Edit: for clarity, I didn't specifically mean an x1 slot, rather any additional pcie slot on the motherboard.

I was discussing new builds with someone when this topic came up. It made me curious as to what (if anything) people are using it for.

Wlan card. Some cheapie from ebay with an old Intel chip, works fine.

I voted for Nothing!

No need for a soundcard as I use my GPU, and if I needed one in a pinch, my onboard one is supposed to be pretty good.

No need to capture because no one would be interested in watching me play FM :D

Sign of the times that the question is whats in your slot, like we all only have a single 1x slot. :)

The 1x slot I am using is used by my sound card.

Do we use more than one card if even that? :)

I feel what OP is meaning here hehe.

You are correct. Most new boards seem to have only 2 slots, but the 2nd isn't necessarily a 1x slot. I should have worded it 2nd slot, regardless of size.

I'm currently using a wlan card, but am planning on nothing for my next build.

I could've worded it better but glad you catch my meaning

Dont to be fair, 1x slots are of course less useful than 4x slots.

I did for a while seriously consider buying a Intel network card to put in one as I noticed the onboard Realtek is junk for its CPU cycle usage compared to the Intel chip on my old board. Cant rule it out, but probably less likely now as I think I dont care enough to buy one and put it in.

If I had a board with 4 or less SATA ports, I probably would be populating a 1x slot with a SATA card.

I voted for sound card because on-board audio still has no OP-Amp to drive headphones. And i hate Realtek drivers.
Even the Dell monitor (G3223D) has a better DAC and OP-Amp than the on-board RTL89x.

My main rig doesn't have any PCIe x1 slots (it's mITX and has pretty much everything I'd want out of it integrated into it anyway), but for other machines in the household the answer is either "nothing" or "WiFI card".

I think this poll will give a wrong result. I do not want to limit my options.

I voted "nothing" ... as of now.

My PCIEx1 Slot is shared with the SATA Connector. I did use for a while 6x SATA with my X670 mainboard.

The external USB Sound Card works fine. the onboard sound card from my x670 mainboard generates distortion. most likely because i use active speakers.

Dual Analog/Digital TV tuner card. Works with winTV7 software, like the only one that works with Windows 10.

I'm still using soundcards so one of the PCIe x1 is occupied. I wanted to buy ATX board but the extra PCIe slot is just not being used, multi-GPU is dead, soundcard too.

Soundcard, the Creative Sound Blaster ZXR from 2012 to be precise.

Very much needed for my AKG K601 headphones.

Tried the onboard of my 2021 motherboard and it's flat, shallow and soulless sounding. The ZXR is still unmatched when it comes to onboard, and we're 12 years further now. Either people use shitty headphones or we have no quality standards anymore.

Probably some dust. Been lazy and haven't sprayed out my rig in almost a year. :shadedshu:

SATA controller.

Voted network card, but I got 2 things going on the PCIE slots: a WiFi card on a x1 slot + a M.2 SSD riser on the secondary x16 slot.

Another ssd. I put my Netac in there. I know it doesn't make much sense since its one of my fastest drives but for whatever reason, it performs much better in that slot than the p5 plus. Whereas the they both perform well in a 4x4 slot, the Netac is still faster but the p5 plus is close whereas thats not the case in 3x1. The p5 seems to lose more from the loss of lanes and generation for whatever reason. For example, my mx500 x 2 raid 0 drive is faster than the p5 plus in 3x1 whereas the Netac is faster than the sata raid drive. Not in sequential, but in actual file transfers and pretty much everything else.

I kinda want to get another one and then make another raid setup where its two 3x1 drives. But no I shouldn't I have too many ssds already!!!!!!

Gigabit Ethernet card. Because lightning killed the onboard port.

Other: M.2 ssd to PCIe card and WiFi card, in separate slots .

Same. Don’t need a network card and the sound is handles by an external DAC.

The slot with nowt teken out as there's nowt in it.

Voted nothing but in truth Dust.

I voted nothing because my MB does not even have a x1.

I also voted nothing. My GPU s in my X8 Slot. If i have a x1 slot is a question i cannot answer. Who knows...

How do you still have analogue signals?

I guess it was just NA that killed analogue TV?
