If you have the space for it. I dont see why not. I used a PCI-E NvMe expansion card for a while with my Z-370 build. You'll still be limited by Gen 3 PCI-E speeds with X79 though but still an upgrade over Sata III

If you are thinking about using it as a boot drive though. I recall some X79 systems not actually liking it and you'll need to jump through some hoops to maybe get the system to boot off it.

thank you i give it a shot.

Hey guys been awhile, seeking insight/opinion. I have a liquid devil 7900 xtx I wanted to game with but with crazy gpu market wondering if selling it is a good idea and if so for how much?

I literally can’t find one selling anywhere in months and air cooled versions fairly rare now selling from 900-1500 depending on condition etc.

Wait until tomorrow when 9070 lands.
Here in Croatia, used XTX's start from 600 euros. It should be faster in raster and slower in raytracing than 9070XT which should start at 600 US dollars (but that price could be on paper only) ...

You probably mean 7900XT because there is no way 7900XTX is that "cheap"....I mean maybe only if have missed rops or something :)....

:-)
Granted, one 600 listing was on closed enthusiast forum, but the other was on "civilian" market. I even saw 6800xt's closing on 300 euros...

Holy crap…the GPU market hasn’t been this fucked up since 7900 xtx were almost 2 grand during pandemic!

So now we got largely unattainable GPUs from BOTH camps. With moderately, errrr 8 miles high inflated prices and only Nvidia in the truly high range. So now does anyone have any advice or ideas on what to do with my 7900 xtx?

Keep it atm that looks like the best options I mean if you want to stay with AMD.....no reason to switch to the 9070XT as 7900XTX is still a bit better in raster it's maybe a bit worst for RT and if you really need something better basically your only choice is 4090,5080 or 5090 and those cards cost too much but if you really need it or you don't care for money well then go for it....

That’s what I thought…5070 xt is nice but basically a lateral move and everything Nvidia is way too expensive if you can even get it!

It's not even a lateral move honestly because don't forget 9070XT still have "only" 16Gb and yours 7900XTX have 24Gb and as I said it's still faster in raster so basically you ain't getting anything except maybe a bit better Ray Tracing and a bit better power consumption with 9070XT and yeah FSR 4 but hey that maybe will also come later for 7000 series and maybe even for the rest of AMD cards

my 9070xt is arriving today replacing my 3080 ftw3 lol putting my 3080 to my x79 system.

anyhoo is it me or windows 11 feels snappier on x79? I upgraded my OS from 10 to 11 and feels new-ish pc lol

Thanks for results! I already have the 7900 xtx, I actually have the Powercolor liquid devil so need a few fittings to get it setup I haven’t touched my rig in many many months. Among last things I did was buy the 7900 xtx lol.

Yup, just as I thought, max x79 can handle is 6800XT: your score is just above it ...

If that’s the case my 7900xtx will not be fully utilized…

Depends on resolution and settings but you can always increase details to put additional load.
Crucially (for me), minimums are very noticeable ...

Just for comparison reasons ... I run a 7900xtx with a Ryzen9 5900x (which is also an "old" CPU meanwhile) ... and that is my score. I think it will be even better with a faster CPU with 3D cache. So ... like ZOX mentioned, really no reason to pair it with x79. But interesting to see the results anyway :)

Anyone able to get Doom Dark Ages running on their X79 system? I don't buy/play lots of new games every year, but I can play Helldivers 2 just fine with my 4930k, with an RTX 3070. Doom Dark Ages is the first game where it seems like maybe my old CPU/mobo is finally just 'too old'. On the other hand, it looks like a lot of people are having crash issues with it, and there are a lot of variables at play, so MAYBE it's not the CPU? it could be any number of things, I suppose.

However, I did notice that they state NVMe as a minimum requirement, and my SSDs are all SATA. However again, I've seen people claiming to run it just fine on SATA SSDs. I think it's cool that my computer (besides the 3070) is really old, and can still do everything I want to do with it, just fine, including any games I threw at it, up until now. I'd like to be able to squeeze another couple of years out of this thing, honestly. I'm not sure I'll be interested in too many more triple A games like Doom, in the near future. So if I could just get this game working I'd be all set.

Anyone get it running on an x79?
