Do you even know that your used one works?

it worked 2 months ago when i rigged up the cooler to stay on the chip with a tie wrap and some rubberbands  but im unsure if it would be cost effective to sell you it or for you to just order a good mobo and oc yours it should do 3.2 just fine

I think if I install one of the 3.2s with a fan I will have all the speed i need(FOR NOW),there are some sweet ones on ebay with cooling units.

thats a good idea cause it means i can sell mine on ebay :D

I found a brand new 3.2 w/ heatsink and fan buy it now for 91$,hmmmmm....

All except my chip, that mobo has the wrong socket for it.If I did go with that kind of mobo and my existing chip am I going to be able to OC it up to what I would get out of a 3.2 chip in my current mobo?

I have to admit I haven't read all of this thread, but if ou are thinking of upgrading the motherbboard in a Dell box forget it. There are proprietary case connectors and holes that don't match the ATX standard.

Afro AMerican tech will save the day, trust me.

another issue with the dell cases, is that they have a different board and backplate layout...
In my dell Prescision 360, i was not able to put another motherboard in, as the backplate was in a different spot to the backplate on the new motherboard.
I also had the same issue with a dell dimension 5000 where the backplate was in the middle of the board!!

Basically you wont be able to put another motherboard in there im afriad... (perhaps you could cut the whole back of the case with metal cutters and just have no backplate though)

You going to need to do what I did and buy case, chip, ram, board, gfx (non agp... pci express) etc..

Its worth it though believe me :)

Thats my long term plan,a build from case up,so ill stick a 3.2 in this one along with the new PSU and VC,it will be far better than anything I have owned to date so I can "COPE" till i can afford a new build.

that sounds like a good plan for you

your mobo is agp so i would look for either a X1950PRO, 7800GS, 7950GT

thats a great psu by the way ;)

I built a rig with the silencer 610w... not much to look at but serious solid & stable power.
I wish I got the 1100W silencer instead of my enermax galaxy ;)

the 410 was the best they had for the optiplex gx 270 mobo,i was told its abgreat brand though,I think my stock one is like 210.

yeah thats a good one ;)
410 continous power output and 450w peak...
only pc power and cooling list their sustained ratings for psu's

pushes some nice stable current, 23A sustained on the 12v rail too so you can get away with some top agp graphics cards with it.
(most psu manufacturers ptu their max ratings for the 12v rail and not sustained too)

I upgraded my PSU to an OCZ gameXstream 600W psu for my Dell prescision 360.
Only to find that I had to cut the metal at the backplate of the case as it wouldnt fit properly.

Cutting the metal backplate is a scary job as all those iron filings can find their way into the components and case real issues :P

The psu you have selected will fit perfectly to the best of my knowldedge, so youll be homefree with that.

Sweet I was wondering how much modification it would take to mount it in the case. When I mount the new PSU is there any startup or software shit I have to do,or just plug and play?

just plug and play... maybe make a note of the wires youre pulling out with the old one... as youll have to make sure you plug all the same cables on the other psu into those slots.
Also, try to keep the wiring as neat as possible to allow for as much airflow in the case as you can.

A socket 478 3.2ghz cpu will run really hot... and the case isnt really designed for it, though it will be fine if you havent got a jumble of wires blocking it all up ;)

I will get a decent heatsink with fan for sure, until then Ill run it with the case open.

just use a temperature monitoring program like coretemp:
http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

This will tell you how hot you running.
if you have any issues, just post back with the temps etc and im sure someone here will be able to help you out.

Also, I can strongly reccommend getting Artic Silver 5 thermal paste to go along with your heatsink... it will lower the temps by up to 5c less than the normal paste that ships with the cooler

will do Thanx.
