HP laptop upgrade ZBook G2 k4100 to Nvidia GTX 1070m and EliteBook 8770 (a few laptops)

Not starting at all doesn't sound good. Hope the instruction is clear as to what to do.

8770w staring but screen not coming on, then switch off after 5 second. After 2 attempts radiator go warm.

Wouldn't have thought there would be a big power draw at startup except for a very short inrush but I've never measured it. Maybe someone with a WireView or similar would comment?

Possible for that reason... i like to try play with bios as You suggest couple month ago.
Does "nvflash --save rom.ifr" save an inforom for you? Extension .ifr is important, name can usually be whatever. If you can would you mind attaching it?
I follow this and I have bios file I hope is possible to reduce power consumption of that card. To like under 100W = 95W or 90?.
And need some suggestion how to use put back to card modified file. I hope :D:D find some time to help my. I would be very grateful.

pawelnrg you need to modify the HP 8770w laptops INF file to add these 1050, 1060, 1070, 1080 GTX cards since they aren't originally supported by the laptops settings. This has been done successfully many times by others for the 8770w. It has nothing to do with the cards power consumption.

Is 2 version of card with different clock speed and power consumption. tested in 2 laptop not graphic start at all

Summary of successes and failures so far:

Zbook G2 works with the 1070 (win10) as shown in the image. The heatsink needs to be modified and the cross on the card with the screw threads needs to be replaced with a similar one from a laptop (less protruding as it may not press sufficiently). Easy way cross-thread needs to be replaced from the old card, they are similar but not the same. The drivers need to be edited.

8770w works with GTX980 (win10) as shown in the picture (even windows unedited drivers installed some old ones - nice bonus). to have the current ones you have to edit.

8770w version with dream colour works with GTX 1070 as written by colleague @TheAlchemist all possible https://www.reddit.com/r/elitebook/s/7Q4wsiSdGq i.e. maybe a reasonable if you have a broken display. You can convert to dream colour right away. (some work has been done, but it has not been successful yet).

8770w gtx980 (same laptop as is in photo running windows 10) windows 7 and edited drivers not working. After installing the drivers the system tries to fix itself. I edited for elitebook 8770w quadro 5100 . I edited for the Zbook it works. And here is the shit :( I don't understand something they changed?

I bougt a K2000m because I wanted to replace the K600m in my Zbook G2. It shows black screen. I tried to put the K2000m into my old 8570W but does not boot either.
Then I tried to swap between Zbook G2 (K600m) and 8570W (K1000m) but non of them boot.
The K series should work with these computers, why does not work?
The microsoft AI told, that "BIOS Incompatibility – Some HP ZBook models have locked BIOS settings that prevent unsupported GPU upgrades."
How can I change the bios of the ZBOOK to accept my GPU?

Correction on my last post. It was M2000m what I bought to replace the K600m.

Update: In bios the "Hybrid graphics" option has to be enabled. I always disabled it because of the missing intel HD Driver for Win10 (on Win7 it is fine).
This YT video some extra info:

I am getting driver error code 43 with the M2000m card.

There is something wrong with the quadro drivers on the latest Windows 10 versions. (now in 2025 I am still using the 21H1 version of win 10). If I use Kepler k6xxm quadro card in the laptop, windows 10 automatically downloads a very old driver from 2018, I belive it is numbered with 3xx.xx. The latest driver which supports the kepler is version 417 (from 2020), and I can see in the .inf file that my card is there, but the installer says wrong OS. I also tried to install manually, but device manager says, that the driver is not compatible or something.
So I have a theory that if I would use a very early version of Windows 10, like 1607 or 1709, probably I would able to install the driver.
My other theory is maybe the hybrid graphics with the intel HD graphics. This technology on the win10 was always crippled because of the missing good HD driver from Intel (the cpu is 4th gen core2 which was meant for Win7, and Intel never gave resources to develop good driver for Win10). Probably users had a lot of problems, thats why windows update downlads the old and stable driver, and stops you to update yourself - by not let you to install the nvidia driver.
After a multiple hour of struggling I gave up the experimentetion, and decide to put back the k6xxm card into the laptop and forget the upgrade with the M2000m.

And done. :D
Everything works! Burning test enabled ( Furmark ), card temperature OK. Full success.

EDIT:
And shit. after a few minutes it brings up a screen like this.

EDIT:
Well yes... TPD... Laptop is designed for max 100W cards. (top one https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/quadro-k5100m.c2425 ) and this one takes more than 110W.

With lower frequencies should be less current-consuming. The "afterburner" will help!

continued....
Hello, sorry to bother you but I would like to ask you how you managed to avoid problems with the BIOS when installing the new GPU. I recently bought a GTX 1050 and I haven't been able to make it work. I tried editing the .inf manually and with nvcleaninstall, but everything I do gives me error 43 and I can't get past that.

Did you manage to make it work or did you give up?
