Hi, im just wanting to know what would be better to use for over all performance in games

a Q6600 @ 2.4GHz overclocked to 3.5GHz or
a E6850 @ 3.0GHz overclocked to 3.5Ghz

Q6600 is my current set up, and runs at 40c idel and 50c underload

would i get lower temps with the E6850? without losing game performance?

If you already have a Q6600 I would just keep it any get a better cooler. Look at the Xigmatek S1283, its the best air cooler on the market.

Keep the quad! more multi threaded apps that favour the quads will come out soon :)

Temps are fine, i wouldnt worry. I use a freezer pro and get similar temps, not a single thing wrong yet.

Man, Keep that Quad!!! haha (i know im beating a dead horse)

Those temps are nothing short of phenomenal for a quad at that frequency. My Q6600 doesn't OC that well and needs lots of voltage - I have those same temps on water!.

If you want more performance get a better cooler like the xigmatek, and OC higher. It takes a e6850 @ 3.8 to match a Q @3.6 even in gaming (the Q has double the cache).

Even if he has a quad already? That really wouldn't be cost effective T.

a e8400 at 4.4 ghz is significantly faster than a Q6600 at 3.6ghz in games and once he sold is Q6600 on ebay the E8400 would cost next to nothing. However, a Q6600 is still no slouch.

LOL in gaming, trust me, I've ran an e8500 @ 4.5Ghz and gamed with it. I couldn't feel a difference over my e1200@3.3Ghz.

Still either way, e8400 e6850, a quad at the same clock would trump them both once more and more games come out that are multithreaded. But that's little bit further in the future. . . .

EDIT: BTW I still like your suggestion, the e8400 is a great cpu. I liked the e8500 when I had it but wasnt needed for my personal use.

Yes and to match a dual at 4.3 ghz there are very few quads that can reach those speeds. May be a eo Q9550 at 4.0ghz or a Q9450 at 3.8ghz but they cost more.

I have a E6850 but upgraded to a Q6600 before i started to OC my hardware, i then noticed that people were using Duel cores more, and OCing them alot more than i could with the Quad, but i think thats to do with my motherboard

Aren't all 8400, or at least 8500s e0 now?

There is still quite a bit of old stock out there. I bought a e8500 about 3 weeks ago, and it was a CO. Not that it matters really, it would bench at 4.62ghz.

Stick with the quad. I tested mine and there was only 5fps difference between 2.4ghz and 3.8ghz. That was in crysis I think in supreme commander there would be about 10-15 but thats because its a cpu intensive game. You won't see much of an improvement in performance except for benchmarks and unless you like to play aquamark stick with the quad.

I can't believe you are asking this question!!!
I mean, if the two CPUs were at different clocks (Quad running at a lower clock than the Dual), then there is some debate, but at the same clocks, and having twice the raw CPU power???? Man!

No point dropping a quad for a dual core that has weaker cores. Stick to it. :D

Question: Would their be any advantage to a e8xxx series vs a e6xxx? Basically 65nm vs 45nm difference?

Would this make any difference? Basically would a e8200 clocked at 3.5GHz hold up with the Q6600 at 3.5GHz? I would figure the e8200 would have more L2 cache, so would the performance be better?
