Even at 35fps, that's a 14% increase.

I prefer my e8600 over my old quad core. 4.5ghz at relatively low voltage is just too good.

Depends on your usage really. If it's purely gaming, then the dual core.
If you do 3D or video rendering and encoding, the quad.

I'm surprised you can't get more out of your current cpu, as my e6550 sits at 3.5 with just a slight voltage bump, and I've never seen how far she can go. Is the mb the limiting factor.

The P5K is not a great clocking board...

6550 @ 3.5 is actually a pretty good 6550...

Lots of 6750's liked to lock down around 3200/3400, a few that would pass that generally hit 3800-4000+.

keep your setup for now... if you use your system for gaming, then your CPU is plenty fast for now... upgrade to an i7 and OC that later on... no point in spending so much money on old tech when what you have is fast enough for now...

If your gonna get a Q9550 - make sure its a 'S-Spec' - its a new revision which uses less power so supposedly supposed to clock higher then the usual Q9550's. Coupled with the right mobo & cooling - getting 4Ghz is achievable. but you need a mobo that can run a FSB of 471 - so pick carefully.

Errrrrrrr but yeah - I recently bought a Q9550 but Im stuck at 3.81Ghz cuz my mobo has a FSB wall :cry:

remember pick your ram & mobo carefully, because of the Q9550's low multiplyer - you will either end up running underclocked ram or overclocked by a very minor percentage depending how you go - maybe an extra 15-30mhz on the ram clock.

^^Yup, but most Motherboards upward of the p35 series will do 500fsb. I have a G33 POS and it'll do 500 stabily

That's more likely a limitation with the chip, i used to have a E2180 not so long ago. Max fsb it could handle was around 340-350Mhz, sucked cos i knew if it wasn;t for that i could get it past 3.5Ghz, i had great temps and plenty of volts to play with.

I'm sure your ram can go higher than 500Mhz! also the G31 in;t too bad, it should be able to do at least 300Mhz, my G33 can do 510 and it's only one step ahead of the G31

[Edit[ After haveinbg a quick search the G31 can support 1333FSB (333) and 1600(o.c) so i'm pretty sure your motherboard isn;t the limiting factor. Also if you have DDR2 666 you should be able to run at least a 333fsb

true, but I think quads make it harder no?... my mobo does 520 FSB with the e8500, couldn't touch 460+ with the Q6600 - don't know if it was the chip or the mobo though :confused:

The chip> 65nm's don't like high FSB's nothing to do with it being a quad... i don;t think. See the above posts about my E2180 65nm.

nah my ram goes heck unstable when it goes past 1000mhz

Same here...dropped my old low clocking Q6600 for this E8600 I have now running @ 4500Mhz 24/7 @ 1.41v's under water. :toast:

Same price is the seller though....grab the Quad....or go with a lower E8400 and hope it can clock. lol

Yes it would. you need to lower the ram divider. If you set the FSB to 250 in bios and the Ram divider to 1:1 you ram will only be runnning at 500mhz.
1:2 should not be the lowest divider on your board.

I used to run my old E2180@335x10 - the ram would be 1000mhz.

I'm using an asus board and i have a 2000mhz (500 in bios) FSB to get a 1000mhz ram speed.

That's funny, my board is a true POS but if I link the FSB and RAM bus it'll always run the RAM at a fraction of the FSB to keep it from going above it's rated spec. I can also unlink it and set it to whatever I want by hand. I'd hate to lose basic options like those when I get my new board.
