Glad to here you got it. I'm going to order one of those this week hopefully. How does it compare to your old seagate?

well theres no noise whatsoever i can hear when running hdtach although i have my amd stock cooler which is damn loud anyway, atm its sitting in the bottom of my case cause alll my wires are hidden and i need to remove my old one to have enough room/wires no vibration, i cant really compare it to my old one based off hddtach, when i have my windows installation transferred over i can make a better call, but its 20MB/s faster

I am assuming the WD you bought is OEM. If Retail you can use WD utilities to setup your new drive and make this your new boot drive. It will transfer all the contents from your old drive and appropriately write to MBR on the new drive too.

Anyway, if possible just give us a quick note on how Ghost works, like steps etc. I was thinking of buying it.

well it seemed to go swimmingly, copied over 100gb in 20 mins, then started to boot into windows stragight away :toast:

then it just hung and said "preparing your desktop" for like 3 minutes and then i got a blank purple screen

it had infact finished loading but it was like just a blank screen with no icons/desktop/explorer etc. i did manage to start taskmgr (ctrl+alt+del) and manually started explorer which gave me some hope as the desktop and my wallpaper loaded up but it was still not right there was only like 30 process' running in task mgr and a lot of the functionality such as help and support/networking etc wasnt running and couldnt be started.

i did try to boot into safe mode but even then it was fubarred , tried debugging mode and last known good configuration all to no avail. im just going to reinstall on the WD6400AAKS and copy my files over.

now i dont know if this is due to norton ghost or not, it could also possibly be due to perfectdisk, which ive been using and defrags ur mbr and pagefile etc, maybe that had somthing to do with it, but i dont think ima bother again.

Ghost is the best thing for anything. Making images of backups, etc.

Too bad. You know if ur original OS disk is still intact and you have a floppy drive with cable lying around, Make a Windows ASR disk with Backup. That works wonderfully. It takes about 15 minutes to backup and about 20 minutes to restore everything in working order. You need the XP install CD tho.

UPDATE:

after an hour or 2 organising the drive after ghosting it(deleting old/temp files, tweaking vista, startup items, performance defrag etc etc ) i can whole heartily say i would reccomend this drive to anyone looking for a fast, modern, sata hdd, well upto the task of being a main os/storage drive. i cant believe the performance. also im now getting 102MB/s in HDTach as opposed to 101MB/s when it was empty lol :toast:
