Damn, I feel old when it comes to gaming! But it's good to be old. Youngsters don't know what Half-Life is, or how we felt when we copied Doom from our only single school computer onto several floppy disks and it worked when we took it home! They also don't know what software rendering is and why you had to use it with an S3 graphics card. They just keep bragging about having DLSS and shit. Bah! :rolleyes:

I still remember getting games home, loading them up over several floppy discs only to receive an error on launch. Call the help line number provided in the box and then receive your patch in the mail 2-4 weeks later.

Indycar was 8 floppies. Loved Leisure suit larry though. Sneak play it in the middle of the night with my cousins while everyone slept.

In all fairness, Upscaling most definitely gives a benefit to performance and if the image quality is not annoying to someone, I say most eagerly to have at it. Like those above have rightly said, it's all subjective and very personal.

For those who read this, you do what you like and what looks good to your eye and what you can have fun with! It's all good! :toast:

What do you mean our ancestors? The late '90s - early '00s was my best era of video gaming! I got my first PC and first video game in '97. Good old times! :rolleyes:
On the scale of gaming, '90s are far away now. I was born in '97s, been playing on the family computer and end up building my first pc in 2015.

Edit : After some reflexion, '90s is kind of in the middle of video game history, nor old or recent. I wish I was born a bit sooner, I'm kinda "old" in my way of thinking and living in general.

Far away is just a matter of perspective. I had my first PC and first game in '97. It still feels like it was yesterday. Life is but a fleeting moment, a blink of an eye, nothing more.

Anyway, let's get back on topic before I get all existential and whatnot. :)
 
if the game cant be run at native on high end hardware its badly optimized. doesnt deserve to be played.

That's very myopic. I can make a game with terrible terrible graphics that can be played maxed out at native. Does that mean it's well optimized? No, it just looks terrible. The opposite can also be true, a game with insane graphics but can't be run at native maxed out. Does that mean it's badly optimized? Nope, it just means there is no hardware yet available that can max it out.
 
Well, considering I am resistant to TAA as it often results in a blurry resolve, I naturally would rather play without upscaling at all. Native resolution upscalers are just TAA with an added performance cost, so I don't like those either (yes, I have tried DLAA, it was still fancy TAA, though realistically all upscalers are fancy TAA). Though even in the worst of times I rather stick to TAA rather than an upscaling, as even if the TAA looks horribly bad, upscaling has a special way of disappointing me.
 
Im pretty confident in a blind test must people would pick DLSS Q looking better than native TAA. It's not even a fair comparison since DLSS Q is also a lot faster but still. Easy example, look at all that shimmering at native, I have no idea how people choose to play like that. Of course if you don't have access to DLSS sure, that's a different story.

You're either deliberately side-stepping the point they were making or you missed it entirely. Either way, that's on you. Just a little bit pedantic.

yeah but we used to actually employ skilled game devs at one point who knew what optimization was. now its a race to the bottom in terms of who can hire the cheapest devs and fill in the gaps with AI if ubisofts latest leaks are anything to go by.

AAA gaming is pretty much dead. If you want something meaningful and unique (and something that runs well on your PC), I'd suggest turning your attention to less known indie titles. You can find some true gems if you know where to look.
 
DLAA, or FSR at 100% scaling - but only if the native AA/TAA is garbage, or if it's a game where frame-gen is appropriate (mandating DLAA or FSR).

Temporal blur that's done poorly is, IMO, far worse than no AA at all - and I know that no AA at all looks pretty damn horrible. There are plenty of long-form videos on Youtube from popular and obscure sources, whitepapers, reddit threads, yada yada - Temporal AA is ruining games unless it's tuned very carefully to minimise inter-frame blur - and in an overwhelming majority of titles, it's tuned poorly or not at all.
I noticed this in Horizon Forbidden West the other day. TAA, XeSS, and FSR all had blurring and issues (native resolution). The non-temporal solution (in bed and can't recall now what kind it was) didn't have this issues, but unfortunately it had different issues.
 
DLSS Quality for me if native doesn't give me the FPS I want. I play at 4k, so the quality difference between DLSS Quality and native is usually pretty minimal to me, and I like having all of the eye-candy on.

I can see DLSS being worse at 1080p or 1440p vs native as it is upscaling from a much lower render resolution at those display resolutions, but it's great at 4k.

Ubisoft is just run by complete monkeys. Their whole company has been a hot mess for years now.

It kind of reminds one of (driver-based) FXAA of old times, doesn't it? I remember seeing FXAA in Skyrim first. I thought my GPU was dying, I nearly threw it away. :laugh:

Yes, especially when run below 1080p. Looked like complete trash.
 
Ironically, FXAA is one of the less blurry options now compared to modern AI-based temporal upscalers or TAA.

Sure, it still makes textures soft, and it has pretty severe instability on subpixel detail, but at least it's not smearing multiple frames of textures together into a muddy soup littered with temporal edge artifacts.

Exactly! I don't get the hype behind upscaling, honestly. Sure, it's great on a weaker GPU in a new game, or when you're attempting 4K, but it's useless for anything in between.

And even then, if you use upscaling for 4K it's not really 4K anymore, unless you compare it against TAA, in which case it could look better, or you can turn TAA off, which is borderline redundant at 4K (unless effects are dithered or under-sampled, in which case I am sad).

99% of games you can't turn TAA off. TAA is basically a worse version of dlss (works similar, it basically samples frames just like dlss) since it's defacto blurrirer due to the way it works. Even if you could somehow turn it off and actually play native, youd still need some form of AA cause even 4k in a small screen looks jagged.

That's why dlss is used by most people for the increased IQ, cause 4k "native" is horrendously blurry, and any other proper method of AA is computationally expensive.
