AMD Slashes Prices of Radeon HD 6800 and HD 6900 Series Products

I was just looking around one UK site i normally use and the cheapest 6870's have increased in price today

These announcements are usually a week or two before the price slashes actually occur.

You know what this means? That I should be getting myself another 5870 for a CrossFire rig! And then buy a Radeon 7970 (or 8970?) whenever Windows 8 is released.

thanks competition for price drops, but i think prices should drop more

maybe to counter the 560 ?

When are they going to release some software to make good on the promises of better and faster media editing and conversion?

the 6850 and 6870 are still overpriced for what they are

Well it kind of depends. I got two 6850s last month for $155 each shipped AR and with the incredible scaling I average 61 FPS in Crysis 1920x1200 4x AA and 16x AF (ZPOMAF) + hi res texture mods.

Beat that for $310...

Not to derail the thread but is this going towards what you're lookin' for?

AMD slashed prices over this? I don't get it, the 1 gb 6950 performs better at the same price. So it's not really a major threat to them at all, why would they cut down the rest of their lineup in response?

Price drops on the 6800 cards is bad news for nVidia as they already don't have anything that competes effectively with them. From the specs I have seen concerning the GTS550, it should perform somewhere between GTS450 and GTX460 SE, so that won't be their savior in this market. Will nVidia redesign GTX460 or simply bump up the clocks and rename it so they have a card that competes with the 6800 cards? They can't unlock the missing shader unit or that would make it a GTX560 so what are they going to do? A completely new card?

It's called squeezing your competitor out of the market. They are hitting GTX560 from above and below to try to grab as many potential customers away as they can, that's why price drops on 6870 and both 6950 cards. The 6970 doesn't get a price drop because GTX570/580 are still high so why drop the price on it when people will still pay more for it?
