The TPU UK Clubhouse

The older you get. The less of a shit you give about things, what other people do and their business unless youre directly affected by it.
Maybe not 'less of a shit' but more so just general mellowing out. My mom has quite the history, let me tell you, but as soon as her 30's hit, she was a mellow as the soft drink. Still definitely has her vindicate and rebellious nature though from her youth though. Cant trust my mom to drive at all because of how much of a rebel she is.. she isnt a idiot, doesnt endanger people, but she will absolutely do stupid stuff when she knows she can.

I think most people in their 20's think they got to have a vendetta against the world, especially among millennials, but in my experience I just feel like the entire world is against me lol.

Why do I keep hearing Ibiza pronounced as ai-bee-fa? There's no damn F in the word. It's so annoying! :banghead:

Not to mention, it's only English that pronounces i as ai, and Ibiza is not an English word, so I assume the correct pronunciation is closer to ee-bee-za. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Edit: It's equally annoying to hear Rammstein pronounced as ram-stai-n. It's rahm-shtai-n.
I-beat-sah. Spanish.

Z in Spanish makes an English S sound, but in that particular syllable structure is (iirc) slightly more staccato.

I might be wrong, and it is I-Bee-Sah. Spanish class was a long time ago.

My mom has quite the history

My mom is quite the opposite. She's gotta be up in everyones business and doesnt understand why others have an opinion that differs to hers when her's is the best. When you try to reason with her or talk about it she doesnt want to hear it. But the moment her opinions get debunked/not to be correct or hold water. She gets very very upset and depressed.

Dad tells her to not think of things so negatively - He gets absolutely mauled. Mum wont talk to him for a week. I tell her the same thing and she gets upset but I get away with it but her attitude/approach to life doesnt change.

My sister tells her to STFU. Instantly shuts mum down when she starts getting hysterical. Which is rude and upsets mum and I dont condone that behaviour towards mum but the thing is mum will never learn or listen to what we say. So regardless of my sisters behaviour. I cant really say anything. Mum is just stuck in time.

I don't want to stereotype but my Mum is kind of similar...maybe its a fairly common trait amongst:
Woman? Check, East asian? Check, Do they always think they know better? Check

Ibiza, pronounced using "English sounds" appropriately would be Ee-bee-thah, the Z in Spain's Spanish does the "th" sound as in thanks.

Yea, some people just think they know whats best or whats right and cant fold on that opinion / belief till its literally breaking apart in their face. Your dad is right; she shouldnt take it so negatively, because its a really bad way to live life imo.. I used to be this way when I was a kid, and it was awful to be around me. As I got older I mellowed out and now I'm still pretty true to what I think is right; but not to the point where I'm almost hysterically lying to myself to try and keep up my opinion. I dont know.

Never heard of anyone like this whos got it this bad though. New to me, anyway. Hope your family is doing alright. ;)

Spanish = ee-bee-tha

English = eye-bee-tha

eye-beetz-sah = wrong (says the Spanish girl).

Today were learning spanish in UK clubhouse thread. Reminds me, I should learn spanish. We do have a fair bit of spanish speaking folk here where I live anyway in the states.

Reminds me of when I learned a few spanish phrases back during high school and would greet people in spanish sometimes and it would confuse them. It was funny.

To be fair, the Spanish I learned was with Latin American pronunciation. I forgot Spain has a different pronunciation.

Probably just East Asian. However.... My Aunties (Her sisters) are super chill and they constantly give her shit about her disposition on life and other stuff aswell. Thats why mum hates seeing them in general. Any sort of conversation ends up being an argument even if the topic isnt about family related stuff.

Its sad but what can you do? Im not going to do a (my) sister and tell her to STFU when mums volume starts ramping up. My sister can do it and can get away with it. But when it comes to me - The person who has caused her the most headache, anguish and heartache whilst growing up. It would break her heart and I dont want to be that guy.

As I was saying to Dad when we were overseas. had it been 20-30 years ago we could have been ever so slightly meaner towards her to correct her behavioural issues. I would have tolerated my sister telling her to STFU more often if the end result was mum having a more positive outlook and disposition on life. (Maybe I am wrong??)

Dealing with family is always a difficult line to walk. Too mean and you upset them/break their heart but too soft and they themselves dont end up in the greatest of places.

I think these days, the world is against everyone. Divide and conquer is the name of the game. We need to feel alienated and alone for the idiots to maintain power (I don't just mean politicians - I mean in all aspects of life, work, etc.) That's the only way they can.

That was useful, thanks. :)

Getting my internet upgraded tomorrow. 150mb FTTP. Plusnet wouldnt let us pick up an 80mb FTTC package we had been using with them previously.

No upgrade. Engineer came out and couldnt poke the cable through the ground and route it through

When I moved houses, my new property is covered by YouFibre, if you have the chance, go for that one, 2Gb/s for £49.99 monthly.

Predominantly this area has always been BT, Virgin Broadband or Sky. Other providers have always been super slow to move in. We were also looking at communityfibre or hyperoptic. Ive come across both their cabinets on the next street down from me but they won't service the road I live on and we've kept an eye on them for the entire year.

BT is the main one for my area, the only thing that annoy me about BT is I still can't access my bills properly on my email account.
Phoned them twice to try and sort it, no luck at all.
I've added the account multiple times and it says it might take 10mins to update but nothing.

How do you access your bills then? Im guessing they usually send it through to you via email so you dont have to log in? Really strange that.

I get a email notification of them taking money and then I see money coming out of my account lol.
I will be trying again next year when its time to tell them to give me their new customer rate discount for my current package.

It boggles my mind how many things engineers can't do these days. I ordered a gas smart meter upgrade like 3 times now. The first engineer said the pipes had to be routed a special way, which he can't do, so I had to book again. The second one didn't bother coming. The third one said the routing requires special parts that they don't have, and basically my property managing agent / landlord has to rebuild the gas inlets. How fucking incompetent have engineers become so they can't even fit a damn pipe anymore? :banghead:

Hmmm here that would not be an engineer, it would be a tradesperson - gas fitter, and if it's a meter possibly a level 2. If you don't have the certification you're not breaking any pipes.

Hmmm You call a labourer/installer an engineer?!?!

Are you saying you don't have to be an engineer to be a tradesperson responsible for installing stuff? That's really weird! So what kind of qualifications do these "tradespeople" have, if they can't even fit a damn pipe?

Engineering is a specialist vocation, usually studied at degree level at university or college. No idea how many fields there are, but people who design PCBs probably are systems and communication electronic engineers. Pipefitters aren't engineers. They'll learn their trade, making them capable of doing a specific role. Of course, experience will make people more adept.

We use engineer fluently in language, but for these jobs, 'fitter' is more appropriate. None of this in any way detracts from their job, which a qualified engineer couldn't do, unless they were also trained.

That's an accurate way of putting it. I still don't get why a fitter wouldn't be able to fit a gas meter with a curved pipe. It seems to me like the spectrum of work these people can do is extremely narrow. A lot narrower than it should be.

I'm sure there are some fitters who could do it, but they may be under time constraints, or they're being lazy. I had a sky optic fibre run from an old telegraph pole to the house. To fit it, they needed to get onto my 'utility' roof (7 foot high). I had a ladder but they said due to H&S they'd not be able to use it (true - they'd not be covered for accidents using a ladder that's not been inspected). Two minutes later, they were on the roof using my ladder. Short cuts can and will be taken, sometimes to get a job done. Other times, workers will do whatever they want (possibly following rules to the letter).
