need 2tb + SATA SSD ASAP!!! needs to be reliable and not entry level crap

having a tough time. I wanted to go w the crucial mx500 2tb but nobody has any, samsungs are all failure prone and I have one of the 960 or 970s that are failing. getting free space descrepancies in linux and disk errors as well.

need this asap cuz it's my main workstation disk and my backups are all spread out and it HAS TO BE 2TB OR MORE CUZ MY /HOME DIR IS 640GB and I have to do an image of that cuz bitwig has install limits on how many systems it can be on.

I have a dell precision t3600 from 2012

all I see is crap wd blue, crap sandisk, and elcheapo brands that are only good for cheap laptops. and I can't boot pci-e on the prevision t3600 without dodgycodgy clover workarounds that aren't reliable and janky at best. so that ENTIRELY RULES OUT PCI-E anything. I"ve researched that for months.

What if you split the difference instead. Boot off the crap disks and use an NVMe + PCIe adaptor for data? This way you can get a large 4TB data drive, enough to consolidate your existing data, enough to redirect swap for better performance, enough for scratchpad space, and enough left over to store a backup image off the boot crap disk which won't have to be as big either. (I assume you have some imaging tool more recent than Norton Ghost)

Your backups should not be on your system drive. You shoudl have a proper solution to prevent this, like a NAS with enough storage to hold your data.

For a SSD, I dont know why you call the WD blue crap? They're no worse then MX500s were, i've had no issues with either. You dont want sandisk, or WD, or samsung, and crucial doesnt make the MX 500, well, that's every brand with direct NAND access. Everyone else is using NAND from one of the companies youve listed. So you may be up shat creek without a paddle.

Your best bet is to use a 256GB boot disk that is SATA, and move your main storage to a M.2 SSD. You can easily get a PCIe card that will host the drive once the OS has booted and use it as normal, then when you upgrade to something more modern you can move that drive into the new PC. Easy to find 4+TB drives, the WD SN850+ 8TB is quite affordable for what it is.

Your only other choice is third party sellers on newegg, a couple still claim to have MX500s.

Neither one of those things precludes you from having more then 1 SSD. Perhaps you can use some of the money from game dev and music production to get something newer? The T3600 is an ancient sandy bridge based desktop at this point, and used machines that are much newer that can boot off of NVMe are pretty affordable. Then you could have a 8TB boot drive no issue.

Ok well maybe the other way around then? Get a large crap disk (hopefully not QLC at least) and a large NVMe+Adaptor so you can make relatively fast and frequent backups of the crap disk for when it does finally crap out. All in all it sounds like you are due for a replacement system that can handle your storage needs but I take it that's not in the cards right now. I don't have another idea at the moment.

Does it allow you to unregister systems so you can reinstall and transfer licenses to other installations? It's pretty risky taking apart a system you need for work or making changes without a fall back and backups in a ready state.

When the global cough hit in 2019/2020 and I was forced to work from home it was a tough pill to swallow but I had to ensure I had a full secondary system on hand in case of failure and to add insult to injury the company didn't pay a dime for it either. That's pretty much when I got back into gaming because I also need to know those replacement parts were going to be reliable when I needed them so my replacement became my gaming PC, ready at any time to reformat or swap parts.

So your using Linux right? Isn't there ways to move and redirect your home folder to different disks? Is that an option you can consider without your software breaking to help you manage your options?

I can't quite recall but did your T3600 come with disk mirroring or HBA with disk mirroring? I helped my car shop get one of those many years ago (probably around 2012) and set them up with disk mirroring on a pair of SSD. They eventually had a controller failure on of the Adata SSD's but they were able to keep on ticking thank goodness with the other disk. Dell found out about it and sent him a replacement right away but that was back when it was still in warranty. In fact we didn't get a chance to replace it right away and Dell ended up sending us three replacement drives, LOL.

Anyway back on topic...if you get two crap SSD's mirroring might be an option you can consider. That's not a backup but at least some redundancy for a little piece of mind.

the disk is acting wierd and the os crashes randomly and I've reverted to standard kernel instead of realtime, changed nvidia drivers, etc.. and different system tools say different amounts of free space.

I did look at a backblase report and I might have found one but I will have to get 256 or 512GB cuz 2TB is way out of my price range.

Eventually I'll upgrade my precision t3600 to something newer but I need something to hold me over
