IDK why but dark mode just hurts my eyes, maybe it's the VA panel, I don't rightly know honestly.

I think the only thing for me that notice is the white text could be a hint less bright, but not a lot. If lowered too much it can make it hard to read against the background if too white you get a bit of a "flash bang" or "snow blind" effect on the actual white text itself. I like it a lot overall right now, but the white text occupies more screen real estate than like the white folder and link text on my Mozilla browsers style and I think would be improved if it were tamed a hint more.

I think with the blue link text and highlights text you have almost the opposite issue where the darker link text might need to be a smidgen lower or alternately kind of invert like the foreground/background colors when highlighting over the text so that it's obvious you're highlighting over it.

I've seen some mention of browser extensions/apps for theme customisation...

Do any of them offer a quickly accessible black and white (monochrome) effect, including images and other content, not just the UI? Is that even possible?

Example:

Boring but this is the type of distraction free dark setting which works best for my lazy eyes.

Or, @W1zzard, is something like this possible at your end. I'm guessing the "effect" is less likely but how about a theme-based monochrome mode where most of the UI and content turns grayscale, except for stuff thats usually outside of the themes control (like embedded media/logo/etc)?

No matter how much I've tried, I could never get used to dark mode when browsing/surfing/reading web content.

I'm using it personally I'll still take it as is over the more extreme snow blindness of default style. I can actually get around that issue readily enough with my dimmer software, but if I were to run it 24/7 I'd wanted to develop it further and polish up some details of it though it's highly functional for purpose. I just haven't made time to further iron out more on going development stuff I'd like to do with it because it's multi-dysfunctional beyond just dimming.

Looks great thanks W1z, definitely my preference when browsing mobile, desktop I'm not sure yet but I love the choice.

IPS not that would change much except better blacks and enhanced energy savings which I have a surprising amount of detailed control over parts of that with my software when I actually use it. It's not on by default so I use it like 1% of the time at most. I have more pressing stuff to spend time on right now. It's more of a side project I've picked at.

Yesterday when I logged in, the forum background had reverted to a light color. When I looked in my Chrome settings the mode had changed to Device. It's all good now that I manually set it back to Dark, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen or maybe knows what might have caused it? This happened while I was on my desktop vs the laptop I surf on in the morning. The only thing slightly different I can think of is I hadn't used my Logitech MX Vertical for net surfing on the desktop for a while and started using it again on that PC yesterday.

I did some net searching on this and found many people saying they also had Chrome's appearance automatically changing on them, but they always said it was the Theme changing, not the Mode. My Theme does not have this problem, maybe because I'm using Morpheon Dark, which I DLed from the Chrome Web Store. I also searched for a description of Device Mode, and it says "Chrome will follow your device's theme".

Luckily there is a force dark option, I try to avoid auto detect for the reasons you stated.

I’m all for dark mode but my eyes do best when the colours are toned down a bit, just enough to take the edge off the glow. Actually I find blacks, whites and greys, a softly applied monotone palette, works best for these aging eyes (perhaps also other less intrusive colours). If not, I find it distracting and prolonged use results with fatigue, etc. I had the same issue with PCPartPicker - those bright product images and glowing fonts/objects on a black background just didn’t sit right. I gave PCPPs dark mode a few tries but in the end, I could never get comfortable with anything other than the default theme.

Saying that, its a whole different experience when I’m in a dark room, like when I’m about to sleep with a phone/tablet/laptop in hand. Dark mode in this setting with reduced brightness makes a nice and much needed difference. When dark-mode isn't available in that setting, I usually lower the screen brightness more aggressively to around 10-20%.

The short version, agreeing with @Onasi - No two eyes share the same lens.

Yes, be it light or dark mode, I think it's important to take the edge oFf the contrast and have a nice selection of greys.

What you describe about being in a dark room is how I feel all the time, and have all my screens at min brightness Apart from my laptop actually. At min brightness it's about 1 candela, tops

Incidentally I have no complaints about the default light mode on TechPowerUp, it's a nice light grey, much easier on the eyes than most light modes.

Totally agree, the default viewing experience is fantastic. My only minor gripe is the overly bright orange poster ID which appears in quoted replies. On occasion, harder to read but I think its more of an individual quirk.

Not if your using a Chromium based browser there's no need of a separate extension when all you need to do is use the "browser name here"://flags url and find dark mode in the advanced settings and set it to use selective colour inversion of non image elements you get perfect dark mode on every website

I use FireFox and the DarkReader extension. What you just described is more involved than I care to try.

And yet here you are on a tech sites forum I get your using FF I didn't say that what I suggested was for FF but for Chromium based browsers it would take less time than going to the extensions page and searching for dark reader installing it and then configuring it how you want it

Personally I like it. Having double cataract surgery the dark mode is easy on my eyes The all white just drives me crazy on this monitor. I hope it stays at least as an option I haven't noticed any weirdness yet but if i do I'll repost here

I disagree. What you suggested is far more complicated and involved than finding, installing and using an extension.

Yes it does, and I have complained in the past there is little difference there too, but in Dark Mode it is impossible to see the difference.
I have reverted to default light background dark text, despite liking dark mode elsewhere.
