Microsoft Windows 7 Will Allow Downgrades too

Even though there's still some time left before the official release of Windows 7, Microsoft - the creator of this OS - confirmed today that just like some Windows Vista distributions could be downgraded to Windows XP with ease, the same will apply to Windows 7. General users of Windows 7 will be given the option of downgrading right over Vista to Windows XP, a Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed.
"This is not the first time that Microsoft has offered downgrade rights to a version other than its immediate predecessor," the spokesperson told Betanews, "and our Software Assurance customers can always downgrade to any previous version of Windows."
Microsoft hasn't detailed exactly how downgrade rights will work with Windows 7 - for now we know that Windows 7 will be downgradable to either Windows Vista or Windows XP - the rest of the details remain unclear.

I've been using windows 7 for about an hour so far.

And wow, finally an upgrade it feels like.

Its faster, its not annoying, and the start menu finally had a developer go "you PR guys are F****** morons, heres how it should be done..."

I don't think there will be much need to downgrade back to windows xp from windows 7.

Vista is a perfectly fine OS since SP1 was released (just like XP was when SP1 came out for it), and 7 will be just fine after it's first service pack gets released.

Why are we going to go through this crap every time a new OS gets released?

As much as I liked XP, it really is time for it to die. There is no reason to offer new machines with XP anymore.

Windows 7 shouldn't even need a Service Pack as it is really just an upgrade to Vista They should really call it Vista SP2 instead of Windows 7.

It would be SP2 but MS want to get away of the name "Vista" (why? ). Just hope the price will be low so it will help the transition to win7. I'm fine with Vista x64 and can't wait for the upgrade.

Though I got to say that Windows XP still is the only OS from them that, under the right circumstances, will not BSOD.

I just got Windows 7 installed on my laptop. YESSSS it works. Finally, aero and an OS that is working!

Vista gave me problems during idle use, ie music would pause/cut off, game sound would pause/ cut off, movies would stutter/pause/ sound cut off.

You get the picture? I still need to test movies with Windows 7, but the music is working great even during a graphics installation. And before you say it was my sound drivers, I am using the exact say sound driver for win XP/ vista/ windows 7.

I've seen tooo many 7's though for today: Please wait seven minutes... your pc will restart several times.... Windows 7 is configuring... LOL

I hope that Intel has better drivers for their IGPs (supporting WDM 1.1); my initial foray into Windows 7 on my laptop was BSOD city. You can use older drivers with some success anyway...

Sorry, I guess that was a bit off topic. Anyway, the reason for doing this is because people are indeed still buying XP, and this gives Microsoft a way of getting new keys for people since they had run out using the older method.

I'm using Win 7 build 7068 and it's fantastic. I just can't imagine using XP again, it looks so dated. I know there's gonna be loads of morons who want to stick to XP without even trying Windows 7 though.

i want to try windows 7, but i don't feel like backing up like 30gb music/movies lol. Plus my luck my wireless network adapter or some shit wouldn't work lol. can you use vista drivers for windows 7? cause that's all there is for my adapter is vista and XP.

Drivers in Windows 7 are just like magic, most vista drivers will work, a lot are already installed with the OS, and even some XP drivers will work. For example, I just installed 7068 on my Eee 1000H, every device already had drivers except the multitouch and ethernet.

I've had less problems running windows 7 today than my brother has had running vista

Microsoft needs to CONTINUE cleaning up the OS, not just leave it as it though, or else a lot of consumers are going to be screaming "RAPE!" from their wallets, because it doesnt look much different.

The 7 beta was terrible at networking and moved like a turtle while moving files. I'll most likely wait for 7 SP1 to actually buy it. I might try it but I might save myself the trouble.

I get far less BSODs in Vista or 7 than I ever have in XP. Vista SP1 x64 is far more stable than XP.

7 is the most stable (windows) operating system I've ever used. The only problem I've had is because the SB750 RAID drivers don't want to work, and will cause a BSOD during startup if I have RAID enabled in the BIOS.

Ever since going to Windows 7, I cringe at the thought of even using Vista. The only reason I have Vista sticking around is because my school work doesnt support it (online), and punkbuster doesnt like Win7 yet.

It's the 7th version of Windows by the same metric that Vista is "Windows 6" and XP is "Windows 5.1."

Though I think I read somewhere on the net that Intel said it had no real meaning.
