Free Games Thread

I've made a list of nearly all currently available Amazon Prime freebies so no one misses anything. Also makes it easier to search this thread at a later date to check if a game was free at some point. I left out a few games that didn't look like quality titles but there's a great mix of indie and AAA games here.

Quick note, Quake2RTX is free.

Quake2 OG is still paid.

Good catch
Prime members can get the OG title for free and everyone else can get the RTX version free lol

Still waiting on Quake 3 lol..

Still not near as good as Quake 2. :p
Quake 3 was one of the first if not the first online game that I played, did not know 2 was better o_O

For online play, 3 is probably the better choice.

Quick note, Quake2RTX is free.
Only for RTX owners, right?
I will be shocked if Nvidia is giving anything to owners of competing hardware.

It's free for everyone.

Edit: I've just tried it, it works on my full AMD Linux machine, although performance is measured in seconds per frame on the highest settings.

No. Quake2RTX will run on Radeon & Arc cards as well. The RayTracing performance will be lower.
Looking at the reply from @AusWolf just above yours, I guess it's as much "free" as the software version of PhysX 15 years ago. But this is not the place to start posting what I am posting in other threads.

Thanks both of you for your replies.

It's basically a tech demo, I would expect it to be free anyway. :)

It's just a shame we'll have to wait at least 10 more years before we can run it above 30 FPS.
Can you run today a 15 years old game that uses hardware PhysX without an Nvidia card at framerates that will never drop under 30fps?
It's not a tech demo, it's a marketing tool.

Look at it the way you want to. To me, it's a techdemo because nothing prevents you from playing the original Quake 2 instead, and having the same amount of fun.

So every remake is just a tech demo then?
Not necessarily, but they are kind of pointless if you think about it (unless there are technical limitations of running the original on a modern OS or display).

My desktop has an RX5700XT, so no RT, but my laptop has a Ryzen 7 7435HS/ RX7700S which runs RT pretty well considering how demanding RT is. I get around 40fps according to Steam, but 78fps according to the Radeon fps counter

You might have AFMF2 turned on (driverside frame generation) which doubles your fps but doesn't show up on anything other than Radeon OSD.

Thanks for pointing that out because I had no idea. I don't game very often on the laptop but it's good to know what it can do.
And, without wishing to go off-topic, my RX 5700 XT is probably due for an upgrade, but that's another matter.
