually joined the "SMT" hype quite late, I haven't played any of the previous release or the 4th entry which was on the 3DS?
My older brother started out playing Persona 3 when it came out on the PSP, which then never tried any of the SMT series.
The same with my GF but I think she started with 4 Golden on the Vita and then played Persona 5.
My first SMT game was 3 Nocturne on the switch 2 years ago, it was a humid summer and I just didn't fancy sitting playing on my PC in the office and though it was a challenge at first(the frequent random encounters was almost as bad as Enchanted arms) and fighting Lucifier unprepared left me very frustrated but I did it.
Then I bought 5 and enjoyed it a lot more as I understood the game mechanics a lot more.
I'm currently playing Canon of Creation again and the improvements from the original release is a nice change, some of the bonus items to gain essences are now shown on the minimap, which I don't think that was in the original.
The additional new demons, side quest and the Magatsu rail is a nice feature too.
The performance bump up to 60fps+ is nice too.

i started with the original Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei on SNES ... in 1995 using the universal adaptor on a jap cartridge  i was 14 at the time and well ... it was playable even without understanding moon runes .... errrr i meant Kanji  got more into it after SMT II and my favorite before SMT III Nocturne was SMT: Strange Journey on NDS

i really dig the story and character design :)

eh .... i ordered some storage boxes for my switches and i am considering to order more Flame skull : Succubus shaft (i can't help but laugh everytime i read/say that  ) and swap the Kailh box black on my Thock 75% (that's kinda a statement on how good they feel and sound ... if i use these plus the Poron pads ... i would have the most silent mech KB ever  )

1718623963016.png

also waiting on the Lofree Edge + Ether keycaps bundle ... but since it was my first time backing up a kickstarter ... i don't know how long it will take

I'm still to play SMT V on my Switch, but I know full well it'll be a rough ride for me coming from Persona (P3P/P5/P5R) and heck, TMS#FE.
If only I actually started playing it...

Been on a bit of a spree as of late. Ordered 3 rads, 2 resv, 4 blocks, tubing, tons of fittings, an Optane PCIE 900p 480gb, 120mm XSPC fans x6, and Asus z370 mb and a 8600k cpu.

Latest major purchases include a Raspberry Pi 5 8GB with an Argon40 NEO 5 M.2 NVMe case + 1TB Samsung 980 Pro. Trying to make a little desktop "sidecar" for when I just want to browse/watch youtube/check emails and such without firing up the whole desktop. Also trying to get myself more familiar with Debian and GNU/Linux in general to slowly wean myself off Windows and learning the quirks of the ARM64 arch and what it takes to optimize it is interesting too. It's a fun little side project.

not much, the Thock 75% with the Kailh box black, some Yusya Red for the 8key macropad, 12 Cherry MX Silver on the GP2040CE flatbox, the Redragon Clicky Blue, the Flame Skull Succubus and some Gateron red
so, 6 kind of switches (7 if counting the recent order ) not counting the Cherry MX Blue and Kailh Yellow, since they are in non hot swap keyb

i ordered 4 boxes for now since out of 7, 3 are used in the aforementioned kb/pads but i will probably order more boxes if i find more sweet deals on switches and the "sample pack" i order prove good and decide to order more than 10 to 35 switches

oh and btw the image of the boxes are not mine ;) they are still "on the way"
but the Gateron blue pink seen in the box are on wishlist  (iirc it's the "Melodic" clicky type ) edit: probably not the same, the color is reversed and the top is transparent on the Gateron
