New CPU - E8600 or Q9550

Hey guys,

I'm looking for a new CPU, what would be better a E8600 or Q9550?

They both cost about the same.

I will be overclocking & use my system mostly for gaming.

quad will clock to 3.6-4.0 pretty easily, gaming only needs dual core really. Hard choice I would go quad just for the hell of it and clock it about 3.6. ALLEN

Q9550, twice as much cache as the e8600. You know how Intel S775 cpu's LOVE L2 cache.

If you are gaming mostly, get an e8400, OC it to 4.0GHZ, and with the money you saved not buying a quad, get a 4890
The quad isnt going to help your gaming anywhere near as much as a good 3d card.

With your system, the quad will most likely be a better choise. You can't SLI with that PSU and mobo, so if you only want to upgrade one thing, then get the quad.

If its just mostly for gaming id say keep what your have!!

agreed, you have an nice rig as it is. If anything clock that CPU higher if possible and get a better video card and your gaming performance will improve.

Depends on what your use is, if you use a lot of stuff that takes advantage of the quad, then that's the ticket.

Considering you are running a standard P5K, they are not known for their clocking abilities especially on quads, so you very well maybe better off with the dual core.

you wont even notice the difference between your current cpu and the e8600, i would get a quad or go for a new psu and another gtx260

Um... A e6750 @ 3.4 vs an e8600 which will do an EASY 4+...

I highly doubt he wont see a difference with a GTX260...
More like adding another GTX260 wont make a difference, especially considering its not a SLI board.

well i went from a e6300 at 3ghz to a e8500 at 4ghz and it barley is noticeable. i didnt know his board wasnt sli... maybe a new mobo then

It would depend on the game, playing something like supcom or crysis you will see a pretty large % difference.

You might get the highest clock speeds with the dual-core, but quad will probably be useful in things that can utilize more than 2 cores. I'd consider more between the e8500 and the Q9550 since the e8500 might save a few bucks to put toward something else like video card.
